“Economic Crisis, what Economic Crisis?”
Reviewed May 17, 2009

My partner and I stayed two nights here in May this year. Clearly the owners of this place aren't short of business judging by the rates they charge for this place, its astronomically overpriced, befitting of a 4-5 star luxury hotel or boutique accommodation, that a run down apartment. To begin with, they didn't have a record of our reservation but kindly offered to put us in a larger room than we had booked. I can't imagine how small the bed in the original room must have been, because in the 1 bed apartment we got, (nice outlook overlooking the street) the bed certainly was not a queen as advertised. I notice we're not the first to complain about the bed size and clearly the owners don't care either, because the advertising literature and website still claim they have queen beds in all the rooms. They are only doubles and small ones at that. To really compound this, we discovered that the bedroom had no curtains on the windows, except for the transparent netting hanging from the curtain rail. Fortunately we managed to hang the blanket provided, from the "curtain" rail to try and block out the light. Once we had all this sorted and climbed into the (micro) bed for the night, we discovered to our delight that the extractor fan in the bathroom didn't turn off and runs continuously, providing an annoying dull hum 24/7. We should have complained at this stage, however it was a Birthday weekend and we decided to let things slide and just enjoy ourselves. However, the final straw in persuading me to write this review was when, the following evening, we decided to watch a dvd we'd brought with us, only to discover that there was no dvd remote control, so we were unable to operate and select options on the dvd player and watch what we wanted! To top it all off, the place isn't particularly clean. The shower was good though. Talk about paying a premium for location. Although, the ocean beaches are still about a 20-30 minute walk away. Very overpriced.

These apartments were clean. The process for accessing the property was well organised. The pool looked clean, is apparently heated, but is very small. The bed was comfortable though small. The cafe was very nice. The location was great - right over the road from Snapperman Beach. The noise levels were fine for an apartment block. I often find that in self catering properties the kitchen utensils etc are in really bad condition - they weren't too bad here though the microwave was broken. There were no curtains - only nets! It would be a nightmare on a summer morning. There was no hairdryer.

There is nothing wrong with these apartments but they are neither luxury nor 4 star. I realise that most accomodation in the Northern Beaches is quite pricey but we did feel these people were not out for repeat business, but getting as much money out of you as possible while you're there. We paid $290 per night for a one bed apt, in winter! They wanted $30 a night to borrow a portacot and highchair - needless to say we brought our own. They charge $10 if you need any spare towels - we were only given two even though there were three of us staying.

I specifically asked if there was enough room in the one bed apt for a cot and was told some of them were quite small but that they would put us in a larger one bed apt. The apt was really a studio apt with a sliding door across the bed area. It was the smallest s/c place we've ever stayed, we only just managed to jam the cot in between the end of the bed and the window. For this reason we left after one night even though we'd paid for two.
It would have been fine for a couple but anyone with a baby/children definitely needs the 2 bed apt.

Its a shame, if they were just a touch bigger and/or more reasonably priced we would have gone back.

  • Liked — Location and cafe
  • Disliked — Lack of VFM and 'bush view' was trees and a car park
