As mentioned in an earlier review, my friend and I also experienced the problems with parking, the lack of information about the check out time (10am sharp), and the general poor attitude provided to us by both the husband and wife team running this hotel. When asked at the time of check in whether we would be dining with them as well we said "no, we don't think so". This was not because we had anything against their restaurant (about which we knew nothing) it was just we wanted to explore the town find a place there. His response to this was a snarky, "I guess you want to eat at a good restaurant then". This statement was made within 7 minutes of us arriving. Had we not plans to visit St. Ceneri we would have probably left right there.

The hotel is on shared grounds with, get this, a zip line park. Not very French and in the summer, after 10am, swarming with kids. Not romantic or swanky.

My friend is French and she said she has never been treated so rudely in all her experience in France (or anywhere else for that matter). The rooms were average at best and surely not worth the way we were treated. I would not ever stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: A tip to help travelers choose a good room? Choose one at another hotel.

This message to « yaster » as well as to « newthink4 », as this couple had the need to write 2 times comments.
We are very sad our service did not match their expectations.
Our customers are +/- 80% Foreigners & 20% Frenchs
We are ourselves foreigners in France
As those 2 comments were written in July 2013 I just cut past a few comments posted on July 2013 as well by Foreigners using trip advisor.

By Anniehappytraveller – the 6th July 2013 – “A delightful hotel and lovely restaurant”
We had a wonderful five nights at La Gasseau, the rooms are comfortable and the owners were very welcoming
The atmosphere was relaxed and we very much enjoyed the company of the owners
We have a policy of never going back to places we have been before but we may very well make an exception in this case.
In our opinion this is a very special place.

By Tony H. – the 7th July 2013 – “Lovely hotel in southern Normandy”
You can be sure of a warm welcome and lots of personal attention at this elegant, comfortable hotel
We have stayed at a number of hotels in Normandy over the years but we cannot remember any that approached the standard here

By Reetj – the 13th July 2013 – “A gastronomic delight!”
Immediately on arrival, we were made to feel welcome by this pleasant and friendly couple who could not do enough to make our stay memorable. The bedrooms are large, spacious and airy with extremely comfortable beds, spotless bed linen and a good-sized bathroom/shower.
This couple are passionate about what they do and it really shows! Anyone who appreciates good food and wine will adore this place! I can't wait to return and sample more of Theodora's food! Breakfast was also excellent and very good value.

By Muffindog – the 15th July 2013 - “Would rather keep this place a secret!”
The adventure area is naturally very noisy, but this closes at around six and the area becomes blissfully calm.
The rooms are all beautifully furnished, with decent sized, comfortable beds. The upstairs landing is arranged as a guest lounge and is well stocked with games & books for the inevitable French weather.
For descriptions of the hosts and the area, please read some of the other reviews
The chef is a British/Chinese lady who can produce something memorable for all tastes, the stuffed sea bass was worthy of a 3-star Michelin establishment! Value overall was excellent for the type of establishment and quality of menu
Breakfast was generous and leisurely.
In the end it was a shame we had to move on; a two-day stay would have been better, allowing us to explore the pretty nearby villages.

... no extra comments ... thank you very much for your attention

Absolutely the most UN-accommodating hosts I have encountered. Be sure to read instructions about parking and check out ahead of time, as the hosts will not re-iterate upon arrival, nor assist you with instructions on how to get through property gates. Parking is a hassle as the property is inside a 3 owner estate, and has hours / regulations as to what time you may drive up to hotel and park. The husband is absolutely un-welcoming, condescending, and seemed to ignore English speakers at breakfast tables, instead catering to the French clientele. The wife (and chef), while more smiley, was disingenuous and snippy if you were not interested in dining on the property. The hotel, however, is beautiful and the rooms are nicely appointed. What a shame that it has such un-customer oriented owners. If you don't like foreigners, why on earth are you in the hospitality business?

as the wife of "newthink4" (the one above who wrote "worst hoteliers I ever experienced), I sent you the same answer,
unfortunately, it seems trip advisor accept two very negative reviews coming from the same customer but do not accept the same answer to both of them
message to the new readers : please have also a quick glance at our answer to the above review.
about this one, do we have to precise we are ourselves customers in France and certainly not unfriendly with customers who are 80% of our clients
in the case something went wrong ... may be we can look for the reason somewhere else ?
best regards

We booked Le Gasseau as a half-way stop on our journey from Calais to La Rochelle last month. Our only difficulty was identifying the hotel from the surrounding adventure park. On arrival, we would suggest you park at the [closed] gates, then walk up to the hotel at the top of the drive to arrange entry with your car. The adventure area is naturally very noisy, but this closes at around six and the area becomes blissfully calm.
The rooms are all beautifully furnished, with decent sized, comfortable beds . The upstairs landing is arranged as a guest lounge and is well stocked with games & books for the inevtable French weather.

Dining was a comfortable and discreet pleasure, each table is screened from its neighbour. The chef is a British/Chinese lady who can produce something memorable for all tastes, the stuffed sea bass was worthy of a 3-star Michelin establishment! Value overall was excellent for the type of establishment and quality of menu so we felt comfortable accepting Didier's choice of wines; our bill for the stay came to a shade over €200 - very reasonable.
Breakfast was generous and leisurely.
In the end it was a shame we had to move on; a two-day stay would have been better, allowing us to explore the pretty nearby villages.

Immediately on arrival, we were made to feel welcome by this pleasant and friendly couple who could not do enough to make our stay memorable. The bedrooms are large, spacious and airy with extremely comfortable beds, spotless bed linen and a good-sized bathroom/shower. The location is stunning with beautiful scenery. One really feels as if one has got back to nature. Theodora, the chef, is a master restaurateur and it shows! She cooks with locally sourced, best quality produce and produces a fine dining experience which is truly outstanding. Didier pairs each course with superb wines which complement the food magnificently. On warm summer evenings, one eats out on the terrace admiring the stunning scenery. What could be more perfect? Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to stay an extra night but it was well worth it just to experience the amazing food one more time. This couple are passionate about what they do and it really shows! Anyone who appreciates good food and wine will adore this place! I can't wait to return and sample more of Theodora's food! Breakfast was also excellent and very good value. A couple of small things with regard to the rooms - a box of tissues, proper glasses (not plastic), a face flannel and some quality toiletries in the bathroom would not cost much to provide and would give the rooms a more upmarket feel.

You can be sure of a warm welcome and lots of personal attention at this elegant, comfortable hotel in the beautiful surroundings of the Alpes Mancelles. We were a group of seven friends but the proprietors Didier and Theodora did not seem at all put out -- indeed they often joined in the general good-humoured pre-supper chat on the terrace -- and of course we were fortunate to be able to enjoy Theodora's excellent cooking. We have stayed at a number of hotels in Normandy over the years but we cannot remember any that approached the standard here.
