“Hotel Zilema”
Reviewed July 4, 2012

As were visiting family in a nearby town (Fagnano Castello) The Hotel Zilema offered a excellent location right on the ocean. The room was great and staff were friendly and helpful, offering excellent service. The breakfasts were substantial in a large dining room with great views, with a freshly cooked omelet if desired!! Plenty of parking, and free Wifi available. We really enjoyed out stay, 5 nights at Hotel Zilema

Travelling by car from Sorrento, we were driving south toward Paolo and literally stumpled on this family run hotel. We were tired, hot, and exhausted and were actually looking for Cetraro which is up the coast. The receptionist was so pleasant and accommodating when we asked for a room; however, only had matrimonial suites left. She had to check with Dussie (I think that's how to spell the owner's name) but invited us to sit in the dining room to rest, have a drink, and wait for a reply. We were given a ground floor room almost like a small bungalow with small patio with table, chairs, and a portable clothes line. I actually did some hand laundry and hung it out to dry! Although the room was large, comfortable, and clean I did not realize the noisy train right across the street! Regardless, it was convenient to walk to the beach, to the town's main area, so we ended up staying two nights instead of one. It is close to Paolo where we did some great shopping and also close to the Terme Luigiane. We did not eat at the Hotel; ventured to a family run restaurant close by. Breakfast was okay since we were late waking up and did not get much of a selection. The staff was most pleasant and helpful. Parking was free, so that was a plus. Very peaceful area so we enjoyed the sea, the sand, and simply relaxed for a couple of days!

Room Tip: Request a room at the back of the hotel if you don't want to be rocked by the sound of the speed...

This is the second time we have stayed at this Hotel and again we have had a fabulous stay. This family run hotel is spotlessly clean, the food is gorgeous and freshly prepared and the owners will do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. They also speak very good English and will help with any translation, taxi bookings, etc. The hotel is across the road from beach (at this time of year there are hardly any trains that go past) and is within easy reach of beautiful towns, eg. Diamante, Belvedere and St Francesco Monastery in Paolo. The 14th Century town at the top of the hill is worth a visit to see the wonderful views from the top. This family is also now opening a new B&B (Luigiane B&B) which is in Terme Luigiane, this is further up in the hills near the Spa and is so peaceful, it's wonderful. Again you will get the excellent service and facilities that this family excel at. I would wholely recommend this Hotel to anyone wanting to stay in a 'real' Italian little town, next to the Beach and near the Spa.

Room Tip: Ask for the 3rd floor with a sea view.

We had a wonderful 5 nights at Hotel Zilema. The owners were wonderful and their service was "above and beyond." We had requested a triple room with a sea view. It turned out to be a ground floor room which faced the sea, but there was no view - except for the train directly across the street. When we complained, they gave us a 3rd floor room with a balcony which faced the mountain in the back of the hotel. It was perfect: quiet, and roomy enough. If we wanted to look at the sea, there was another balcony across the hall, where we enjoyed the sun and sea views. In fact, they were nice enough to prepare us a meal right after we arrived which was around 3:00pm, and serve it to us on that balcony. The breakfasts were very good, and they would prepare eggs and bacon in addition to the buffet, if you wanted.

If you are looking for a pleasant, reasonable, clean hotel to stay in I would consider Hotel Zilema. We were there for 5 nights with a family of 5 and if I was able to go back to that area of Calabria I would stay there. Friendly staff, clean place and Vincenzo speaks pretty good english. We were visiting family inland so we weren't able to eat pranza or cena at the hotel but they were very proud of the meals they offered and I am sure that they would have that home cooked taste and presentation.
Out of 5 stars I would give them 4. Not in the sense of location, luxury and facilities but comfort, cost and hospitality.

We (thats me, my mother, my small son and my husband) had the pleasure of staying at the hotel zilema in May. We could not fault the family at all and Dusy in particular was very helpful and friendly. Both our room and that of my mother were very clean and air conditioning was available. I persinally had no fault with the beds which i found to be comfortable. And the food was delightful - lots of fruit, fresh "cornetti" (croissants), "crostata di mela/ficchi/albiccocca" (local apple or fig or apricot tart), tea, fresh milk for our son, etc etc. We only had dinner there once as we were actually visiting family but we enjoyed our evening meal which was very much cuisine of the locality. Our only issue was that the beautiful view of the sea was sadly intersected by the railway line (only one line) and on the first night it did seem that every train in calabria was out and about! However, for the rest of the week it seemed much quieter - my mums room was a little noisier due to the fact that her room overlooked the line. An excellent hotel and staff - thanks.

If you are looking for a hotel in Calabria on the Tyrrhenian sea, I highly recommend Hotel Zilema. This is a family run hotel, impeccably clean located right across the street from the sea. The meals are fantastic, the staff speaks english and they are highly professional. During our four night stay we were shown the utmost hospitality and kindness that surpassed any hotel in all of my travels. The hotel is ideally situated for days trips to resort towns such as Diamonte and Tropea, and is only 10 minutes from Paola. If you want to venture out to a restaurant, I recommend Lido Carnavale, right there in Lido Guardia Piemontese.
