“Best Part of Honeymoon”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

My wife and I got married in 2012 (Oct/Nov 2012 wasn't an option for dates travelled) and I can't believe it took me this long to write a review for Castello delle Serre. We travelled all over Italy and we both agree that Castello delle Serre was the best place we stayed. Sal, Antonio and Shelley treated us like family. We were the last guests to stay for season so for all but 1 night we were the only guests at the castle. We had an amazing meal, fantastic wine, great stories and even better memories. We truly hope we can return to Castello delle Serre as soon as possible. If you go to Italy and skip this place you are doing yourself a disservice. I promise.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Deluxe Suite. It does not get any better than sitting on the private roof of the t...

My wife and I spent 5 magical days at Castello delle Serre. From the moment you arrive you are treated like dear friends by Sal and his lovely family Antonio and Shelley. Their hospitality is amazing. The Castle has been beautifully restored with incredible attention to detail. The fresco restorations are works of art. Our room was comfortable, large and had a breathtaking view of the Tuscan countryside and sunsets. On top of this, the castle is perfectly situated to allow for convenient day trips to towns such as Cortona, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Siena, Pienza and many others. At breakfast Sal and the family will help to plan your day including wineries to visit, what restaurants and shops to enjoy, and what sites to see in the towns. This information is invaluable and will make your trip all the more enjoyable. If you ask, Sal will also happily regale you with the history of the region as well. If you are lucky enough to be there when Sal prepares a meal it should not be missed. This could well be the best meal you have in Italy. The walled medieval town of Serre, in which the castle sits, is remarkable as well having changed little over the centuries and my wife and I enjoyed just strolling around its twisting narrow streets and paths. In short, Castello delle Serre is perfect location from which to explore the Tuscan countryside and we will definitely be returning!

Pictures and a website don't do this castle justice! The history of this property, its perfect location in Tuscany and the personal service you get here made this our favorite stay on our 2 week honeymoon. Sal, the owner, will immediately become a dear friend. He gave my husband and I a tour of the castle, and made sure we were totally comfortable after a long, stressful day of driving thru Italy. We originally booked the castle for 2 nights, but ended up loving it and Sal so much, we extended our stay another night. Each morning at breakfast (which was awesome), Sal mapped out our day of sightseeing and wine tasting...directing us to the most important sights, towns and wineries. He provided us with maps, directions....and dinner suggestions that were the best meals we had on our trip (and we went everywhere!). When it came time to leave, I didn't want to. We already miss Sal and his great personality. His passion for the property, the history of Italy and food is infectious. I can't wait to return to Castello delle Serre!

Room Tip: Ask to see the dungeon/wine cellar in the castle....and be sure to eat at the nearby farmhouse resta...

We absolutely loved our 3-night stay here. The family (father, son, and daughter-in-law) make this an exceptional option from which to enjoy Tuscany. The location is central to Siena, Chianti, Montalcino, and Montepulciano: an IDEAL starting point for multiple day trips. We received a complementary upgrade to a tower suite, which was wonderful (although I would not recommend the narrow, circular staircase for anyone with mobility issues). Parking was convenient and help with bags/car immediately provided. The room was spacious, clean, and quite lovely. The grounds are beautiful and unique, the location is fantastic, but it is truly the family that makes this such an exceptional choice. During our stay, each family member at some point sat down with us and provided extensive recommendations and directions/maps for each of our day trips (e.g., vineyard and restaurant recommendations, where to park, where to avoid ZTLs, unique points of interest that we had not considered). They have a gift at making guests feel like family and it was hugs, not handshakes, given at our departure. In preparing for our trip, we ran out of time when it came to investigating specific destinations in Tuscany, but it worked out perfectly. We could not fault a single recommendation that was made. Our only disappointment (other than not having an extra day or two), we missed out on a dinner prepared by Salvatore - we understood from a number of repeat guests staying there that they are not to be missed if you have the opportunity. A side note, we found both restaurants in town – the lovely Farmhouse and the casual pizzeria (while quite different) both worth a stop. We would not hesitate to return and strongly recommend the Castello delle Serre for those wishing to explore the Tuscan countryside.

We recently enjoyed a four night stay at this beautiful property. Our room was large and comfortable with the most amazing sunrises across the terracotta roof tops. Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful hosts who gave 200% to ensure a great stay. The Castello is at the top of an amazing walled village- if you stay do go and discover beyond the property. A lovely fresh breakfast was enjoyed each morning by the pool with directions and suggestions for day excursions. A highlight of our trip.

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay at Castello delle Serre for our last 3 nights in Italy this past July. It was definitely the highlight of our trip. From the moment we arrived we felt at home. Shelley, Antonio, Sal, Fabio and David are great hosts. They provided great tips and directions for all our day trips to the neighboring towns. One of our nights we were lucky enough to experience one of Sal's homemade dinners in a beautiful setting and meeting great people!
We can't wait to return - looking forward to seeing the renovations and the new additions.

Room Tip: All rooms are different and have their own special charm.

If you have taken the time to read any of these reviews you already realize this is no ordinary hotel. In fact it isn't a hotel at all, it is truly a castle. Salvatore, Antonio and Shelley treat you as if you are guests in their home. Indeed you are, as it is their home as well. The castle is on the historical registry,so the renovations are held to a very high standard, but still the rooms remain very warm and inviting. I love that no two are alike. We were fortunate enough to experience two dinners prepared by Salvatore. We happened to pass him on our way to breakfast and he was already preparing that evenings meal. We returned from a day out of a picture book and he was still cooking! He prepped all day and let me just say it was well worth every minute he put into it!! They were our favorite dinners of the entire 16 day vacation. But truly the highlight of our stay was the family atmosphere that pervades everything they do. I had spent 4 months searching, investigating and planning for the perfect 20th anniversary trip for my wife and I. The rooftop suite at The Grand Tremezzo Hotel in Lake Como followed by a week on the Champs Élysées just couldn't compare to the 4 magical days and nights spent at the castle.
Needless to say, my wife thinks I am brilliant and of course we have made plans to return.
