We had stayed here before, 10 years ago, so were delighted to find the owners and the friendly welcome were unchanged. It is a really lovely hotel - not luxurious, just nice and clean and quite adequately appointed - and the setting is delightful in this ancient hilltop citta d'arte.
We were glad of aircon in our room, meaning we could close the balcony door against possible mosquitoes and against the noise from the adjacent restaurant extractor chimney. In an ideal world, we'd have slept with the door ajar to enjoy the fresh air, but never mind. The balcony, furnished with chairs and adorned, like so much of the exterior of the hotel, with an extraordinary abundance of flowering potted plants, gave us breathtaking views across mile after mile of gently undulating countryside to the far distant horizon.
The bed was comfortable, the bathroom and shower of adequate size and in efficient working order.
The restaurant, where we treated ourselves to a truly memorable meal (it is listed in the Michelin Guide) was busy and obviously popular, even on a Tuesday night in September. We ate fabulously well for about 58 euros for two, including wine, and would certainly recommend the experience.
The only disappointment during our overnight stay was the lack of a Wi-Fi broadband connection in our room, despite the best efforts of the owner. He kindly allowed us to use his computer in reception to print out our boarding passes, so we were happy to put away our laptop and go for a walk around Dozza instead of being tempted to check emails and catch up with news.
We will definitely return to Dozza and stay at the Albergo Cane. It was a delightful experience, absolutely made by the owners and their kind, attentive service.
