A long awaited break to relax and unwind and that is exactly what we got. The staff were friendly, excellent and attentive and nothing was to much trouble. Our room was one of thier superior doubles, and we could not fault it on the whole, as it was warm, comfortable and quiet. It did lack the promised hair dryer though. The food during our stay was very good, if we have any grumble it is the lack of options and a number of items that were on the menu were not available. The hotel is very well presented throughout with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The managers we found out during our stay have only been there since January and in fairness to them are really working hard to make a go of it.
Highly recommend it and we will be going back.

Went there for lunch, but run by young staff, very friendly but lack direction and training. Has the potential, location and good food. Points against, lack of training and expectation, we waited for 50 mins for a sandwich, no order, we were served after others who arrived later, told it was because we'd ordered a filling that wasn't available? Should have been told that at order stage. All that aside, lovelly location, lots of atmosphere, not the staffs fault, need experienced training and direction. They were friendly but unprepared. Numerous complaints about undercooked food and delays while we waited.

My partner booked this KGB weekend break for my birthday surprise...what a surprise it was. The web-site looks pretty good showing the re-built George in Hatherleigh. Thats where the good news stops.
The room we had was fair, no bath but apart from that good enough for the price. The first night we decide to have our 'included' dinner in the restaurant area. The starter I had asked for from the 'KGB' menu was apparantly not available, I say that because later on in the evening the couple at the table next to us had the starter that I was told was off. Anyway, not the end of the world, our food was medioce, luke warm, served on cold plates, edible but not exactly inspiring. After our main course had been served we were not talked to again, ie no offer of would you like a desert or coffee etc, so off we went to bed.
The next morning we went for breakfast, the waitress took our order very quickly but wasnt listening too well. Other victims were hanging around the restaurant area waiting for their breakfasts, not looking particularly happy. Whilst waiting for 45 minutes for our breakfast to arrive we watched the comedy of errors unfold. No juice, no milk, cracked cups, no coffee, complaints about the delay, the same response echoed around the univiting, atmospherically devoid restaurant..."sorry guys", "sorry guys" thats all you could hear. Hooray our brakfast finally arrived...oh no, the bacon was cold, pink and flacid, the sausage was inedible, the beans congealed on the stone cold plate, swimming in grease, I nearly threw up. Oh well what else could possibly go wrong, well, let me tell all you propsective kgb ers what happened next. We had a pleasent day in Dartmoor and went to the winery at Eastcott, very good (cold though :)). That eveing I thought about a drink at the bar, however, the bar area had the local 'shaven headed thugs lurking around' chatting with the ever so young, completely untrained hotel staff. We decided to head to our room, have a drink there before going to the 'Tally -Ho' pub restauarant, absolutely excellent food and service there, just 200 yards up the road. Before going out we witnessed a coach load of some 40 'guys' entering the back of the hotel on a stag do. They were already tanked up and this stop in there eveing had clearly been pre-arranged with the hotel. Just as we planned to leave, so did they including, throwing beer cans, abusive language and exposing themselves in the car park, all the behaviour you expect on a stag do, but not what I expected at our weekend break.
My tail of woe is nearly over, mistakenly we thought that sunday morning breakfast might be better...wrooong, just as bad, cold, slimy food and off hand, surley service from the 'waitress' / receptionist type person. Well what's the morale of my story...DONT GO TO THE GEORGE !!! Run screaming, rip up your KGB voucher, hide in your home, better write off your hundred quid than throw good money after bad.
I will be contacting KGB to plead for a refund.

visited as part of the KGB deal, which made our stay excellent value. The guest area at the back of the pub has all been refurbished with beautiful oak and muted tones, very relaxing. Our room was very clean but there was no bath; apparently if you don't have long hair that you want to keep dry during a late evening shower, then the overhead drench shower is fab. I don't think any of the standard rooms had baths. If paying ful price the four poster rooms with stand alone baths would appear to be better value than the standard rooms (£110 as opposed to £90). We had room 10, and with the 2 singles made up into one huge Queen sized bed, was very comfortable. Looking over the car park we then had wonderful views out to the moor.

The young staff in the restaurant had all been very well trained, service was friendly, efficient and professional. The food however really let the place down. We had a meal included with our deal and rather wish we hadn't. There was loads and loads of it but it seemed as if the chef had been to Iceland; it was edible and definitley plentiful. If you like eating at a Hungry Horse then this is the place for you. Our two breakfasts however, were much better; better quality ingredients cooked more competently.

I think this would make a great place for walkers to stay, returning to calm , cosy and comfortable surroundings with a beer and a huge bed to fall into.

The George has recently been refurbished to a good standard and the rooms are very nice.
However, the food I received was awful !
I chose the mixed grill which comprised a piece of nearly Raw steak which was so tough that I couldn't cut it. A piece of very fatty gammon with a far from fresh egg on top.chicken and sausage were ok but the chips looked and tasted as if they were cooked in old oil.
The breakfast was no better
After waiting for the restaurant to eventually open, my rashers of bacon were undercooked and cold and the eggs were same as previous evening .. Far from fresh!!!
At checkout I was charged £10 more than the agreed room rate and after complaining about the food, was met with a shrug of the shoulders.
Won't ever return
Very poor food and very poor customer service.

I stayed at The George with a colleague on business. Came across the place last minute and im so glad I did. Fantastic room, very nice food at reasonable price and friendly, chatty staff. Would definitely stay again and would recommend without hesitation.
