“Enjoyable stay”
Reviewed August 2, 2010

My husband and I arrived very early to check in at Masseria Pescu and even so it was no problem for the owners Giuliana and Fernando. They greeted us very warmly and offered us a coffee as we settled in.
Fernando was very informative about the area and gave us a very useful map marking various restaurants around the region, even going into such details as recommendations, meat or fish restaurants and an indication of price. We found this map invaluable.
The room we stayed in was very spacious, comfortable and clean and had the most beautiful vaulted ceiling. The courtyard garden outside of the rooms was very pretty and was a lovely setting to have breakfast in each morning.
The infinity pool was wonderful to relax by and cool down in on the hot summer afternoons.
It is set in a fantastic location for visiting places such as Specchia, Alessano and Gallipoli.
We spent a very enjoyable few days at Masseria Pescu and were made to feel very welcome.

Stayed June 2010, traveled as a couple

We spent a long time researching Masseria before travelling to Puglia, and eventually we decided on Masseria Pescu. In theory it had everything we were looking for: proximity to the beaches of Salento on the Ionian sea, a pool, a masseria. Having already stayed in a fantastic one (Masseria Casamassima) the night before, and knowing that we were paying 50% more for Pescu, our expectations were high! We had pre-booked a 4 day stay and had been assured that there were 40 restaurants nearby, and a nice village within walking distance (600m).

Finding the place from the hand-drawn map on their website was surprisingly easy, except we thought we had gone wrong due to the fact that there were no olive groves to be seen - only a dingy site which seemed to be a storage place for tractors and construction equipment...just past that is a very rusty gate that leads into a small area of rough ground that is used as a carpark.

First impressions were poor - the surroundings were grimy and industrial - it was like 'getting back to a construction site' rather than 'getting back to nature'. With the misgivings that come with bad first impressions coupled with a 30% booking paid for a 4 day stay, we enterred the Masseria to meet the staff, an elderly couple called Giuliana and Fernando. They were over-whelming and exhausting, sitting us down and offering us beer, coffee, water, tea etc etc., and wanting to tell us about the surrounding area. They seemed to be trying too hard and the experience felt forced and unnatural. They did, however, tell us that the 40 restaurants we had been promised were scattered across the Salento peninsula with only 1 restaurant within walking distance. This was disheartening as we are wine-lovers and had been looking forward to trying Salice Salento and Primitivo (local specialities) with dinner. Driving to a restaurant thus, for us, was not an option.

We were given a quick tour of the Masseria, and shown to the infinity pool that had caught our interest on their website. The area around the pool wasn't great - weeds growing everywhere, broken crockery littering the ground, cushions from the deck chairs scattered around the ground. It wasn't a great second impression. Our room, on the other hand was quite nice - the bathroom was well done and the king size bed was comfortable. We put our stuff in and retired to the deck chairs next to the pool for a read before heading out.
Unfortunately, the cushion my girlfriend retrieved from the floor to use had been used as a toilet by a cat, and it soaked through into her clothes. Grim.

Eventually we decided to head into Presicce to find one of the restaurants they had told us about. We drove in, as we weren't sure how easy it would be to find. Lucky we did, as while the outskirts of Presicce might be within 600m of the Masseria, the restaurant is about 3km away, making a round trip of 6km through shabby, graffiti'd streets that aren't exactly inviting for walking through at night.

The restaurant, when we found it, was essentially a bad pizza takeaway joint, with several TVs on and 10-15 people standing around waiting for their takeaway to be ready. We did as the locals, went and bought a bottle of wine in the local supermarket (the only one we could find was a EuroSpin - a kind of Italian Lidl/Aldi/Walmart look-alike - cheap with limited selection). The pizza was poor, and the wine a bit better. We had to eat it in our room - it was all a bit grim and not what we had in mind when we decided to treat ourselves to a stay in a Masseria.

We decided to leave, and the following day we told the owners. The discussion turned very ugly, with Fernando getting angry and shouting at us that we had to stay for at least three days. They refused to return any of our deposit, and it was a very ugly, somewhat scary experience.

The Masseria is too small (only 6 rooms), and is also lived in by the owners, everytime we left our room, they were around, watching us, and it made us feel very uncomfortable. We felt as if we were boarders in someone's home, rather than guests in a hotel. The surroundings of the Masseria are grim - a parking with alot of construction equipment. The village of Presicce is quite grim with no facilities to speak of. The owners are over-bearing and over-familiar, and try too hard - they have little concept of customer service and getting angry and seeming to be close to violence when people leave early is not exactly endearing. It is very over-priced - costing more than any other Masseria we went to, with the worst service and surroundings.

I would recomend in the strongest possible terms going elsewhere if you are looking for a Masseria experience in Southern Italy. I would suggest you find somewhere with an on-site restaurant and only worry if the place has a pool if you are sure that the water will be warm. The freezing water in the pool in Pescu did not encourage one to swim...

I need to reply because I think this article wrong and hurtful towards our dignity and our village Presicce
1-Our manor farm is placed on a hillock that dominates the village of Presicce from which is 600 meters away, it is immersed in a wood of 22.000mq, formed by Mediterranean scrub and secular oak trees; in the back of our manor farm there are olive trees that extend for a lot of kilometres.
Close to the manor farm there is a craftsman that produces awnings but all that isn't sufficient to define this area a "construction site" or an "industrial zone".....
Even if in late September, when the authors of the article came to stay here, the area wasn't at its best because of several rainy days and an high north wind.
2-We have done a long search and selection to suggest our clients the best places to visit and savour our typical cuisine, this has always been appreciated by our clients (more than 250 annually).

3-The regulations provide for the payment of the amount due for the whole reservation, in case of rethink at the last minute; we retained the deposit only.
4- The village of Presicce is a delightful example of baroque architecture and among its ancient narrow streets you can look up to fine buildings and houses dated from 1200, besides the several peculiarity that you can visit every day with the help of a tourist guide.

6- In the Village there are three big supermarkets, one of them is 400 meter away the farm, it is attended by people coming from near villages because its products are good and various.
We accept criticisms positively because they make better our service but only if they are plausible.
In this case the clients arrived at 5,00p.m. and left next morning at 10.00 am , this short time was not enough to judge and to realize all aspects of our structure (XVII century) and of the environment.
