“The Best Way to Visit and Bird Coiba is with Javier!”

Bird Coiba - Birding Tours
Reviewed January 5, 2014

My husband and I were in Santa Catalina for a dive trip. My husband is a serious bird photographer and Lab Associate with Cornell's Ornithology Laboratory and he made inquiries about getting a guide to help us locate some of the endemics on Coiba. Javier was hands down the #1 referred person in the area for bird guiding. Lucky for us, Javier was able to go with us on short notice and he was able to arrange our boat transportation over and back to Coiba for the day. It was an interesting and productive trip. My husband got lots of photographs including the endemic Coiba Spinetail. Javier was a joy to be with, a very nice person who tries very hard to find the birds on your list as well as make for a pleasant day just being with him. He has lots of local knowledge and happily shares it with you about Coiba and the Santa Catalina. We were lucky to meet such a nice knowledgeable person!. He has been guiding groups out to Coiba for more than a decade! Jav

In October, we took our second trip to Coiba with Javier at Bird Coiba. We did an overnight trip from Santa Catalina to Coiba. I'm not a birder, but enjoyed the trip, snorkeling, hiking and Javier's knowledge of the wildlife and area. My parents are in their 60s while my husband and I are younger. I thought Javier did an outstanding job at balancing activities for everyone, and my parents LOVED snorkeling with him. My mom doesn't swim that much, but he swam out to the reef with her, and we felt better with his lifeguard experience. My favorite was our trip through Coiba's mangroves, though the macaws proved elusive.

Javier brought a cook along for our trip. Meals provided were good, my only complaint is that I like a bit more morning coffee. Ah well. Overall, the trip was memorable, and I recommend Bird Coiba, especially for small mixed age (younger and older) groups or mixed interest groups.
