My husband and I booked La Casita Bonita for a nine day break to coincide with his 50th birthday, and we really couldn't have asked for anywhere better.
We didn't want to hire a car during our stay, and this didn't really pose as much of a problem at all. We had arranged for Garry (one of the owners) to pick us up from Malaga airport and on the way to La Casita he took us to the local big (cheap) supermarket to buy groceries and beer, which was a lovely touch. On arrival at La Casita we fell in love with the place. It is in an absolute stunning setting, the views are breathtaking. La casita itself is more like a home from home. There is nothing lacking, kitchen has everything you need, bathroom stocked, more than adequate bedding and towels throughout our stay. We walked into Monda village on the first night, about 35 minutes strolling, and this is also delightful, a traditional Spanish village, but it did make us more determined to learn the language because we did feel a bit ignorant, they spoke little english, but infinitely more than our spanish!
We had booked this break to have a complete chill out, and boy did we get it. Heli and Garry couldn't have been more perfect hosts, totally unobtrusive, but there when you needed anything. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They took us orange picking one day and also collecting water straight from the mountain spring, amazing to us townies!
When we booked this break I wasn't sure how I would handle the peace and quiet, because it was such a different holiday for us, so, before we left for Spain we booked a night in Marbella to break up our stay in Monda. I wish we hadn't bothered, after the total relaxation of La Casita, Marbella was far too hectic, and I couldn't wait to get back 'home'.
If you're looking for a totally relaxing holiday, where the biggest decision you'll have to make is whether to go in the pool or chill on a sunbed with a cold drink, then this is for you. We can both honestly say we have never had a better holiday, and we're lucky enough to have had a few.
One thing I do have to mention is Heli's fabulous cooking. For a nominal charge Heli will cook you a fabulous meal that can rival any good restaurant, there's allsorts to choose from and it was all absolutely mouthwatering.
My husband and I have always said we would never go to the same place twice, as the world is such a big place to explore, but I can honestly say, we will go back here.
I could go on and on about La Casita, and Heli and Garry the wonderful owners, but I seriously suggest you try it for yourselves, you will not be disappointed.
A big thank you to Heli and Garry for not keeping this wonderful place to yourselves, I'm not sure I could share it!

“Fantastic, quiet, relaxing, the best hosts!”
Reviewed May 21, 2012 for a stay in May 2012

Have just returned from a week at La Casa Bonita, Heli and Garry are the perfect hosts. The facilities are great, very comfortable bed, powerfull shower, sunbeds with matresses, and pillows, beautiful views and a lovely tapas and wine when you arrrive, what more can you ask for? It is a very short drive to the local town where there are bars, restaurants and supermarket, all of which are very reasonable. Heli and Garry are extremely helpfull, nothing is too much trouble. Highly recomended!!!

“True hospitality in a fantastic setting”
Reviewed May 11, 2012 for a stay in March 2012

We stayed in Casita Bonita for just over a fortnight in March, and were completely charmed by it. We were looking for somewhere quiet, comfortable, secluded, and relatively low-key within a region that could offer a lot in the way of cultural and natural history on the off chance that we wanted to stir ourselves and stray from the immediate locality. We also wanted somewhere that we could be pampered if we so chose, and Casita Bonita fitted the bill perfectly.

The Casita is like a little gingerbread house but with mod cons – the comfortable bed with superb quality bedding, the dishwasher and the power shower were all particularly appreciated: quality in simplicity. The Casita is set just below the owners’ house (Garry and Heli), and the arrangement of space within the large plot is such that one can be as sociable or private as one wishes. I was especially taken by the beautiful gardens that Heli is creating. And squeezing fresh orange juice from oranges that were picked only a day previously, standing on the veranda looking out over the mountains – well, that’s hard to beat on the first morning (and, indeed, every successive morning and afternoon). We drank spring water drawn from springs rising in the chalk hills, and made lemonade from lemons growing in the garden. Our favourite shop was in Coin, a North African grocers with the freshest meat and vegetables I encountered anywhere on this trip (local markets included). And the almond cakelets from the grocery are out of this world: a true mistress of her art creates them on the shop premises, along with all the marinades.

