There is little to be said that hasn't already been said by other reviewers. This is just a lovely cottage (far bigger than it would seem from the outside) in a great setting and with friendly neighbours. It was nice to leave the car behind and combine travelling on the steam railway with some perfect local walks. The rail trail is well worth doing, and there are two very good pubs (at Grosmont and Beck Hole) within walking distance

Watching the steam train powering up the line is spectacular. It is the main highlight for most guests but there are many other special things about this idyllic location.

“Peaceful hidden valley”
Reviewed June 26, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

Such a quiet and peaceful stay in this lovely cottage. With the best of both worlds, steam trains for my husband and lovely garden for myself to enjoy. Walks from the doorstep and only 15 minutes walk to Grosmont station and a train trip to Whitby or Pickering in the other direction. Pauline and Peter could not have been more helpful with a very late booking. Really amazing week and two refreshed people. Hope to be back soon.

“A hidden gem”

If you are looking for peace and quiet, beautiful country walks and steam trains, this is a must. The road leading to Mallard Cottage had us wondering what we had got ourselves in for but the week couldn't have been better. We had a great base for exploring the settings for Heartbeat, country drives and a short walk to Grosmont railway station where we caught the train to Whitby (worth a day out). The train buff could catch the steam trains to other locations on the North York Moors.
The cottage is steeped in history and was very comfortable. Being able to look out the window and see the passing trains and cows and rabbits in the neighbouring field was an added touch.
The summer house and comfortable chairs enabled us to spend enjoyable times relaxing in the garden listening to the bleating of the sheep and birds twittering in the trees.
Our week was capped off with a beautiful dinner on the Pullman Dining train run by North York Railways. We spent 3 wonderful hours aboard this plush train from yesteryear being pulled by a majestic steam train along the winding railway to Pickering and back.

A real treasure of a hide away. Too much to do in the area to take advantage of the lovely facilities here at Mallard, unless you stay for at least 2 weeks. It's bigger than it looks in the photographs, so there is no shortage of space. It felt so homely to come back to relax in after a tiring day out. Struggling to think of anything that we might have needed that wasn't provided. Communication with the owners very good and helpful. Only improvement we can come up with is some of the kitchen ware probably due for replacement, but only because other users haven't taken care of it. Definitely on our list of re-visits.

The road to Mallard Cottage is a normal small country lane for the area.As the guest said it is very worthwhile when you get there.
