We have known about this little tearoom for some time but when we were passing last summer, a coach party had just arrived so we gave it a miss. This year we were in luck ....well worth the wait. I'm sure the scones were freshly baked for us. They were large and warm and the helpings of jam and cream were generous. Good tea served in china cups. delightful garden but the wasps were being particularly bothersome so we sat indoors. Great little place on main road from Exeter towards the coast at Sidmouth.

This is a wonderfully quirky little tearoom/cafe with a great reputation which is well deserved. Plenty of outdoor seating in the garden or inside the quaint old tea room itself. Lovely friendly owners/staff who were totally honest about the invasion of wasps in the garden (a natural hazard in view of the weather and the attraction of the cream teas on offer). Proper tea served in china pots with proper cups and saucers (and yes, the tea really does taste better from bone china tea cups!). The cream tea came with probably the best home made scones we have had in a long time - mixture of fruit and plain - and more cream and jam than you could ever consume. Only slight disappointment is that the jam wasn't home made but very tasty nonetheless. Good choice of hot and cold drinks if you are not a fan of tea, and plenty of snacks/light lunches and home made cakes on the menu. Could recommend to absolutely anyone!

I happen to have found this tea room on the internet as it was on our way to Sidmouth. We were going to have afternoon tea but actually happened to arrive at lunchtime. Ordered 2 salads whicj were lovely. It was warm so able to sit outside which was a bonus. Didn`t need to be in Sidmouth till 5 so asked if owner was happy if we read our books and then had tea later. As it was not busy, it was no problem. The scones were fabulous. Very large and delicious. There was also loads of jam and Devon cream! Hopefully, we will return next year!

What a hidden gem....lovely old established gardens, tables and chairs dotted around in the garden. Sunshades for that sudden heatwave we had. Delicious cakes, cream tea wonderful. Good friendly service. Large car park. A definite must on the way home from Sidmouth and a day at the seaside. England needs places like this, very hard to find them.

We found ourselves on an unexpected break in Devon in the heatwave of March 2012.

Travelling long after lunch and hungry, we saw their sign and having a hound with us, thought the garden venue would be ideal.

I had cheese on toast made with doorsteps, local cheese and great chutney, my other half a gorgeous frittata. Both fresh, tasty and good value.

Next up was the reason for our visit, the cream teas. Fabulous. Homemade scones, local clotted cream and jam. They were delicious, and a generous serving.

As others have mentioned are hosts are welcoming and relaxed, the garden cute and welcomed hounds (water bowls provided).

Later during the stay we met up with odd friends who live locally. They confirmed that Southern Cross is well thought of locally.

We're heading back to Devon shortly and not only is this place a must to visit, we aim to stay there too!
