“Beautiful, Holy spot”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

I was dazzled by the church at Mariastein. The main cathedral is wonderful, with an amazing organ and beautiful iconography. Be sure not to miss the original chapel, which is located down the ramps outside of the main sanctuary. The passage is lined with tablets thanking Mary for miracles. If you enjoy religious artifacts, you will love the gift shop. I collect nativity scenes, and the selection was enormous. They also had a whole wall full of lovely and unusual crosses. Well worth the trip!

“Kloster Mariastein Touches the Soul”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

Spend an hour or two in the upper church and the various grottoes and chapels of Mariastein and you will surely be inspired by the devotion people have shown to the Virgin Mary. We stopped by Mariastein recently (our second visit there) while on a tour of nearby towns in Alsace and before heading back to Basel. The church and the various devotional chapels are truly uplifting. Set on the side of a mountain with fantastic views of the nearby woods and hills, Kloster Mariastein will surely touch your soul.

Of special interest are the many letters and statements of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary written in almost all of the major languages of the world. These signs decorate the interior walls of the chapels and passageways to the lower grottoes. We noticed that the number of signs had grown tremendously in the five years since our first visit. Our Blessed Mother must still be very busy, even in our largely secularized world.
