“Beautiful View!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2013

We were in Switzerland for a 50th wedding anniversary party which happened to be taking place at The Hotel Walzenhausen. We actually didn't know it would be held there when we booked the hotel, so this was a bonus as we didn't have to drive after the party. Overall, I would say the best things about this place are the included breakfast & the view of Bodensee (which you can see while you're eating breakfast.) It's not the best hotel we've ever stayed at in Switzerland but it's nice enough. It's in a good location to get around & see the beautiful Swiss sights & very close to Austria & easy access to Germany. We would stay there again.

We stayed here last weekend, over Easter, while on a cyle-tour of Lake Constance. The rooms in the hotel were cozy and beautiful. We received an important piece of advice for cyclists when I called for the reservation, that is to take the little, cog-wheeled railroad train from neighboring Rheinbeck, which is right on the lake, to the top of the mountain, Walzenhausen. The hotel is right at the train station at the top. We, however, ignored this advice because we were feeling spry and ended up (after cycling on the lake shore for 4 hours) pushing our bikes, and trailers with children in them, up the mountain for 3 kilometers, which was fairly awful business, and took more than an hour. If you're arriving on a bike, by all means, get on that train (you'll need a ticket for yourself and for your bike)!
The only cons were that the room was very warm at night, even with all the radiators turned off, and also, the room had a lovely, fancy, steam shower/sauna type thing in the bathroom, but the water pressure on the top of the hotel was just not sufficient to do it justice. Water basically dribbles out the steam vents.
Pros were that the hotel was very accomodating to us travelling by bike, with 2 young children. They had set up very nice children's beds in the room, and the Easter Bunny had arrived before us and left 2 gorgeous Easter baskets for the children. This, I think was the high-point for them of the whole trip. The restaurant was very nice for dinner, and the breakfast included was wonderful as was the staff.
It was a bit on the expensive side for us (400 CHF for one night) by the time we checked out, which included a very nice dinner and breakfast, that might be the only thing that would prevent me from returning, but it was a lovely stay, so we might just do it again anyways.

Thank you so much for your detailed report here on trip advisor. I am very happy that you enjoyed your trip so much, and am very happy your children enjoyed that the easter bunny passed by. Should you read that I would love you to contact me for me to fully understand the water problem, so that I can solve it. Tel. +41 71 886 21 16 or erich.dasen@swissdreamshotels.com

Overall very pleased; price is just right for a standard double with breakfast included. Super clean in room and common parts, very quiet with efficient and friendly staff. Views are tremendous, terrain of village makes parking a little difficult but would not really cause a great problem unless you are a big group with lots of luggage. Food and service at function and a separate dinner were superb but a little slow at Sunday breakfast which does in fact serve hot food. Taking the property as a whole, most enjoyable.

Room Tip: View of Bodensee if possible.

My disappointment with the hotel began as soon as I parked in their parking lot below the hotel. There was a locked door with no phone to reception and no instructions on how to get to the lobby. I walked 3 different ways before I found the right steps to the entrance (go right!).

At reception I was told that the hotel reservation agent whom I had exchanged emails with about the price for children had made a mistake -- and that I owed an additional 72 Swiss Francs for my 12 year old! When I refused to pay this, the front desk clerk proceeded to bargain hard with me like the money would come out of his own paycheck. I ultimately paid an extra 40 Francs for no reason other than it was already nighttime and I did not feel like making an extended scene in front of my children. Any reasonable hotel would have admitted their mistake and waived the fee -- especially since I was told that 11 year olds stay free!

The standard room we received was more adequate. Neat and clean, but in need of some updating (except for the flat screen TV). More like what you would expect from a good 3-star hotel.

Breakfast was again disappointing. Again, it was more like that of a 3 star than a 4 star hotel. No hot dishes (except boil your own egg -- other egg dishes extra). Other than a good cheese board, it was a very lean assortment of cold dishes. In fact so lean that I had to ask the waitress to replenish the buffet so I could have a couple pieces of salami. After 10 minutes, she did, but brought out a total of about 5 pieces for the dining room (which had at least 8 tables in use). If you didn't rush the buffet table, you were again out of luck.

The most redeeming feature of the property is the view, which is nice in good weather. Our bad luck streak continued with dense fog, so no view for us.

All in all, a decent facility in a nice hilltop location, but poorly managed. For better value, I would suggest staying just across the border in Austria, where hotels deliver significantly more value for the money, especially given the current over-valuation of the Swiss Franc.

Staff for gentle, contains an old building and modern building, the building housing Recommend Air conditioner in summer because the weather is relatively warm village.
A beautiful village and its people for a very gentle, close to the largest lake in Europe" bodensee " and close to the borders of Austria and Germany, five minutes by car.
