Stayed at the George for two nights 30th and 31st of July on a groupon deal .my partner and i had booked it a few months ago, on arrival in this pretty village we had a very warm welcome very friendly. we were lucky enough to have booked room 1 and wow what a room. iv'e stayed in some nice rooms but for a small village inn this was outstanding. Huge four poster bed, huge bath, stunning wet/shower room, waterproof TV with LCD lights and a waterproof remote .... and yes a Bottle of wine too. My Partner being 6ft was in awe... Could of just stayed in the room for the entire stay.. We ate in the restaurant the first night very good if just a tad pricey.... both for the food and drink.... Breakfast on the first morning was superb well presented and plenty of choice second morning was a shambles waited over an hour for our breakfast ( forgot us had to ask twice ) no juice no glasses no bread..... in all fairness the waitress said everyone arrived at the same time but dont think one waitress is enough.. but it was fine in the end.. one suggestion the room has a huge window and the whole village can look in and see you so if your in the bath you have to keep pulling the heavy curtains thin vertical or roller blind would be good.. All in All excellent stay, great place, brilliant staff, awesome room well worth a visit..... Thankyou all..

The George at Hatherleigh (near Okehampton, Devon) is a great find. Recently rebuilt following a fire, this beautiful thatched hotel has everything you could wish for if you want a weekend break. Lovely bedrooms with matching bathrooms, friendly staff and a very helpful Manager(ess). Breakfast is cooked to order and they have a great dinner menu (I can recommend the goat's cheese risotto!).
By chance, we booked 2 nights over the weekend 29/30 July and were delighted to discover that it was the annual Hatherleigh Festival - great bands, art exhibitions etc.

Stayed 2 nights over weekend, Lovely hotel, rooms are excellent. flat screen TV, comfy massive dounle bed, plenty of towels, free bottle of water in your room and even sleep spray provided for anyone who may be a light sleeper. Our room had a big powerfull shower head which was very nice, this was my girlfriends favourite thing about the weekend! Nice area, lots of nice walks. Co-Op 30 seconds away so you never go hungry! Staff are friendly, if nobody around try outside in the smoking area (think it must be in the staff contacts that you have to smoke to work here) parking was no problem, spaces at both front and back of Hotel. Let down was the food quantity and service in the evening, very busy in the restaurant on Saturday evening and the portions were quite small considering what you pay. Breakfast is lovely. Would definitely stay again but would eat elsewhere in the evening if like me you like big portions.

On the way back home after a KGB Deal 2 night stay. After looking on the hotel website, we expected an awful lot more than we got unfortunately. The staff were friendly but hung around outside of the hotel smoking and chatting and it made us feel uncomfortable passing them. We had a back room which was nice but the TV reception wasn't great and the room was extremely hot because of the thatch above. There is no air conditioning so asked for a fan but was told they had none. I recently had a very bad fall in a shower over a bath, and as the ensuite shower was the same setup, asked for a rubber mat so
that I wouldnt slip but was told they had none of those either. We ate in the restaurant one night and although the food was ok, it was nothing special and I think a bit expensive. Breakfast was really lovely apart from a tricky toaster which we managed in the end and apart from the bread just left on the table for anyone to handle as they wished, oh and apart from finding I was drinking from my juice frim a dirty glass one morning. The service was not what I was expecting from what seemed like a good class hotel and the car park is
tricky to find without direction.

Superb hotel and pub. Hard to fault. The meals in the hotel we on the expencive side for what you got. Eg. Belly of pork came with only 2 very small potatoes and 4 spinage leaves and nothing else and was around the £10 mark.
The steak burger and chips was very poor ....very very tough in fact, not home made. I could only give the burger 1 out of ten. Shame as is is not difficult to make a real steak burger out of extra lean steak mince and sesoning. This is like the difference between chalk and cheese.
The breakfasts on the other hand were very very good??

A lovely two day stay in a very attractive newly rebuilt hotel. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Food excellent. Only one complaint, well two really - dogs allowed in the restaurant and 2 of the waitresses stroking and scratching the dogs whilst working, one even feeding a dog from her hand.

Room Tip: Room 8 has a very limited skylight view
