Although the Franken area of Bavaria is noted for its wines, it also boasts a very high concentration of breweries. Brauerei Gasthof Werneck is a great example. We spent three nights here while visiting with our son who is serving with the US Army and stationed in nearby Schweinfurt. Werneck offered the slower pace of a small town with ready access to the Autobahn for our travels. The gasthof is in the style of an Inn co-located with the brewery and restaurant. Innkeeper Michael Schmidt made us feel right at home and we took a number of very traditional meals and quite a few beers in the biergarten. Our clean, modern double room came with a private shower and included breakfast. We were able to tour the brewery and the grounds of a Baroque castle just a few blocks away. Michael also graciously showed us the three horses he keeps in a stable on the grounds. He recommended that we visit the Homburg ruins about a half hour away, and even in the rain, it was a wotrthwhile trip.
