“Worth a look if you are in the area”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

The setting is pretty, the exterior is well kept and the interior is typical for such churches. While there is nothing special to draw the traveler, it is certainly worth a stop if you are nearby and have the time. For the religious pilgrim, it may have a special attraction.

“Pilgrimage church”
Reviewed December 18, 2011

This pilgrimage church dates back to a to a 1505 scuffle in a tavern. Badly injured Nicholas Lemmerer had pledged a pilgrimage to the madonna shrine East of Dettelbach and was healed after undertaking this pledge. After this miracle several more did follow (exemplified in the West-chorus). At the location where once stood the Madonna shrine a small chapel was built. In 1606 Julius Echter ordered the construction of the pelgrimage church"Maria im Sand" (or "Maria in arena" in the vernacular). Numerous works of art, such as: the portal, pulpit "Wurze Jesse" (Michael Kern), grace altar (Agostino Bossi), wing altar with four wooden panels (scenes from the life of Mary) and altar plinth "garden of Gethsemane". Empore: 1659 Oratory on pillars at the left side of the transept. The organ is built into the richly decorated early Baroque balustrade, the paintings depicting the eight pains of Mary. In the choir hangs the large cross (Tilman Riemenschneider or his workshop). To the accompanying wall sculptures of Mary and John.
