My husband and I stayed here for two nights in February half term inspired by the Rob Brydon / Steve Coogan program "The Trip". If you like food and light comedy, I highly recommend watching the series. Coming from the South East it was a long way to come but very very worth it.

Location: Just beautiful. It's the only building for miles, in some stunning countryside. Very well signposed from the main roads and easy to find. We went for a short walk over the stepping stones one day and a longer walk across fields etc the second day. Lovely views all around, just idylic.

Room: Love the fact that you can view all the rooms online in advance and pick one. We were in Room 5 with stunning views, fireplace, huge traditionally styled room, massive and very comfortable bed & a large modern bathroom. The only downside was that there were a lot of rooms past ours on the same corridor so we had quite a few people walking past and the sound travels so we felt we could be overheard. Next time we'd ask for a room at the end of a corridor.

Food: Amazing. We are fortunate to eat at some very good places (some girls collect Mulberry bags & Jimmy Choos - I collect Michelin stars!) and this exceeded our expectations. Bar food is excellent and fairly priced (we are used to London prices, however). Restaurant food even better. We had the most gorgeous chauteaubriand with game chips etc. Huge portions and the most declicious beef I've had in ages. Breakfast equally good. You HAVE to try the Ann Foreshaw yoghurt - I'm addicted and trying to find out where to source it down South. Full English also very good.

Service: Throughout our stay the service was professional and friendly.

Overall: I'd love to return. The whole place is so relaxing. It's unpretentious (lots of walkers & dogs and muddy wellies), cosy and comfortable but with very high quality rooms, food and good service, in the middle of beautiful countryside. What's not to love?! I just wish it was closer to home so we could go back more often.

Service: Throughout our stay

and anyone else, too - if you can manage without air-conditioning and can cope without being near a shopping mall and feel like a taste of the Best of Idiosyncratic Britain, then I insist that you make a detour to this hostelry. It lies in one of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of the country half way between the English and Scottish capitals. Family-owned for decades, it is furnished with a random but interesting collection of pieces including a quirky selection of elaborate Victorian and Edwardian baths. The place is definitely stylish - it shelters under the 'shabby/chic' umbrella. Many rooms have working fireplaces. We called the hotel with our ETA and the peat fire in our room was burning merrily on arrival. There are books everywhere, Wifi is free (how dare hotels in the U.S. charge for that?), mobile reception is patchy - this place is remote. Few cars pass and it is heaven to experience deep quiet at night. Service is a delight - the warmth and natural friendliness of the staff are in marked contrast to the hotel-school taught cool efficiency. The food is excellent and sourced locally and reception is housed in a cramped corner of what appears to be, and is, a vintners. You are unlikely to have stayed anywhere like this before. I cannot commend it enough for its originality and charm. The bed was comfortable, linen was good, towels plentiful, Molton Brown 'products', but you must be prepared for worn carpets, scuffed skirting boards, creaking floors. Higgledy piggledy it may well be but the Inn at Whitewell, if you have a soul, will give you untold pleasure.

3rd visit, we're about 60 miles away & stopped over for wedding anniversary. Peat fire, huge comfy bed. Fab restaurant food, etc etc.... other reviewers have said it all.

Not cheap but staff attitude & quality shines through ........ having said that the bar food is fab too, so if passing call in & treat yourself.

A word about the local roads ... LCC must have lost the repairs file, broken up surfaces and potholes gallore (end Feb 2013), managed to break a spring on return journey .....

Room Tip: Look on the website and pick one !

This place leaves me speechless!
I can still remember the first time we walked in and saw a couple relaxing by the fire with their dog! Yep, that was absolutely the moment I fell in love with this beautiful little place!
We had our wedding here in December and it was breath taking! The staff, Emma (their fab!!!!! Wedding coordinator)'s attention to detail, the charm and character of the place and the happy, warm atmosphere! We stayed for two nights and it really is my favourite place to visit! You rarely find a place where the staff are all so friendly and warm! The food also
Is amazing! Our expectations were so so high and it truly was faultless!! My father literally spent the night showing the evening guests around we were just so in love with the decor and admiring each others bedrooms :)
Anyone debating whether to hold their wedding here absolutely do it! It really is out of this world! Everyone i have mentioned it to has cooed over the place and everybody at the wedding is still raving about it now!
Really glad I have a fab new excuse to visit every year for our wedding anniversary and dying to try out the piggeries!
Well done and Thank you Inn at Whitewell!!!! We absolutely love it here!!! There is no better place to wake up !!!

A great place to stay and to eat. The location is stunning. The rooms are slightly dear, but are very comfortable. The breakfast is one of the best I've had.

When it comes to eating, there's two choices: the more formal dining room (where breakfast is also served) or the bar area which covers several rooms and most of the ground floor. The menu in the restaurant and bar is different, but both are excellent. The main courses in the restaurant are usually over £20, whereas in the bar they hover around the £15 mark.

On a quiet-ish snowy Saturday last year, we were able to pick from both menus in the bar, but that choice wasn't available last time we visited as it was so busy.

Most people prefer the bar area in view of its atmosphere, but it fills up quickly and it's not possible to book tables. When we were last there we had a drink after an afternoon walk and left the bar at about 6.30 to get changed. A few tables were occupied, but when we came down at 7.15 it was full, save for two tables.

Despite being so busy, the service was excellent.

Room Tip: Room 10 on the top floor is larger than others in the same price range. Rooms overlooking the river...

I visited for lunch on Saturday,02/03/13. We were greeted with a warm welcome from a very friendly waitress who showed us to a lovely table at a window overlooking the river.
We chose the shoulder of lamb which was the best I've ever had..
We hope to return soon with a possible overnight stay.looking forward to it!

Beautiful setting but the food is overated. The starters of Duck Leg and the homemade Blackpudding were both pretty bland and far less interesting than their descriptions. The potted Crab was ok though.
The Mains looked the part but really its pub grub.
The problem with the Inn is that it's not really sure what its trying to be. In the "Restaurant" there are white tablecoths with paper napkins?and you have to order your own drinks at the bar? After ordering food and requesting it, we finally got a wine list, no-one came back to take the order though! I then got the attention of a waitress, I was unsure so asked if I had to order it at the bar which she replied "No, I can do that for you". She then returned with the open bottle of wine (it should be opened at the table) and four glasses and plonked it on the table without any communication or pouring action!
The mains came out and we felt we needed to order sides, why doesn't waitress offer you sides when taking the order?
We didn't have Sweet but the coffee was average.

Won't be making the effort to visit again, it's just a pub thats not sure if it wants to be a restaurant, but charges restaurant prices!

Thank you for the review, I know what you mean about mixed messages over lunch service but it it is intentional, we become more formal at night, although the bar continues with suppers. Hope that helps. Regards Cb
