“Typical Grotto Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Polenta, Risotto, Brasato, Spezzatino, Cold Cuts, Salads. Lovely atmosphere, great outdoor terrace with stone tables and benches and an outdoor open fire where they cook the polenta in an enormous copper cauldron.
If you plan to visit over the weekend, then it is better that you reserve, it is usually always packed especially between 6.30 - 9.00.
Plenty of space inside as well. Staff is kind, friendly and know their way around. The owners, a young couple are charming, friendly and make you feel welcome. The Dutch waiter is great and has a lot of sense of humor, right person in the right place.
Strange that the risotto was overcooked (reviewer) as I thought it was just perfect and modesty apart I know what risotto tastes like.

“Authentic local grotto”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Nice grotto, wonderful ambiance, stone tables, sun, Ticino feeling. Family with friends and kids (9 people). Excellent service, fast and attentive. Food was great. Take the real Ticino polenta.

“expecting more!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

It's a typical local, traditional restaurant. The atmosphere was easy going with friendly staffs. We started with a platter of cold cut meat, cheese platter and some pickled. Risotto was tasty but overcooked. House wine and dessert were fine. Overall it was a nice restaurant but nothing special.

“Great Spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Love this place.

Very warm and friendly staff (who speak good English). A very authentic experience with hearty food. I go for the wooden platter of local meats and cheeses to start, mountain sausage and white beans in tomato sauce for main course, no room for pudding! Excellent house wine - chilled red was gorgeous on a hot summer's evening.

Very reasonably priced for the area and worth getting away from the main drag of glitzy nearby Ascona for a proper taste of Switzerland.

“Good, traditional food -- reasonably priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

This is a typical swiss restaurant with a reasonably priced kitchen -- especially compared to standard prices in this region. The service was extremely helpful and we enjoyed chatting with the young man from the Netherlands who was there to improve his Italian but spoke excellent German and English and was eager to help us choose something from the menu. Everything looks and tastes traditional and there is no feeling of tourist-rip-off by calling the place Grotto. Sure, there is an English Menu to help with the choices but you sit between friends and neighbours of the owners as well as other tourists who are there during the summertime and many of them clearly come back everytime they visit the area.
