Reviewed January 5, 2012

We had occasion to stay at The Woolpack for just the night of 1 January 2012.
I would give it a general rating of “Just about ok”.
On the plus side:
The food was excellent with the exception of the beef served with the Sunday lunch which was totally un chewable.
Without exception the staff were all cheerful, helpful, sociable and seemed very efficient.
The beds were surprisingly most comfortable
On the minus side :
Our room (No 5) suffered from a continuous machinery vibration (or humming noise) presumably from the nearby heating unit ?. When we mentioned this to the downstairs staff one girl said it was from the chimney fan, which was rather silly because the chimney fan was about 30 ft away on the corner of the building. We were further told the noise would cease at night but the continuous vibration noise continued all night. MOST unsatisfactory and very unpleasant. We could not possibly have stayed a second night in that room !.
We thought the hotel building in general was somewhat “Tacky” and the room we were allocated could certainly benefit from a facelift.
The room cleaning service was pretty poor. When we moved in there were still what appeared to be potato crisp crumbs on the carpet around the bed.
A lot of accumulated dirt on the sash window and we noted the communal stairs handrail (and the top edge of the radiator opposite) was quite deeply ingrained with dirt from continuous hand use.
If pushed we would stay again but certainly NOT at the full £70+ rate and certainly NOT in room 5.
I only wish I could be more positive but I must speak as I find. In retrospect I imagine we were allocated the noisy room since we were only booked for one night. I do hope the management take my points on board because it’s a lovely rural location and friendly place to stay.
( I have already copied the foregoing to the Old English Hotels Group HQ 3 days ago but so far no response )

Room Tip: See machinery noise issue in my review)

My Partner and I stayed 3 nights at the Woolpack over Christmas. found Toni and Chris were very friendly, Also there staff have the same attitude. There was some mix up in the booking but it was soon sorted by Toni , the food was of a good standard. all in all we had a very relaxed Christmas.

My husband and I stayed at the Woolpack for 3 nights from 16th December, we were actually away for my 30th Birthday with my mum and step dad, plus a couple of friends of mine, one of whom has a 6 month old baby. So there was a variety of ages in our group. We were all made to feel very welcome and nothing but friendly and helpful staff the whole weekend. The rooms were very comfortable and clean, our room was stunningly decorated with a gorgeous walk in shower and beautiful fire place.

We had breakfast each morning and was impressed with the choice, not only a cooked breakfast to order, there was also a variety of cereals, pastries etc. We also decided to stay there for dinner each evening as the bar/restaurant area is so comfortable and has a varied menu choice.

It is in an ideal location to visit Longleat safari Park and for bath city centre. We got the bus into bath as there is a bus stop just up the road from the pub and only took about 30 mins.

I do not usually leave reviews but I really wanted to as Chris, Toni and the team went out of their way to make us feel welcome and made my birthday weekend a very special one to remember.

Thank you!

We stayed 2 nights in the Woolpack in December. Loved the country pub character, open fire in the pub made it feel very homely. The food was definitely good value for money (big portions) good honest pub food. We were made to feel welcome by Chris and Toni the proprietors and team of staff on our arrival and right throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble. I would recommend anyone who either just wants a quiet breakaway or a crazy shopping trip to Bath and a visit to Longleat to stay here, as you have the idyllic village setting with both Longleat and Bath not too far away. Thank you to Chris, Toni and all the staff.

Room Tip: What i would say is go for the Luxury rooms they have to offer, we regret staying a standard room, a...

We have just returned from a wonderful weekend spent at The Woolpack - our second visit but refurbished since our last trip. We wish to thank Chris, Toni and every one of the staff for their friendly and efficient welcome. The breakfast was excellent, with loads of choice for all tastes and we spent a couple of lovely evenings in the cosy but busy bar. We will be back!

We were on a deal with Country Inns so the value was very good. The room, which was in the atticks was comfortable (once you had learnt to avoid the beams) and very clean but the bathroom needed some attention to the grouting and it was difficult to use the shower due to the sloping ceiling - it would be no good for someone tall. The main problem was a leaking toilet (fortunately clean water) which we reported immediately. It was mopped up and we were given the roll of paper to mop it up ourselves. This we had to do every time we used the bathroom as nothing further was done about it.
The staff were very friendly and the breakfasts were superb with lots of choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor if you are tall.
