My partner and I came here based on Trip Advisor recommendations, and were not disappointed. On a grey, drizzly Sunday afternoon in October we were welcomed with tea and cakes and a blazing log fire, which set us up for a gentle walk along the stream, and past the church to the lake, where we watched fish rising to catch the late afternoon flies, and admired the idyllic Autumn colours.
Our room was the very secluded Room 9, at the top of the house: super bed and linen, White Company bathroom supplies, fresh fruit, good biscuits, excellent tea and coffee, and our own cafetiere.
For dinner we went for the tasting menu: it was £60 each, but worth it- seven exciting and interesting juxtapositions and surprises, from scallop and black pudding, then light-as-air cheese fritters with fennel and pomegranate, to perfect fish, perfect game, and finally a delicate berry souffle with ice-cream mousse. For those not wanting a full bottle (or second full bottle) of wine, the excellent list also offers a carafe of 50cl of a number of wines.
The service was good: all the staff were attentive but unobtrusive; friendly but not obsequious.
Overall- a memorable experience in every way.

Our American cousin declared it “the most charming spot “she had ever seen. and it’s hard to disagree. A slender spire rises above lichen covered gravestones and the church is full of history, stained glass and some oddities. A polite stream takes you back to the hotel’s glorious garden and pond, where you can sit on the terrace and feast on fine food. The restaurant is very good and gives even the cooked breakfast an original touch. The house itself is prettier than some of the photos show but if you have mobility problems do check when you book so that you avoid the steep stairs and get a room with a suitable shower.
We were rather put out that the rooms were not ready when we arrived and lacked the wow factor which characterised every other aspect of the hotel - but I loved the view from my window and the old stone walls which kept phone reception at bay.
Staff were faultless and friendly, even the hardworking waitress who kept smiling when we asked for food after the kitchen closed, and Simon who told us about the Fovant Badges. (Although I misheard and was expecting animals and a sett
There are plenty of things to see nearby - but you could happily go no further and feel you had already found the cream of Wiltshire dining and countryside.

The hotel really is as pretty as it looks in the photo's and the little hamlet is beautiful. We stayed in Room 1 which was spacious and had a wonderful view over the garden and the field beyond. It does get hot in the room though as there is only one small window that opens (and then only a little way), but this is part and parcel of the original old stone windows and replacing them would be criminal! The bed was fabulously comfortable. It's a shame that the rest of the furniture in the room was mismatched (but not in a good way - it was a old, cheap and mismatched rather than eclectic antique!). However, that's me being very picky - the room's view more than made up for the overall tired appearance of the room. It is worth mentioning though that this isn't a cheap place to stay, and with the price tag comes a certain expectation of finish.

The food in the restaurant was fantastic. It's genuinely as good as you get anywhere, simply amazing. A wonderful chef. Our only issue was service related - we were disappointed that one of the meals that we'd requested to not have certain ingredients included, came with it anyway. This resulted in the waitress being a bit grumpy when we asked for it to be sent back (her comment was that as it was "only a bit" she thought it would be ok!!). I was surprised to have to ask her to take my meal away whilst the other was being re-made, and they really did just keep it under the hot plate. A shame that the service wasn't as good as the food, but the food really was great.

I was also disappointed that no effort was made at all to acknowledge that it was my partners birthday (despite them being informed repeatedly!). I didn't expect much, just a little candle in his desert. However this wasn't forthcoming and I had to ask the waitress to do this for me after he'd eaten his desert! However, when I made the request she was happy to help.

On a final niggle, and unfortunately our last impression of the hotel…. the service at breakfast was the worst we've ever experienced, anywhere, ever! We waited ages to order, then ages for our food. In fact we watched another table that arrived and ordered after us finish their breakfasts before ours came out! I was also advised that they'd "just" run out of soya milk - 6 days ago!

These niggles are purely customer service related, only small in the scheme of things and shouldn't put you off staying here as the raw materials at Howards House are all there - beautiful hotel, idyllic setting and a top notch chef. If they just pay a little more attention to the customer service details it will be perfect. We definitely recommend giving them a go. It's highly unlikely you'll be disappointed.

Room Tip: Room 1 has wonderful views over the garden to the field (with cows) beyond.

Dear KirstyandTom,

Thank you very much for your kind review of August 2012. We really appreciate your thoughts and feedback.

It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us and particularly the location and food.

We completely agree that the furnishings in place during your stay were very much in need of replacement - unfortunately your visit happened to be just before we underwent an extensive refurbishment of all the bedrooms and bathrooms - which we now feel represent a considerably higher standard.

We are also sorry to hear that you were not entirely satisfied with the service you received - it is our wish to provide all our guests with the highest standards of service, care and hospitality, so it is a sadness to hear that this was not your experience. The waitress to whom I believe you refer is no longer working with us - our current front of house team is a very cohesive, dedicated and happy unit, and I very much hope that were you to visit us again your experience would be a more wholly positive one.

Your feedback has been very helpful so thank you once again for taking the time to share it.

Best wishes,
Charlotte Greenwood

Stayed for 2 nights in early June, 2012. We stayed here about 15 years ago, and it is still pretty good. It is really more a great restaurant with rooms. The rooms are quite nice, but are getting a bit tired and "long in the tooth". Needs some updating, but is still quite comfortable.
The restauarant is still first rate, and while not cheap, is a pretty good value for what it delivers.
Very good service in the hotel and the restaurant. Worth a stay if you want a quiet, relaxing place in the country for a bit.

Dear Racer 356,

Many thanks for your kind review of last year. It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and in particular the food.

In response to your thoughts that our rooms were getting somewhat tired, we are in complete agreement with this, and you may be interested to know that this winter we have refurbished all of our bedrooms and bathrooms, and feel happy to say that we feel they now reflect a significantly higher standard.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your views, your feedback is much appreciated. We hope to welcome you again!

We have had the pleasure of staying at Howard's House a number of times. We have always received a warm and very personal welcome. The old house, with its creaky floors, but modernised bedrooms, gives a wonderful feeling of total comfort and relaxation, a world apart from the hustle and noise of every day life.

The Dinner menu and quality of food is a gastronomic experience so worth looking forward to after an afternoon of walking or fishing in the beautiful and peaceful Nadder valley.

A visit to this Hotel will stay in the memory and will certainly lead to future visits either to stay or to enjoy a special meal.

We stayed here for one night whilst we explored some sights around Wiltshire - the setting is idyllic. We're extremely fussy travellers when it comes to cleanliness, comfort and service. The hotel was clean, charming and our double room was spacious with a good size bathroom (room 6). The only area that made us question the five star price was the quality of the bed. It wasn't very supportive and the mattress felt quite old. When you're paying this kind of price you do expect a good quality bed for a restful nights sleep. The service, however, was exceptional and dinner was of a high standard. We would defninitely recommend a short stay here for the wonderful location.

Dear MelanieDN,

Thank you for your kind review of last year - we're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay.

In the period since your visit we have invested quite substantially into refurbishing all our bedrooms and bathrooms, and are pleased to say that we feel they are now of a higher standard. I am sorry to hear that your bed was not comfortable - our older mattresses have now been replaced by very nice new ones, and in fact we recently had an email from a guest who had enjoyed the best night's sleep she'd ever had thanks to our new bed in Room 1!

Thank you very much for your feedback. We hope to see you again soon.

Best wishes,

My wife and I stayed here earlier in the year. Our only disappointment was that we had to leave after 2 nights there. The setting in a small Wiltshire hamlet (too small to be considered a village) is picture postcard perfect. The food was as good as any top notch (and more expensive) London restaurant. For a romantic setting this place is hard to beat.