As a gingerbread house, the Casita is a log cabin with two small extensions for the bedroom and bathroom. For heat control in the summer there is air conditioning, and there are various effective heating options for earlier in the year when the nights can still be very cold (i.e. in late March!). Use of gas and electricity is unlimited, which is very generous. The Casita is set within the hills covered with almond and olive trees. As a completely unseasoned Mediterranean traveller, I adored walking in the hills through these trees, and among all the amazing flowers that grow wild and bloom in the spring: lavender, rock roses, tiny blue irises, swards of daisies. Beautiful.

The natural history of the broader region is amazing too: there is the el Chorro gorge where all flora and fauna are protected – I have never heard so many birds singing at once, and I live in a rural county in England – and the cultural history of the region is a rich palimpsest of a succession of highly sophisticated civilisations. For some reason, the tenth-century castle walls in Marbella caught my imagination – I guess because Moorish castles are not one what has learnt to think of when Marbella is mentioned. In the same vein, the tourist information officer in the Square of Oranges in the old town in Marbella seemed pleasantly surprised when I asked for direction to the contemporary print museum (worth a visit for the architecture alone). Marbella has culture with a capital K too.

We never did get past Malaga airport to explore the castle and Picasso museums there, but fully intend to do so. There’s a lot more to see and do in this region, and I think this will be a theme in coming years. Most of our holiday was spent at the Casita or in the immediate area and very nice it was too. I made friends with our hosts’ dogs and took them out on long, much-appreciated walks in the hills – a treat for them and me! And Garry and Heli are just lovely.

P.S. I marked this property as suitable for people with disabilities - well, there are lots of different types of disability. The steepness of the plot would be difficult for those with compromised mobility, but it's a welcoming, emotionally safe environment and that counts for a lot. Maybe that's why everyone loves coming here!

“The embodiment of hospitality”
Reviewed August 16, 2011 for a stay in June 2011

Our break in the mountains up above Marbella near Monda was truly relaxing. You reach La Casita Bonita via about a mile of unpaved track so make sure you get full insurance on your hire car! La Casita Bonita is a lovely wooden cabin with everything you could possibly need. A plunge pool, amazing view, sun loungers, private spaces galore, gas barbecue, games, menus of the local restaurants, well equipped kitchen and there's even a radio in the shower! Missing anything? Then simply ask the lovely Heli and Gary who were almost impossibly accommodating.

La Casa Bonita is extremely well located and we took day trips to Ronda, Bobastro, Ardales, Antequera, Istàn and various natural/national parks. We saw Egyptian Vultures and Booted Eagles amongst other amazing wildlife. It was a little hot for hiking but there appear to be some good routes in the nearby Sierra de las Nieves natural park and beyond. The short walks we did take provided some spectacular views and some interesting flora and fauna.

We mostly ate out for lunch and cooked for ourselves on the BBQ at night; fish with chilli and garlic, pork escalopes with herbs, lovely salads, plenty of jamon ibérico/serrano, fresh fruit and all washed down with lovely Spanish wine that costs a fraction of what it does in the UK. Heli and Gary provided a wonderful welcome pack including fizz, fruit and salad, bread, butter, charcuterie and even olive oil that they pressed from their own olives! Lovely.

My main takeaway from our lovely time at La Casita Bonita is that if anyone should be working in hospitality then it's Heli and Gary. They were extremely helpful, professional and friendly but also sensitive to our needs. They seem to have a magical knack for creating the right balance between privacy and sociability. We spent our last night on their terrace with a few glasses of wine and chat, (a lot about gardening; Heli's done a beautiful job).

If you're looking for somewhere glamorous and boutique then stick to Marbella but for us as lovers of landscape, nature, cooking and unpretentious people this was perfect. Highly recommended.

“"A place to relax and truly escape"”
Reviewed June 22, 2011 for a stay in June 2011

Having just returned from La Caitsa Bonita I can truly say that both my wife and I have had a wonderful experience in this romantic hideaway run by Heli & Garry. They work very hard to ensure all your comforts and needs are met including provision of local fresh produce being prepared and delivered to your door. (The fresh orange juice is the best you will ever experience!!). The accomodation is very comfortable with superb views of the olive strewn hillside. From the first night to the last day we found this couple and their hideaway to be a truly memorable encounter.
