My wife and I stayed at Hotel Smari after booking through a third party vendor. While it wasn't our first choice, we enjoyed the amenities offered and was a good choice for our price point. The rooms are not large (but that's not unusual in Iceland, so I've been told) but were comfortable and more than met our needs as a place to rest after exploring the country. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. It's a bit of a distance from Reykjavik if you are car-less but my wife and I took advantage of the citypass (unlimited bus rides) and found the buses to be more than adequate to get downtown. It was nice that the hotel was a pickup point for all the tours we used and that they were in quick contact with the tour company for confirmation and booking purposes. The traditional breakfast included with our reservation was a nice touch. Nothing fancy but filling and a good starting point for a day of exploring Iceland. Only downside was the presence of hordes of British teens and pre-teens that were very loud at all hours of the day (did they ever sleep?). This was not the hotel's fault by any means but might be a good idea to let chaperones know to keep the youngsters in check. Would recommend this hotel as a solid value for anyone who is not spending a ton of time in downtown Reykjavik. Also, don't be afraid to check out a few of the restaurants nearby. Oddly located in a business district but some nice options.

Room Tip: Tell front desk if you are having issues with noisy guests.

We stayed at Hotel Smari as part of our holiday package. The breakfast was amazing. There were Danish pastries, cereals, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, porridge. Ham, cheese, peppers, tomatoes. Different breads. Orange juice, tea, coffee. They even did a lunch pack if you were going out on trips at an extra cost. The rooms were clean, bed ok.
Stefan the manager was the most helpful person we met, nothing was too much trouble.
Only downside was the hotel was a little out of the centre of Reykjavik but it didn't stop us, we just used the local transport.
We would stay there again.

I got this amazing package and went to Iceland for the March Break with my family. Amazing place, even though it makes Switzerland cheap in comparison. Hotel Smari is located in Kopavogur, a solid 40 minutes by urban bus from Reykjavik. Keep that in mind. The hotel is comfortable, the breakfast is very good and the front desk personnel is simply amazing. If you are renting a car or making you visits based on bus tours, which pick you up at the hotel, that makes it perfect. If you want to go to Reykjavik many times, you may want to stay closer. BTW. There is not really much in Reykjavik. Iceland is the whole island, not their small urban centers.

Stayed here as a couple for three nights in March. Hotel is very clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It's just outside Reykjavik (about 25 minutes on the bus) but this didn't cause us any problems as most of the tour operators will collect you from the hotel. Breakfast was ample, lots of choice and easily set us up for the day (helpful as Iceland is expensive).

I would definitely recommend this hotel as your base while in Iceland. Simple but clean rooms, very helpful staff and a very good selection for breakfast. The hotel itself if located within a business park but don't let this put you off. Iceland's largest shopping centre just a few hundred meters away.
