“Excellent child-friendly hotel and spa”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

We were a little uncertain about booking this at first, as we had stayed at another hotel in their chain (the 'Luxury Family Hotel' in the New Forest) which had really bad staff.

However, The Elms Hotel was fantastic. The staff were really switched on, the creche staff were particularly good with all the kids, playing games with them and creating fun activities.

The spa was pretty good, with a nice relaxation room to escape all the noise when needed. There was also a good choice of areas to eat - light lunches in the spa, bar food at the bar and excellent fine dining in the restaurant. We were intending to eat out on a couple of nights, but we actually stayed in for all four nights, as it was so relaxing and enjoyable.

We did a couple of shopping day trips to the nearby Westfield shopping centre (25 mins away) and Worcester (less exciting), but mostly enjoyed the grounds and facilities at the hotel. Even though we went in half-term week and they were fully booked, there was still plenty of space for our son to roam and enjoy things. Highly recommended.

(The only reason for rating the hotel 4 stars and not 5 is that they need to refurbish a bit with fresh carpets and so on, I guess having all the children around they are making best use of what they have until they redecorate - all fine, just a bit worn).

Room Tip: We had room 1, which has a nice view at the grounds out of the front of the hotel, and a roll-top ba...

Have not been here for many years - so when we went for lunch were quite surprised to see that The Elms had changed from a rather grand country house hotel to a family spa complex.

Lots of noisy children in residence so if you are looking for a quiet drink and relaxing lunch this may not be the best choice.

Food could not be faulted and both food and beverages were reasonably priced. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. However, on leaving we concluded, for us, the place has lost some of its former charm.

Room Tip: Only had lunch so unable to comment on rooms

Dear TraLonW,

Thank you for posting your review of your recent visit to the Spa at The Elms. We appreciate your comments regarding the hotel not being quite as it used to be and we embrace the changeover from a country house hotel and spa to a Luxury Family Hotel with family friendly Spa. With this, we are busy with families using the hotel, spa and dining areas, especially during school holidays, although we do still cater very well for adults wishing to enjoy a more relaxing spa day or lunch...we would just recommend, if this is the day you are seeking, to visit us during term time as this is more suited to the pre-school families.

We do hope this visit doesn't deter you from visiting us again as we would love to welcome you back, I will be sure to pass on your kind comments regarding the food & drink to the relevant departments.

Kind Regards

We found The Elms by chance, but what a beautiful, tranquil setting to spend a weekend. I travel extensively with work so it was delightful to find a hotel so accomodating and homely. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with open arms and nothing was too much trouble.
The family approach is definitely a winning theme. The hotel offers a great service for the whole family and children are made to feel welcome and are comfortable and relaxed in the environment. The service offered by The Elms ensured that myself and my wife enjoyed some quality time together. It was fantastic to have the Spa on site and we took full advantage of the pool and the cafe. It was a great place to relax and while away a few hours on a rainy Saturday. The food and service in the restaurant were excellent. The food was both delicious and interesting. The hotel has got a unique homely feel about it and it was delightful to relax in the lounge with papers and a drink. The staff were excellent professional, yet extremely personable a fine balance to get right. The Elms is a hidden gem in rural Worcestershire and we all look forward to returning in the very near future.

I would like to thank all the staff at The Elms for a helping make our stay so enjoyable. I loved the spa, the kids loved The Bear's Den and we all agreed the food was fabulous. I really liked the family approach and this added to our relaxing time- I didn't have to worry about the kids making noise or a mess. Thank you once again. I look forward to a return visit soon...

Our experiences with the staff at The Elms from our first conversation was easy, warm, and very accommodating. Fern and Sally at the front desk couldn't have been nicer and the servers--especially Steff--were always on hand to answer a question, anticipate a need, or provide us with a meal.

Unfortunately, their professionalism cannot make up for the tremendous lack of cleanliness nor the quality of the food served. I understand that The Elms is an old manor house, which is one of the reasons we chose it. However, as we sat in the cafe the first afternoon we arrived, all around us were dirty dishes, dried food, the strong smell of ketchup, all piled up on the tables from hours earlier. No one felt the need to come and clean the tables. The staff were constantly racing around but never thought to bring a dirty dish back with them on their return to the kitchen.

As I looked around the room and for the next three days, I saw how completely untidy and in places disgusting the room was. The cleaning staff didn't even vacuum prior to our arrival as there was dirty all over. Behind the pillows on the chairs were items left from the previous guests. Dirt, finger prints, and other indecipherable items were left all over the walls, on the light switch covers, on the tables of both rooms. The bathroom had weeks of un-mopped dirt in the corners. It's as if the cleaning staff could care less. This was not confined to just our hotel rooms. The dining room had dried food spills all over the windowsills and spills left over the from the previous day. And the smell when first walking into the dining area was appalling (I beg you not to try to cover it up with air freshener which will only make it worse!) I stopped looking as all I saw everywhere was the need for a good scrubbing! I didn't want to think of how dirty the kitchen must be if the 'public' areas were this bad.

We took all of our meals at the hotel. The food was bland, poorly prepared, and unimaginative. It got so that the children begged for us not to eat another meal there as nothing they tried tasted good. I couldn't imagine how sad someone would be if they came here for a "spa" meal.

The staff can try their hardest, but until you fix the cleaning situation and the kitchen situation, I fear that experiences like mine will only prevent you from being the type of Inn you advertise yourself to be.

I recognize that The Elms focuses on being family friendly and that allowing children more freedom results in more fingerprints. But, more children doesn't mean the hotel can present itself as a dump. A place can be old and charming as long as someone pays attention to the details of maintaining it. But old and smelly and dirty just doesn't work. A little attention to the areas where families gather is much in need.

Having children of 2 & 3 we were looking for a bit of luxury and to be able to unwind to celebrate my better halves 40th birthday, we found The Elms on trip advisor, we were drawn like most people to read the odd “terrible” review which it had and we were a little worried about if we should take the plunge.
Well we had nothing to worry about, from the moment we drove up the long drive and walking through the door we knew that we were going to have a brilliant relaxing weekend and that’s exactly what happened.
The service was first class, every member of staff did a great job to ensure our needs were catered for, the food was absolutely wonderful and some of the best we have had, the pool, spa, garden cafe, crèche, lounge, bar, reception areas were all wonderful places to spend time relaxing in.
It’s the little things that count sometimes, the quirky little things, like a football goal & balls on the front lawn which me and my 3 year old son spent plenty of time there, it has a superb outdoor play area hidden at the bottom of the rear garden, despite the temperature we spent hours there!
We checked in on a cold Sunday evening in February in school term time and there were only maybe another two families with us the entire weekend, it was like we had the place to ourselves, Loved it, two great peaceful evening meals (our first since they were born), I doubt it would be exactly the same relaxing time in the heights of summer when maybe all the rooms are full of families and maybe loads of people everywhere but its horses for courses I suppose.
I really can’t praise The Elms & the staff high enough and we will definitely be returning for another winter break.
