Grand Hotel Heiligendamm
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 18, 2012

We spend a short weekend with the kids in mid June. Our plan for the visit to Grand Hotel Heiligendamm was to relax, go to the swimming pool, walk along the beach having an ice cream etc and the hotel and surrounds were more than able to provide for that. The swimming pool area is not the best we have seen but the kids were happy. We appreciate that the hotel has made certain hours avaliable for kids at eg. the swimming pool - sometimes staying with (loud) kids at high end hotel can be a bit of a nuisance for other guests (and not to forget the parents), but with dedicated hours we did not feel so guilty about our kids being too loud etc. Furthermore, as a special service to families the hotel has a whole house dedicated to kids (with Wild West or Star War themes) which is staffed with personel looking after the kids.
Apart from being charged an extra EUR 50 per night for an extra bed in the room (which came as a bit of a surprise to me) we have no negative comments. The view of the Baltic Sea is fantastic and the real draw here. With all the activities going on at the hotel it offers relaxation for the whole family. I think we will be coming back later this year.

Stayed here for a weekend in March. Very attentive, friendly staff and accordingly service is great. The location right at the Baltic sea is amazing - just be aware that there is nothing else here, other than the hotel (and probably a fair amount of tourists in the summer).
Restaurant in the Nelson's Bar was very good, same for the Kurhaus - even though the American readers should be warned that the 4-course dinner may take a couple of hours (so plan accordingly).

The Grand Hotel Heiligendamm is a prime 5-Star location to spend a relaxing and luxurious retreat at (East) Germany's Baltic Sea Coastline. It is located only a 2 1/2 hours drive northwest of Berlin. Loads of fresh air, direct beach access and privacy along with a superb Spa-Area make your stay a great experience. The Spa-Treatments (massage and beauty) are carried out by most competent and super friendly therapists. The rooms are in a remarkable excellent condition, same as the complete Hotel. Don't miss the marvellous breakfast buffet and à-la carte breakfast - it is simply great.

Room Tip: Any of the choices are good. Check out special package rates.

This is the first time I have written a review for Trip Advisor. I do so not to complain but rather because I do not want any other couples to make the same mistake as we did and believe that they will go to the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm for rest & relaxation.

I like children - especially when they are well brought up....but here, the only place we had a break from screaming kids was in our hotel room (which was small and rather shabby, despite the fact that we were "upgraded") or on the beach (it was the middle of winter, so the kids' screams were drowned out by the pounding waves & wind).

The hotel says that only at certain times are kids allowed in the swimming pool/jacuzzi. In practice, they do not enforce this, so it's impossible to swim without being cut across or jumped upon. The hotel also says that children under 16 are not allowed in the sauna area. In practice, we saw children in there most days. When we asked the staff about this they replied "if the parents will not control them, then how can we be expected to?"

In the breakfast room, children did not sit at the tables eating but ran around like crazy, playing with toys etc. The only evening restaurants which were peaceful were the gourmet & the sushi, where the service (in contrast to the other places) was excellent; the food was also great. We were disappointed by the other restaurants and the service in the bar was pretty awful...

I wish Heiligendamm would be honest and make it clear that this is a family hotel. Then we would have booked somewhere else and everyone would have been happier :-)

Room Tip: Seaview is amazing

We stayed here 3 nights in July.
We were given a spacious beautiful room with a huge balcony and partial sea view.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Food and service in both the Italian and gourmet restaurant was excellent. Good selection of reasonably priced wines.
We were lucky with the weather, having two sunny days in a row, and the breakfast served on the terrace, overlooking the Baltic Sea, was unforgettable.

Nice Spa with big indoor swimming pool. (With a schedule for parents with small kids)
The hotel rents out bicycles and there are some nice trails along the shoreline.
The accommodation does not come cheap but is worthed every penny.

my wife and I went for a romantic week-end without kids and were not disappointed. From check-in till departure, we only experienced excellent service at the front desk, the restaurants, the spa and room service. Our room (a suite towards the sea) was spacious and immaculate and met our expectations. Despite there being quite a few families - and we had left our kids at home - we never felt disturbed in any way by children. We used the conscierge (pre-trip for arranging dinner reservations, flowers and champagne in the room and during our trip for advice on excursions) and were utterly satisfied. The Freidrich Franz restaurant was an excellent experience and uniquely small for a michelin starred establishment with great and flexible staff. My wife had certain dietary needs that were catered well for even though it is a set menu.

Overall, an experience ranking in our personal top 3 and making more of a lasting impression than e.g. Maradiva at mauritius, Datai in Malaysia, Burj al Arab etc.

Stayed in Winter at the Grand Hotel. It was my second stay there, unfortunately during a renovation period of the SPA (which was overdue). During the weekend, and I assume due to Winter holidays many families with kids choose the hotel to stay there. The Pool was crowded with kids screaming and running around. As much as I know there is no Family section available. The room was decent, the bathroom spacious. The linen and quality of bath products is very good. The bed was only a Queen for two people which made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Nobody reconfirmed this upon arrival. The hotel itself is owned by a German investment group - and unfortunately their seems not to be enough money to maintain the hotel well. Only if things are already collapsing, like the finery of the facade, the engineering seems to receive funds. Not good for a hotel with this class. The personnel is great, friendly and really professional. I want to highlight the Breakfast waiters who are running very fast in order to exceed guests satisfaction. No matter if they are German or foreigner.
