Hostellerie de Le Wast Chateau des Tourelles
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 13, 2013

Diane fancied a birthday weekend in France and Chateau des Tourelles certainly filled the bill. Normally speeding through on the way to our place in the Loire Valley, this was a snatched taste of a different rural France. The beautifully-kept chateau is stylish bordering on luxury and with such a friendly staff making guests really feel valued and a superb cuisine it's a place for some pampering and all at a reasonable price. We travel a great deal and Chateau des Tourelles is for us second only to the Aminta above Sorrento.

Room Tip: The heating is user-friendly and the windows can be opened.

If you want somewhere comfortable, with excellent food and very friendly service, and easy to drive to from Calais or The Channel Tunnel, then this could be the place for you. I have been visiting the Chateau for over ten years and each time it has been improved but still delights. I took my family there for an overnight break and treat in early May and we were delighted as always. The atmosphere in the dining room is very relaxed but also provides a nice atmosphere while the food was most enjoyable and of a high standard. The rooms are typically french in character but very roomy and comfortable..

Room Tip: Choose the older rooms or those not on the ground floor. The rooms on the ground floor lead off a co...

On a brief visit to Normandy we needed a small hotel near to the Calais ferry and the Chateau des Tourelles fitted the bill. We had an excellent room with a four poster bed which was furnished with antique pieces. The hostess and her family were extremely welcoming and pleasant, and happy to chat to guests in French or English. We spoke to other guests who were using the hotel as a touring base and had visited many times previously. They were all prepared to recommend it to friends. The dinner and breakfast were top quality. There is ample parking on site and we would be very happy to return, it ticked all the boxes for our needs.

As they say in France, fantastic "rapport qualite/prix"! This is why one used to come to France - a warm welcome, wonderful food, and slightly quirky rooms! NOT for those seeking a "wellness centre", fitness room or gym, but as a base for a trip to the Pas de Calais, or as overnight stop before or after a channel crossing, this is La Belle France at its best!

Room Tip: We have stayed in the same room both times we have visited. It is quiet, clean, and everything works...

The hotel is easily located and is close to the main arterial coast roads and channel crossings. It is a great base for touring the area around Calais and Boulogne. This is a family hotel and it is in many ways a typical French provincial hotel. If you are expecting all the mod cons of modern hotels, please don’t go. It is unfair on them and unfair on you. This is a very pleasant comfortable and inexpensive country hotel but it has all the basics. It has TV, en-suite bathrooms or showers and comfortable rooms. It is clean, well-managed and with very friendly and helpful owners who, together with their staff, work like Trojans to look after you.

Where this place scores is on its food. It is of superb quality and they have good changing menu, all of which is inexpensive and you can wash it down with some of the well-chosen range of inexpensive wines on offer. There is plenty of free parking and gardens at the rear and I fully intend to return here again the summer. I suspect that the food here is so good that the restaurant can get busy but there is plenty of space in the very elegant restaurant. A great place to stay overnight en-route or for a short break and , of course, the good old booze cruise.

Room Tip: If you want a bath - ask when booking. Not all rooms have them.

Easy to find from all channel ports and tunnel, excellent stop over en route or for longer stays to explore local area. Food five star. Good presentation excellent quality. Rooms spacious, quiet, and very clean. Dogs made very welcome. Lots of safe on site parking and large gardens and terrace for sunny days. UK TV for those who miss home! Highly recommended. Owners speak good English for people with little or no French. At least our twentieth stay here at all times of the year, so that speaks volumes.

We booked this hotel as a convenient base for a little exploring of the Pas de Calais & for its proximity to the Tunnel terminal. From our research we were a little unsure as to what we would find.
We found a gem that, like many precious stones, will not be loved by everyone but will be treasured by many.
There is hint of timeless faded elegance about the place as a whole - more obvious in the original house where the more interesting rooms are - which belies the effort recently gone into restoring its past reputation. The staff - especially 'madame' - were exceptional but in the way of a being at a best friend's house rather than a hotel. The food was excellent with well balanced complete menus which can be interchanged, some interesting a la carte options & a good wine list.
Our room was in a newer wing and was a good size with a nice bathroom - the bed was a little small (standard double) and firm for our taste but not unreasonable
Pre and post dinner drinks and chat in front of a large open fire in the lounge area were a highlight of a very pleasant couple of days. This is a place we will return to.

Room Tip: The rooms in the original house have more character but all are very reasonable
