Palazzo del Gabelliere
Ranked #1 of 2 Vogogna B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 7, 2012

We have stayed in Palazzo del Gabelillere several times now and it is just a beautiful place to stay near Lake Maggiore. It has been beautifully restored by Nicole and her husband and offers large double bedrooms with a lovely bathroom. The small town of Vogogna is a charming old town and the Palazzo is on a back street surrounded by a variety of wonderful period buildings. From the top floor apartment, which is our favourite, you can see across the amazing old rooves, which are somewhat less than straight! The local restaurant just down the road is also a great treat and Nicole can give you loads of alternatives and also advise where else to visit. We travel a lot and this really is a favourite location, so don't go and stay right on the Lake, go and give the Palazzo a try, you won't regret it!

Room Tip: Try the top apartment you won't be disappointed

The B&B was just a random pick and what a lucky one! The building is an old tax collector's house, beautifully refurbished, equipped with appropriate furniture providing a great atmosphere. The rooms are clean and comfortable, ours had a terrace with a stunning view. The owner is extremely friendly so the whole visit was a great pleasure.
The hotel has a free WiFi, however it is somewhat weak in some parts of the house. The hotel does not have its own parking but parking the car in a nearby public (free) parking zone was without a problem (off season, though). The area is easily accessible by a train and hiking trails start just in the backyard making this a great location.

I was at palazzo del Gabelliere many times already, alone and with my better half.
it’s a pleasure to return each time, it’s like being in a dream, fantastic small ancient town, something you can only see in the movies, and this small boutique hotel, is a real boutique every piece and every corner is to look and enjoy.... every little item in this place is handcrafted and uniquely picked by Nicole, the owner which is so exquisitely caring patient and trying to help you with everything, Just one dangerous think about being at the Gabelliere, once you are there you want to stay there forever.

Room Tip: ask for the rooms at the front, all are good but these are a bit more spacious.

We wished we could have had 3 nights here instead of the 2 as firstly we were welcomed like family and the town itself deserves a very detailed visit; it is only about 75 minutes from Malpensa Airport (Milan). The B & B is in a medieval building but has been completely restored, refurbished and decorated with antiques and lots of style. There is no lift and access to the rooms is by a narrow staircase. The fabrics, furniture and decor of rooms is very chic .... perhaps a few more lights would be welcome. The mattress was not the latest one but adequate and the nights were absolutely silent. Only the locals use the cobbled road in front of the B & B. We dropped off the luggage in front and then parked nearby as directed by Nicole. The bathroom was modern and spacious, with hydromassage shower. Breakfast is basic with brioche in the room and Nicole shows you how to use the coffee machine in the guest lounge when you arrive. Nicole is a warm hostess and she also explains what there is to see in the area (in detail); the lovely gift shop next is also owned by Nicole. The key to our room seems original, made of cast iron. We were granted an excellent free guided tour of the small area where the Palazzo, the fortress and church are located by Signor Sandro of the Enoteca del Castello. We then purchased our picnic goodies from the Enoteca to take on our alpine tour to Alpe Devero, about an hour away.

We chose Palazzo del Gabelliere based on other Trip Advisor recommendations and we were even more impressed when we arrived. It is a lovely boutique hotel with only 5 or 6 beautifully decorated rooms which gives it a very personal atmosphere. Nicole, manager and owner, speaks fluent English and was the most gracious host we have ever encountered. The hotel is beautifully decorated, with modern bath facilities and located on a quiet street with a great restaurant just around the corner. The village of Vogogna is refreshingly very untouristy which can be a nice reprieve from a visit to the Italian Lakes like Lake Maggiore which is only an hour drive's away. But above all else, Nicole is the star of this great little hotel. She goes out of her way to accommodate her guests and is a wealth of information and recommmendations. When my 'fussy' husband was missing his very soft pillow from home Nicole actually brought a very soft down pillow from her own house for him to use. She won his heart with that gesture!

While this is not listed as a 'bed and breakfast' hotel, since Nicole doesn't serve an actual breakfast, every day the room is cleaned and fresh, delicious packaged croissants and cakes were left for us to enjoy that evening or in the morning. Plus she has a beautiful lounge with a wonderful espresso machine usable at any time that makes great cappaccino, espresso and tea. We stayed for a week and enjoyed travelling to great hikes and quaint villages. We would definitely return and can only say that this is the best hotel experience we have ever had. You NEED to stay here and enjoy the medieval village and great hospitality in rural Italian countryside, but close enough for day trips to more touristy locations like the Italian Lakes District without the cost or hassle of all the crowds at night! GO! You will not regret it and will love every minute!

Room Tip: The top room with fireplace and balcony is the best! Very spacious although you need to climb 5 set...

This B&B is so old (500 or 600 years old?), however, bathroom is redecorated for modern times.
My room is one of top(4th floor?).
The view from my room is so beautiful.
You can imagine( or time-trip?) a medieval village!

The buildings is fabulous of course...but "the owners" are even better !
Nicole and Marco welcome their guest.
They not only run the B&B but they also contribute to their village's future.
They taught me about everything ...old village like this place has many problems...people,children, education, culture, job and so on.
We share these problems all over the world...
I feel so much that they love Vogogna.

Someday I'd like to stay again!

Vogogna is a good strategic location to base yourself if you are traveling in Northern Italy. It is within an hour or two of comfortable driving to Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta and the Italian Alps. The town of Vogogna itself is a cultural and historical attraction. And Palazzo del Gabelliere is the place to stay in Vogogna. Nicole (the owner) makes you feel perfectly welcome with her unique personal attention. The over 600 year-old building as well as the rooms are professionally renovated and well equipped (e.g. with heated bathroom floors). It is a very comfortable place to rest after a long day of sight seeing or mountain trekking. What a wonderful hidden gem!
