“Good hotel, but a bit overpriced”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

My stay in Durkin's was just fine : the room was spacy, the beds comfortable. There was Wifi access and the possibility of an early breakfast and check out.

However the room was a bit plain and there wasn't many other facilities in the hotel. For this price level, I would have expected a little bit more than the minimum.

Was back in Charlestown, Mayo over the weekend. Suggested going out for breakfast about 11am on Sat. and my brother in law suggested Durkins in Ballaghadereen. What a pleasant experience. We were served quickly. Waitress very efficient. We had orange juice, 1 mug of coffee and a pot of tea, toast. I had sausage and bacon. He had sausage, bacon and scrambled egg. They both came out perfectly cooked and nicely presented. The bill came to 11.65!! I just couldn't believe it. It was nicely busy and I'm not surprised. Keep up the good work.

We booked Dirkin's due to favourable reviews and we weren't disappointed. We found very attentive staff, a nice friendly atmosphere and nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were clean, warm and comfortable and the shower was hot and powerful.

Down the country for a bereavement, four of us went to Durkins for lunch. Our companions had stayed there the night before, had the breakfast, and were pleased with their room.

The staff were very friendly and the lunch came quickly after our order was placed even though the Bar/Rest was doing a brisk trade in meals.

One nice option on the menu I discovered is that when the lady says you can have Cream, or Ice Cream or Custard on the Apple Pie, you put a confused look onto your face and she will then say or ALL of them.

It came on a large deep plate loaded with the combination and was delicious.

The price for lunch was €10 each and the dessert at €4.30 was a steal.

The only problem with Durkans is that it would be a long drive from Dublin for Sunday Lunch: pity.

Room spacious and clean, plenty of hot water, great position in the town, towels changed daily, excellent breakfast and consistent over the four days, the staff were extremely friendly and approachable, great value for money, what more can you wish for ! Andrew & James thankyou, and look forward to staying again soon.

We stayed here in April due to a family bereavement. If i am being completely honest it wouldn't have been my first choice! However, it was really our only option at such short notice.

From the outside it does look like it needs a good lick of paint and the same can be said for the inside too! However, the rooms were clean and tidy and had the amenities we needed. My husband and I had a double room which had 2 double beds in it! Must say that the shower was good and lots of hot water!! Anything we didn't have (drinking water) they were happy to bring to our room. There were only a handful of residents staying here alonside us and this did mean it was lovely and quiet.

All staff we met (including the cleaner) were very friendly and the breakfast was certainly adequate. Again anything we needed (warm mlik) they were very happy to supply us with. We were staying with my 86 year old father in law and throughout our short stay they were extremely kind and patient with him. The food in the bar area is great and really exceeds itself! Many locals eat here and this is obvious testament to a great menu!!

Bearing in mind this is in the middle of Ireland, and i suspect that there is a struggle for business - there was a hotel there a couple of years ago that has since shut down- this is an 'ok' guesthouse. Other relatives of ours were staying at a different place and said the water was really cold as were the rooms! This really can't be said of Durkins!

Would I stay here again in future? If there was no other option then yes I would, only because of the super food, friendliness of staff and the fact you can have a drink in the bar and then walk to your room!! However, if one of the big chains decided to open a place here (which I can't see happening - not enough business) then Durkins would become my second choice!!

We had a weekend stay and found the staff to be very welcoming and courteous throughout our stay. The food was superb and the accommodation was of a good standard. The location was also great - right in the middle of town. I would strongly recommend Durkin's if you need to stay in Ballaghadereen.
