“Hugely disappointed”

First of all I have to say that Meathop Hall offers a great space for 13 people, good size bedrooms and plenty of bathrooms. Also in a great location with easy access to Bowness and Windermere. But that's where it stops.
The house is extremely damp and the smell in certain areas is terrible.
The large downstairs lounge which would be great for everyone to gather had an overwhelming smell of damp as did the downstairs kingsize bedroom. The downstairs bathroom had a very strong chemical smell which can only be compared to industrial strength Dettol and mould on the walls was very unpleasant.
We had to buy scented candles and air fresheners to try and disguise the smell.
One of the upstairs bathrooms also had a very unpleasant smell somewhere between a sewer smell and damp.
The dining table is not big enough to seat 13 people comfortably.
The oven does not heat up enough to cook in normal times so our first meal was a long process.
There were no tea towels provided and only 1 bath towel each which is not enough.
The downstairs twin bedroom has 2 skylights which do not have blinds so at 5.30am the room was flooded with daylight so the occupants were wide awake.
The fridge in the utility room was rusty inside and unhygienic.
We had a constant battle with flies as we had to have the windows open to try and get rid of the damp smell. The kitchen and dining room had a constant stream of ants.
The general upkeep of the house is poor. Dust and cobwebs everywhere. Carpets stained and dirty.
The house desperately needs some tlc, paintwork and woodwork is in desperate need of attention.
We would not return to Meathop Hall.

“Dirty, damp, cobwebs, tired”

Just returned from a 3 night family weekend for 13 people. This could be such a fantastic property but feels neglected. It has amazing space and character, but clearly suffers from a damp problem which has been around for a number of years as other people mention it in reviews going back to 2013. As a result, the downstairs bedroom and tv lounge are overwhelmingly musty and even with the scented candles we bought are not pleasant places to be. There are patches of black mould in the downstairs shower room and the house was full of dust and cobwebs. Although advertised as sleeping 13, the dining room table is not big enough for so many people, and it's details such as this which detract from the overall experience. Carpets need replacing throughout, woodwork needs painting. The list is long, and the place needs some investment to live up to what it's advertised to be.

“Wonderful venue for friends and family to meet up.”

Meath Hall is really quirky and full of character. The facilities are excellent with everything you need to make a self catering break a huge success. There are two large fridges which is essential when you are catering for the masses. Super house in an excellent location. Ideal for group gatherings.

“Christmas at Meathop Hall”
Reviewed January 3, 2017 for a stay in December 2016

We stayed here for Christmas week 2016, a family group of 10 plus Molly the chocolate Lab and Lem the Weimaraner. Travelled from North East Scotland and South West England. Lovely warm welcome with cards, cake, the stove fire lit in the dining room and welcoming lights on throughout the house. We had arranged with Lynne the housekeeper to have logs delivered which had been covered for us.

The house was much bigger than it had seemed in the pictures. Internet worked in the kitchen, dining room and the bedroom above the kitchen. The enclosed front garden was a great safe place to let the dogs out. Great dining table in the room with the stove fire which wasn't in any pictures. Super for our Christmas dining!

The oven wasn't that good. One of them was very low in temperature and took much longer than normal which we found out when we cooked on Christmas Eve, so I was prepared for temp adjustment and extra time for planning Christmas dinner, which was pretty darned fine( if I may say so myself!). Plenty of utensils and crockery etc. I did take some of my own cooking things for Christmas as I wasn't sure what would be there, but would've been fine without taking any.

One of the ensuite twin/triple bedrooms was off from the dining kitchen on the ground floor. This was good for my mum with a nice en suite. A couple of the beds were uncomfortable, the two rooms either end of upstairs. Ours dropped a couple slats when I got into bed one night and it was very creaky (We aren't heavy!) They slid easily back in but did make us a bit wary.

Others have commented on the smell in the tv lounge. It's a very old building so maybe nothing that can be done to improve it. This is the only room that does smell damp but we masked it a bit with fragrant candles and a room spray. Lovely open fire in this room was great too. The fires were really easy to light, unlike mine at home. Plenty of hot water and the heating was good. We turned the tumble dryer on once but it made such a racket we turned it off. As it was Christmas we didn't complain about it as we only washed clothes a couple times and plenty space for drying.

All in all we had an amazing time at Meathop Hall and would recommend it for a great place for large gatherings. There really is plenty of room to escape from the gang if you need a quiet moment.

Happy New Year!

“Great property for a family get together”
Reviewed October 23, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

This property is in a quiet hamlet just of the main road , so has easy access to Grange Over Sands, 2 miles away.
There is ample parking, we had 3 cars and all parked without a problem.
We rented the property for a 90th birthday family get together. There were 12 of us ranging from 5year olds to 90.The property had enough bedrooms (6) and bathrooms (5).Two of the bedrooms were on the ground floor which was ideal as a member of our party had difficulties getting about. The bathrooms were either ensuite or next to the bedroom which meant everyone had their privacy. The layout of the property meant that you could have quiet time or be together as a group, as there is a large kitchen with a dinning/seating area ,plus a large room with a more formal dinning option with 3 sofa's round a wood burner. This room we used a lot as it felt quite cosy. There was also a large TV lounge at the opposite end of the property. The kitchen and bathrooms are modern and spacious.
There is outside space at the front of the property with a picnic table and a patio set perfect for sunny days, this is accessable from the kitchen dinner.
The only negative aspects to the property are that the floors are wooden with no carpets so sound travels. The property is looking a bit tired ie needs paint work touching up and a few little repairs could do with carrying out. There is also a damp problem in the large TV lounge
which could be an issue for some people. The odour is being disguised by air fresheners.
To the rear of the property are terraced areas with steep steps not suitable for un supervised children, this area has been neglected, which is a pitty as it has wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
The negatives didn't spoil our break and I would think this could be a great place for a Xmas break.Without the negatives I would have given it 5 stars as everyone enjoyed them selves.

“Great party house”

The house is set in a lovely quiet village with Grange-over-sands within easy striking distance. The house easily accommodated all 13 of us with ample parking for four cars. The well appointed kitchen diner was excellent allowing cooking and socialising to go hand in hand. We all had a wonderful time. The only negatives are that the house could do with a lick of paint and there is a damp problem in the downstairs shower room and the sitting room where the TV is, though there is a dehumidifier in there. If these issues are resolved I would definitely go back.
