We were looking for a place to stay out of season in Appledore and after reading the reviews on this site Raleigh House seemed to fit the bill. And it was a good choice - the reviews are spot on with a very cosy and private bedroom, ensuite and separate lounge area on the 3rd floor (stairs may be a bit steep for the older / less mobile visitor) ensuring we had a very comfortable stay. Val and Paul made us most welcome - they were friendly & helpful without being obtrusive - and the breakfast they serve up is great. and kept us going all day. Perfect hosts!
The house location is great for wandering off around Appledore on foot and as a base for exploring further afield was great.
A short drive to Instow and a hot Pasty fresh from the village store eaten on the beach was ace. A bit further afield to Braunton and the wide open spaces and massive sand dunes was worth the hike from the car park. Just a short drive out along the North Coast toward Clovelly - we stopped at Buck Mills on Val's advice - and had a great walk through the small village and down onto a deserted beach where we watched dolphins in the bay. Fish and Chips from the chippy on the Quayside in Bideford are also worth a go. Raleigh House with Paul and Val - Thoroughly recommended!
