“Relaxing, lovely food, great leisure facilities and toddler friendly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2010

We stayed at the hotel for our easter holiday and had a lovely time. Our room was lovely, comfortable bed , light new bathroom fittings, bedroom furniture all old style but very in keeping with the hotel.Plenty of white fluffy towels and robes.
The food is yummy and the service is swift. The wine by the glass is a little on the expensive side though.
The pool is super, nice a clean and the staff at the spa showed us around without us having to ask. Our toddler loved the pool and the different floats that were readily available.
Plenty of newspapers to read by the log fire and complimentary hot cross buns!
The creche was quiet the few times we visted and there was plenty of toys and things to do .Also my toddler loves playing with his rugby and football 24/7 and the staff around the hotel did not bat an eye lid once. Unfortunately the weather was not very good, so our little one was unable to use the outdoor facilities available. I am sure it is lovely in the summer and we shall return so we can participate in some Pimms out on the lawn!

I stayed here for one night in February and it was absolutely wonderful. The welcome at reception was very friendly, the room was wonderful, the food utterly delicious, the spa facilities completely relaxing, and the departure painful!
I can't wait to come back.

I know this hotel well. Stayed there a few times. Shabby but genteely so in a quaint British way.

Bought over by the Von Essen hotels and now a rip-off. Old gracious decor ripped out and silly stuff substituted. For example, rather than an elegant loveseat, you must now sit on the floor on cushions lolling about the coffee table.

All prices tripled..and nothing to show for it.

Sad.

We visited the Elms with our three kids -- a baby, 2 year old, and 4 year old -- and thought it was fantastic despite the very steep cost. Unllike Woolley Grange -- another of the hotels in the luxury family hotel chain -- this hotel has an indoor pool/hot tub, which makes all the difference if you are visiting in winter and it rains constantly. The creche and playground are also lovely and staff were wonderful. A warning about rooms: We were in interconnecting rooms in the coach house, which was a cold and wet one minute walk to the main hotel (not a big deal, but a pain if you are lugging kids, coats, baby bags, etc). The rooms were generally great, but the floors were thin. We woke up at midnight when the people below us came back to their rooms, and they undoubtedly were up at 6 am when our kids were bouncing around on their beds. No idea whether rooms in the "main house" are any quieter.

We booked this hotel for a short family break and can recommend the place if you are looking for a half decent hotel whilst knowing that you can bring the children and they will enjoy it too. Service is good, friendly and prompt and the nursery is bright and well equiped. Gardens are well designed and interesting. Food is good but should not be the main reason for your stay.

However, it is expensive whilst certainly not top of the range and we found the 'country hotel' theme a bit naff & o.t.t including the overfed labrador. If however, you are from Clapham and looking for a hotel 'to die for' this is the place to treat yourself to.

We have just returned from a four night stay at The Elms and cannot rate it highly enough. Having holidayed on many occasions with young children we're well of the saying, "If they are happy, you are happy" and this hotel ticks all the boxes in that regard. Our 7 year old boy didn't really want for anything during our stay allowing us some well deserved peace and some very important quality time together. The staff were obviously very family friendly and made us feel very welcome indeed. The Bear's Den staff were attentive and very friendly. They didn't just give him a games console remote either, although there was an XBox available. They had him doing drawings, paintings and craft. The pool was great and he improved his swimming no end. There was also an adventure playground, tennis courts and a selection of bikes and scooters for him to use. Because the emphasis at the hotel is on families there's a very relaxed feeling at breakfast and lunch, everyone is very family tolerant.

Adults are also very well looked after! The spa is clean and well attended, I had two of the most awesome massages and my wife a facial. There's also a steam room and sauna. The food is amazing and the main restaurant is exclusively for adults in the evening, a nice touch! Children can eat high-tea between 5 and 6pm or sit with their parents in the Pear Terrace restaurant, or anywhere else they wish, at any time in the evening. Our boy was taken back to the room with a couple of recent DVD's (on hand and free at reception) and was monitored by the front desk on an intercom. He loved the independence and so did we!

All in all an amazing few days that we will repeat in the very near future.

We've just returned from a 1 night/2day stay at the Elms with our 2 year old daughter and our Westie dog and the first thing to say is that for a family and dog friendly, good quality hotel you'd be hard pushed to beat it. The fact that it caters so well for children and dogs does of course mean that you have to allow for a little bit of roughness around the edges .... e.g: the hotel is more rustic country house charm than spotless (characterless) trendy chic and in many ways that's its strength - but if you were a couple looking for an escape from the kids and the associated "life" that they bring for example to lunch time or the pool area then you may choose to look elsewhere.

We stayed in the "Coach house Rooms" which is where you'll be if you bring your dog and the rooms are very cosy, clean and full of charm (if a little on the small side). The bathroom is quite big though and looks pretty new - the coach house rooms are aside from the main house which means they are very quiet and undisturbed at all times with none of that dreaded corridor noise you can sometimes encounter in the morning rush to get away.

We dined in the bar and the attached lounge rather than the main resturant and the food was great. Breakfast was also very good and our little girl was cattered for brilliantly wherever we ate.

The pool is really nice - especially if you go when its quiet ie: during or just after lunch time and the spa although small is lovely - the inside/outside jacuzi/hot tub is particulary good.

Downsides: Not many, but I thought on occasions the staff seemed a bit stretched. For instance we phoned for help with the T.V and the promised assistance never arrived. More annoying was when we arrived at about 12ish on the Sunday we were told that our room was empty and once it was cleaned we'd be able to book in early ...... 3 hours later we'd still not been booked in !! Whilst this wasn't a big issue because we had lunch and then a swim, it showed a lack of flexibility and unawareness of customer care - we knew the official check in was 3pm but knowing we were their I feel most hotels would make the effort to get us in our room ASAP - a small point maybe but it didn't make us feel very special !

The other niggle was when I settled the bill we'd been charged £3.50 for a childs breakfast (beans on toast) - I would have thought B+B would cover a small childs portion but apparantly not !

Those problems aside - it's a great place, in beautiful surroundings and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. It's not a cheap hotel either on the tariff or the extra's when your there but it's a very, very good hotel and if you've got young kids they'll love it.
