Grand Hotel Heiligendamm
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 7, 2013

A beautiful grand hotel which exceeded our expectations for its grandeur, beauty and setting. You are transported back in time so if you stay more than a day I suggest reading the Buddenbrook, it is the perfect setting to do it, sitting on a Strandkorb!

We were upgraded and had a beautiful appointed room in the 'Castle', which actually is a real castle! Room was spotlessly clean, and was kept such throughout our stay. huge bathroom, they brough wifi router to room so we could navigate for free.

As it is a spread out hotel you need the key to enter and exit the buildings for security reasons. The area is amazing, it is a secluded area but very close to beautiful Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn, you can reach them both by historic Molli train which stops just outside of the hotel, only up to 7,30 p.m.

Valet parking is at € 25 per day, self parking at 12, I bit to expensive but there is little parking in the area to be found.

Service was impeccable at reception and Nelson bar, whereas breakfast needs improvement.

The young hostess at breakfast reception didn't speak any English, you do not really know if you can just walk in, as many did, or wait to be seated in the beautiful breakfast room. Staff works hard but it seems there is no cohesion: a lot of running around but not up to par. One morning they forget coffee, the next a teaspoon is missing, eggs benedict to order were hard boiled and cold.

It is a magic place though, a good base to visit many beautiful towns like Rostock and Wismar or to enjoy relaxing and reading.

One of the most beautiful real Grand Hotel we've stayed at.

Room Tip: Silence is deafening so I believe there are no problems wherever you sleep. The rooms in the castle...

We stayed three days, two nights with friends at the GHHD / the 5star property is like a white city directly on the Ostsee shore. Everything is grand / from arrival to departure. Swift valet parking, very friendly efficient check-in with introduction to the room and all facilities. We enjoyed the spacious resort style park, the walks on the beach and the great breakfast buffet. Breakfast is either made to order (very yummy Eggs Benedicte) or you choose from a sumptious buffet!

The SPA is large, spotless clean and was eventho it was a public holiday weekend always empty. Nice pool with a large hot tub next to it.

Overall great vacation, just pricy due to holiday weekend, but hey, sometimes you must spoil yourself!

Room Tip: Nice rooms at the Burg Hohenzollern / make sure you get seaviews

If you want to escape Berlin for a few days this is a very good choice: a beautiful and quiet place by the Baltic Sea with 4 very good restaurants, a large spa and pool. The GM Mr. König does a great job and the service is very friendly and efficient. Book one of the beach suites in Haus Mecklenburg with wonderful views of the Baltic Sea!

The last time I was here it was during winter several years ago and the hotel was still part of the Kempinski group. This visit is in Spring, sunny, warm, and the hotel has lost none of its charm. The rooms still spacious and has my favorite mattress (firm), the breakfast is still one of the best in Europe, dinner at Friedrich Franz is superb and intimate, the spa is big and when we were there we were the only patrons. The walk along the beach is very relaxing. I don't mind driving 3 hours from Berlin to get to this place. A private group is trying to revitalize the properties facing the Baltic Sea and by the time they are finished (whenever it might be), the whole entire stretch of the beachfront area will look absolutely breathtaking

A relaxing family weekend, early in spring, the sun invited us to take walks along the beach, so we dragged ourselves away from the great spa area. Very comfortable rooms, great beds, excellent breakfast buffet. It is very apparent that small childre are more than welcome - a play-house with three stories and professional babysitters/nannies is on site. Dogs apparently also welcome. Good informal dinner in the bar, we skipped the gourmet restaurant. Staff genuinely friendly and attentive, locally sourced eco-food.
Room service sneaks into the room several times a day to change towels etc., which is maybe a bit much.
Overall, in case you really have too much money and do not mind spending it on luxury, this is the place for a very nice weekend.

This is the place where Angela Merckel hosted the G8 in 2007. You will easily understand why: it is a place with grandeur. Beautiful location, beautiful buildings. It was initially run by the Kempniski group, but they apparently struggled to operate it profitably. I was told that it is currently "in administration" (chapter 11), but this is not noticeable for guests.
Large rooms, excellent food & service, good meeting facilities. I was told the Spa is also wonderful. Of course, it has a rather isolated location. But this may be a plus for your "off-site" business meeting or for your family weekend. I intend to return with my family one day.

Charming and beautiful property, though a decreased variation of its former self. Main Restaurant was ok though found the servers a touch pretentious , especially for a family man like myself.

Rooms were spacious , though again the amenities seemed a touch better in the past.

Loved the sushi & the lovely pier.
