“One of the best B+Bs on our NZ holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2012

My wife and I stayed at Split Apple lodge for 2 nights in early April. We had driven in from Blenheim and arrived fairly late in the day as dusk approached.

We were met at the front door by our hosts - who were super-friendly and helped us carry our bags into our room, and told us we were probably a bit late for dinner in Kaiteriteri. They offered to call some restaurants for us to see if they would cater for us at the late hour, but it wasn't required. Great service though.

Our room was lovely - high ceilings, comfortable bed, a portion of decking outside (great views of the sunrise the following morning) and a pleasant if unspectacular bathroom. All in all pretty comfortable. I would agree with one reviewer here that there isnt much space to hang clothes (just a small rail) - but this sufficed for us, so wasn't an issue. It wasn't the biggest room we stayed in, but then again, it wasn't the smallest either. It felt roomy enough for our purposes.

The Lodge itself has a very new and clean feel to it. There is a very large communal area with a wood burning stove, large plasma TV and a DVD collection and an enormous kitchen which I believe you are free to use for your own purposes. I don't think there is much lacking for the price you pay. There is also an enormous terrace out the front of the lodge which we could only imagine would be perfect to chill out on in warmer weather!

The location is a bit strange - as in it is labelled as Kaiteriteri, but it is a significant hair-pin-laden drive up from Kaiteri to the lodge - probably a good 15 minute drive (and of course, this means driving to dinner in the evenings - no wine!). Having said that, you are truly secluded up on top of the hill so it is extraordinarily peaceful and the views of both sunrise and sunset as well as the star-spangled sky are stunning.

I think what sets this B+B apart for me is the service from the hosts. In depth discussions on local restaurants, free nibbles as we drank a few glasses of wine watching the sun go down on the second evening, free advice about the best bits of the Abel Tasman park - all in all I thought the service was truly outstanding and worthy of any 4* or 5* hotel.

Let's be clear about this - this is an extremely well run, immaculate Lodge in true wilderness and tranquility and even if the location is a little out of the way, it certainly ranks up there with the best places we stayed in NZ South Island.

We would most definitely return.

I have no hesitation in recommending this lovely, restful place.

We spent 4 nights here, and initially had the place to ourselves, so they generously moved us over to the sea view side, although either would have been pleasant. I would describe the place as luxurious but that makes it sound OTT, whereas in fact the design was quite spare and modern, with accessibility thoughtfully built in. High quality and all still very new.

The lounge is large; you might expect two mounted heads on the wall to overwhelm a room, but not in this case! There was a good selection of DVDs; unfortunately I was sick one day, and got to enjoy an NZ film I wouldn't otherwise have watched. Breakfast was delicious (I've forgotten the details but there were several options including croissant). The lounge included a guest kitchen. There is a washing machine and drier in the basement. We enjoyed the large deck, but the weather was mostly not quite warm enough to sit out yet.

Our hosts gave good advice on how to get into the park and what to do on the grey days. The sunny day we took one of the many combo tours: water taxi, plus kayak, plus walk, plus water taxi. Solitude was of course not on the cards, but I really enjoyed the path and views anyway.

My only word of warning - which relates to any property in the area - is that the roads are very slow and winding. I suffer from travel sickness, and had doubts as we arrived the first day. I did get used to the local road (you have to go a short way one way or the other for dinner). But the day we took the road over Takaka Hill to Golden Bay and back, I shook my inner ear up so badly I still felt ill the next day, which has never happened to me before. Take your time on the roads! Oh, and if you read this far because you are also motion sick, I discovered that sea kayaking, even on an beautiful, calm day was too challenging for me to enjoy - such a shame as the views were great.

Bert and Paulette were just outstanding hosts in our stay in Split Apple. We were at home away from home, they did everything possible to make our stay as pleasant as could be. The views from there is just stunning, the best in the whole of Split Apple. A must when thinking of that area.

Room Tip: The eastern rooms to see the most amazing sun and moon risses ever and the best site over the lake.

This bed and breakfast is gorgeous! Not someone's house that accommodates extra people, this place was obviously built as a bed and breakfast, and therefore is much more spacious and comfortable than most. The whole place is spotlessly clean and tastefully appointed. The breakfasts are wonderful (if you're lucky Bert will have been out fishing and will provide you with a rare whitebait omelette!). Bert and Paulette are warm and very hospitable, clearly enjoying sharing their wonderful space with visitors. They are very knowledgeable about the area and will help you set up whatever kind of adventure or relaxation you're looking for. The lodge is close to Abel Tasman park for hiking, and even closer to the beach for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Possibly the best thing is relaxing at the lodge, enjoying the quiet, as well as the beautiful views during the day and the extraordinary stargazing at night. This place is definitely a cut above the rest!

Room Tip: Although the seaside rooms do have a beautiful view, there is a huge deck and common area from which...

Hosts Bert and Paulette gave us a wonderfully warm welcome and all the advice and help we needed to make our stay near Abel Tasman a memorable experience. Rooms at the front have a sea view and are worth the extra, with a balcony to sit out on and enjoy the view. The lodge is halfway between Marahau and Kaiteriteri so you can choose which to go to for an evening meal. Either way the road is interestingly narrow and winding. The adjacent Split Apple Rock beach is an incredible place to visit and the lodge has everything to make your stay enjoyable.

We spent three nights at Split Apple Lodge and were very impressed with the building, location and breakfasts. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean with great views. One problem - there was no wardrobe or indeed any kind of storage space for clothes apart from a wooden rail measuring approx 30cms sticking out from the wall with four small holes for coat hangers! Living out of a suitcase is not ideal for long haul travellers such as ourselves.
We were very surprised that our room was not serviced (what we would expect from a B & B, as we were not self-catering) and this was not explained to us on our arrival.

Thanks for the feedback. Since your stay we have purchased 2 tables with drawers for 2 rooms and are looking at a duchess for a third. We have tried not to compromise the spacious feel of the rooms by cluttering them, but we realize quests sometimes like to unpack and have a place to put their clothes.
In regard to room service, we do provide cards in each room to be hung on the outside door if required. As a rule we don't go into guest's rooms unless asked, but in future we will make sure to tell guests the cards are there. Also we endevor to tell guests on arrival that they need only to knock on our door for any enquiries or requests.
We are relatively new to running a B&B and welcolm any comments.
