Montanejos is a pretty village in the Alta Mijares region of Castellon. This is a dramatic and beautiful part of Spain, heavily forested with many canyons, fast rivers and pretty villages. The town itself has many hotels, some with natural spas, and many bars, for this area, although relatively unknown to Brits, is very popular with the Spanish. The real attraction of the area is the river Mijares which flows dramatically through a series of gorges from the embalse above. Canyoning and canoeing are popular together with cliff climbing in the gorge. But to me the greatest pleasure is swimming from the small beach at the beginning of the gorge. Here the water is crystal clear and warmed by thermal springs from the nearby cliffs. I have swam up the gorge in January and the water temperature was fine. There are loads of walks round here, a cafe by the beach and a lovely picnic area. Enjoy.
