It seemed like a good idea. Stay on the outskirts of Frankfurt at a reasonably priced hotel on the rail system. Then
when the time came to go to the airport there would be easy transit. Plus when we wanted to take in the Frankfurt
scene we could hop on a train easily. So we chose the Hotel Riedstern in Riedstadt Germany.
We arrived for a couple of days in early March 2007 via train dragging the bag from the train into the station. Since
the hotel advertised being 500 meters from the train we decided to walk. There was a sign indicating the direction of
the hotel so we started off to the north, then west under the tracks and without signs kept walking. Finally a sign
indicated south, after 100 meters a sign said east, 300 meters a sign indicating south again. This is when we saw the
station across the tracks directly from the hotel after 45 minutes of walking. A taxi would have been further as it
could not have gone through the pedestrian tunnel under the tracks.
The hotel is located in an industrial park and seemed to be a cross between an apartment building and a hotel. We
checked in and thankfully went to our room. The double room we reserved appeared to be very small with two twin
beds and a tiny bathroom with only a shower. The shower was a meter square and had a plastic curtain and, we
found later, a shower head that would not stay directed but always fell down under its own weight. The ceiling light
was a chandalier with 15-20 bulbs and definitely filled the room with eye zapping brilliance. There was a desk and
chair with limited work room. No safe in the room. Duvets were lightweight but the room and linens were clean and
did not seem worn or frayed. Wireless connection was available and provided good bandwidth.
Breakfast was very adequate and complete with hot and cold entres, juices, cereals, and breads, cheeses and meats.
The service was prompt and friendly.
The hotel seemed to be a businessman’s hotel probably because it is convenient to be reached by car and is priced
competitively. There was a lack of off street parking and cars were lined up on both sides of the streets outside
every night. When we left early in the morning the office was locked, we left our key on the counter and the door
locked behind us as we headed to the train for the airport.
