We booked a package stay at the Bogmallo Resort in the last week of May, primarily as a treat for our parents who are both in their eighties and somewhat frail.
Our last visit to Goa had been quite some years ago and we did not really remember much about hotels or anything else. We chose the Bogmallo as it is right on the beach and my mother can not walk more than a very short distance without difficulty, so that factor alone eliminated most of the other places we were considering.
When I called reservations, I was given a local Mumbai contact - Mr Pierre Bonaud - who offered us a fairly decent rate on a 3 night package with all meals, airport transfers and a sightseeing trip and boat ride thrown in. Prices were not low but then most of the hotels we looked at had similar rates, so in that sense it was competitive.
We took a suite room for the parents and a deluxe next door for ourselves. The suite room was a bit of a rip off as the only difference was a teeny bit of extra space at the entrance. We found out later that the suites on other floors were substantially larger. In any event, both the rooms were spacious enough with balconies, very comfortable and aesthetically furnished with plenty of light coming in and a pleasing view of the sea.
The hotels rep was waiting for us at arrivals. It was a mere 15min from the airport, another plus point as the elders did not have to suffer a long drive.
Check in was smooth, with friendly staff right from the driver to the porter to the receptionists and everybody else. We were in time for the lunch buffet which was rather welcome.
All meals were served buffet style and I must admit that there was enough variety for the days we were there, without much repetion and a variety of local Goan and Indian cuisine. Vegetarians were also adequately catered to. In the evening, there was a live band in the restaurant. They were rather good! At breakfast time, they had freshly baked Goan Poee bread which when toasted and stuffed with butter, was out of this world!
Though there were plenty of good Goan restaurants on the Bogmallo beach itself, it would have been very difficult for my mother to walk there and it was for this reason that we availed of the package meals, which did not disappoint.
I must mention the exceptionally kind and warm service we received from Bella the Lobby Manager, and from Ianston at the restaurant. Everyone was very nice but these two were exceptional and deserve a special mention.
The hotel has a sprawling verandah facing the lawns, the pool and the sea. My parents enjoyed relaxing here. The weather was also very kind with sea breeze throughout the day and overcast skies making it very pleasant rather than hot and humid as it could well have been. It was easy to go for sunrise and sunset walks on the beach with direct access from the hotel itself.
A note about the sightseeing trip. This was by bus and my mother found it difficult to climb in and out the rather steep steps. Secondly, wherever the bus parked was a fair distance from the attraction, and a good distance from the jetty for the boat ride. My mother managed somehow with difficulty, but I strongly advise those who have difficulty in walking to avoid the trip by bus. It is better to hire a taxi for a half day trip as its much easier for taxis to park close to wherever you need to get to. Tourist taxis are readily available just outside the hotel gate at negotiable rates.
If my husband and I were to come to Goa again, I am not sure we would stay here again as the Bogmallo bay beach is small compared to the attractive long stretch of white Colva sands further south. But for this trip, it was just perfect.
Indians in general are respectful to elderly people. The staff here were a little extra caring and kind to my parents. I thank the staff of the Bogmallo from the bottom of my heart for giving my aged parents a truly wonderful holiday experience.
