Our first impression of the Astoria was not good as the room we were allocated, although clean, was small, in desperate need of an overhaul and had a depressing feel about it. This was mainly due to the fluorescent strip lighting for the main source of light and also strip lights above each bed. The beds faced the fridge and the patio door which had no curtains. Our privacy was in the form of a sliding metal blind (the type you might find on the front of a shop window). We felt like we were sleeping in a prison kitchen! The bathroom also left a lot to be desired. Apart from the dilapidated decor, the shower head was loose, so every time we turned it on, the force of the water made the head pivot backwards, sending the water in a horizontal jet above our heads on to the opposite wall!

We did try to change rooms but the one we were shown did not fare much better than the one we had so we stayed put. The rest of the Hotel was mostly clean but again looked very dated and tired looking. I must admit we initially felt like flying back home. However, we decided to make the best of it and tried to ignore our depressing room.

On the plus side (yes, surprisingly there was a plus side) the restaurant which is right next to the beach was very nice, lovely views and the food good. The owners were mainly friendly but could be abrupt if you caught them at the wrong time.

The sea is absolutely beautiful. Perfectly safe for swimming and the beach good for chilling out.

The resort of Alikes is not much to write home about - the usual souvenir shops, purpose built bars and restaurants. In the evening, the town throngs with horse and buggies for hire, driven by greeks dressed up as cowboys whistling tunes from spaghetti westerns - very strange!

During the day, we found some pleasant walks out of town, taking in the picturesque coastline.

I don't think we'll be going back to that Resort or Hotel, but in its defence, there were other guests staying at the Astoria who thought it was great and had stayed there on many occasions. One man's meat is another man's poison I suppose!

We stayed for a week (Family of two adults and two small kids).
The rooms were basic and clean. The dining area next to the beach was very pleasent. Our two small kids loved the beach which was very safe and not too crowded. Food was fine.
Our holiday was a late availability deal and so the hotel was good value for money.
The staff were friendly.
Not a hotel for an active holiday but great to chill.

The location of the hotel (on the beach) is just perfect.

We did feel a little as though we had stumbled into a private club as everyone we spoke to was on their fifth plus visit which did make us feel a bit like intruders. We got the impression that you are either 'in' with the owners or not.

The overall stay at the Astoria was very good and we had a wonderfully relaxing holiday.

Whatever you do don't be persuaded to take one of the rooms at the front of the hotel. The view of the hills is fine but the noise from the road unbearable. We had a front room on arrival but were lucky enough to be able to tranfer to a rear room overlooking the sea after the first night. If you have to pay more it really is worth it for the peace and quiet, views and I think much nicer rooms altogether. Fridges in the rooms are a real plus although some guests we spoke to were having to pay extra which is a bit money grabbing as is the air conditioning - essential but definately not cheap.

Food at the hotel is fairly priced and good but if you want a treat go to the Olympic Kitchen in the village which is superb and not expensive.

Would we return to Zante - definately worth another visit. Would we return to the Astoria - maybe. There are other equally good hotels on the same stretch of beach which we felt were possibly better value for money.

Just returned from holiday at the Astoria Hotel, we had a superb time and can highly reccomend all about it.
Situated right on the beach, with a staff that do their utmost to make your holiday all that you wish it to be.
Excellent food, excellent service, prices to match any in the resort, and very clean and welcoming.
We will be returning, thank you, Maria, Rena, Katerina and the rest of the staff.

we stayed at the astoria some 3 years ago, very nice meals but the people who run the hotel are not your typical greek friends, they are out to take the punters for what they can(a bit of this is discribed above).the front door is locked at 12midnight and when your late back the grandad(old man)is very rude to you! but this is just a base and will not stop you enjoying yourself in what we feel is the best place in the world for a relaxing time!
