Wanting to get away from the heat of pre-monsoon Goa, we headed to the hills. We tripped over 'Silver Brooks' in our search for places to stay in Madikeri and we liked what we read on their website. We decided to check it out for a night or two. We stayed for five!

As it was just the two of us, Yogesh suggested we stay at their second property, Rare Earth Estates. The directions and subsequent help from Google Maps got us on the right track and we arrived post lunch in Madikeri town. Based on our stay, here is our feedback.

Simply put, Rare Earth Estates is a treasure. The location, the serenity, cleanliness of the home and kitchen, the gentle people and the delicious food, all deserve 5 stars. The fact that our Vodafone mobile numbers didn't work was an added bonus.

Our bedroom was splendid with a four poster, a huge marble bathroom and our very own 'sit out' verandah. Every morning and evening, Joginder the gardener would greet us and once a while, introduce something new - sprigs of peppercorn or some betel leaf!

Dheeraj and Shivlal, the duo who ran the place during our stay, are great! On our last day there, we met another member of the 'house team', Munnappa (or Baba). Gentle soul who would make you the best tea ever!

Between them, they cooked all the meals, cleaned the interiors and made endless cups of coffee with jaggery for us. Our evening meals were delightful and varied. Their cooking is low on oil and salt, and high on taste and generosity - perfect.

Inside the living room is a 'temple room' with an eclectic mixture of Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and Christian traditions.

Set amidst a plantation, mosquitoes are to be expected. Carry along a supply of mosquito repellant and make use of the 'Good Night' coils Dheeraj offers every evening. Also, ensure the 'jaali' door onto the veranda is closed. Throughout our stay, we didn't notice a single mossie in the living/dining areas.

So! If all you want to do is read, walk, reconnect with yourself and nature, in a tranquil setting, Rare Earth Estate is it.

We are already planning our second visit.

Room tip: The room facing the courtyard is terrific!

We stayed at Rare Earths for three nights. It has only 5 rooms, three in the main bungalow & two outside. The ones in the bungalow are larger. Would recommend the room next to the main Verandah with its own seating overlooking the main garden.
Great work by the owners Mr. Yogesh & Revathi Iyer. Superb renovation & artifacts.
At Home food with a staff on three on hand.

Room tip: For two couples the outside cottage rooms. Three couples in the main Bungalow.

Great place to stay and relax, for a weekend away from the city. The staff was courteous and helpful.

The location is of the main road and so very quite and peaceful. It is also close the town of Madikeri and it's attractions.

We stayed 2 nights at Rare earth estate in January. It’s 15 mins from Madikeri town inside a green, calm estate surrounded br trees and coffee estate.the property is very well maintained. We areached afternoon and after a very warm welcome by Ravathi to had an amazing lunch.Food is another great aspect of this property.
About the property:There are 2 Bunglow. Main bungalow has 4 rooms and a big hall and second Bungalow has 2 rooms. Rooms are quite big and specially the huge bathroom. Rooms in Main bulglows are bigger. There is book shelf containg different kind of books. Actually this goes well with the property, have sip in hot coffee and enjoy reading the lawn area.I would suggest you to opt for Main Bunglow rooms.
There are lot of open areas and kids enjoyed a lot. Infact we played box cricket in the lawn.
Special mention about the staffs, Santosh & Dheeraj , they are very prompt and made some excellent food. They were prompt and courteous. Be it arrranging food or bon-fire they were quick and always ready to help.
Only issue we faced during checkout, though we enjoyed unavailability of data service (both Vodafone & Airtel) but during checkout it causes some pain. They have a Airtel hotspot which didn't work either. Finally one of their staff came with us to madikeri town and after seraching couple of ATMs we finally able to withdraw cash and handed over to him.
Other than that this place is very nice and all of us (we were 4 families) including kids enjoyed the say and offcourse the food.

Room tip: Try to opt for Rooms in Main Bungalow

We stayed 2 nights at this place. It’s about 8 Kms from Madikeri. We reached at 2:00 PM and were welcomed by Revathi. Property is nice, calm and very well maintained. Main bungalow has 4 rooms and a big living/Dining area. Second Bungalow has 2 more room. Living area has a nice collection of books for kids and adults. They also had couple of board games to play.
We had asked for bonfire and Santhosh (care taker) was quick to arrange that. Backyard of Bungalow has nice coffee estate, which one can stroll through. Kids had great time watching plantation and spices.
Santosh and Dheeraj prepared some great food. They were flexible and responsive with our asks.
There is no internet signal and life kind of slowed down (away from email and social network). Kids had great time trekking/walking, playing in lawns etc. overall we all enjoyed staying at this place.

Few minor things to taken care- the entry ramp to property has potholes. While SUVs and jeep had no issue, Sedan bumper rubbed ground. Request to owner to get repaired.
Don’t forget to carry mosquito repellent cream you won’t be able to sit in lawn or outside without it. Be careful of Ants in lawn (near bonfire area).
Preferably don’t opt for room-1, if you wanna sleep till late. Caretakers stay in adjacent room and get up by 6 or so. Place is so calm that you can hear their sound and get disturbed.
We had hard time doing balance payment because of poor network signal. Caretaker came with us till Madikeri and we had to go to couple of ATMs to get cash. Bets would be you come with cash.

Again these were minor hitches in bigger scheme of things. I would love to go back again there.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We do out bit and it's really good to be appreciated. Thank you for the same.

As suggested by you, we have already repaired the entrance and now, all vehicles are able to come up without any issue.
Yes, net connectivity is an issue and that's why we clearly mention in our emails that only airtel or bsnl works. For payment, we prefer online transfer either before arrival or while checkingout. If you have aritel connection, then transfer happens easily. So sorry that you faced payment issue.

I want to thank you again for coming and giving us a chance to host you. It was our pleasure completely.

God bless and do visit again.
