After visiting the nuraghe and the museum in Barumini we decided to eat in town and the restaurant that was recommended to us was "Sa Lolla".

The restaurant is centrally located and has a very attractive courtyard. Inside, however, is dark and dull. The litghting wasn't quite right, they had energy savings bulbs. The tablecloths had an old fashioned look and the layout of the tables was making me feel unease.

The menu was a little tedious - at least for an Italian - and the restaurant didn't have everything it was offered from the menu. That made the choice even more difficult.
I had pasta with mushrooms, the waitress told me they were "porcini", in effect it was a mixture of porcini and truffle. What if I didn't like truffles? The pasta came with lots of cream, another ingredient that I don't like, in fact I ate 1/4 of the pasta as the cream was making me feel sick. The menu didn't specify all the ingredients. What if a customer is lactose intolerant or vegan?
Portions were extremely generous, but unfortunately the quality of food and "attention to detail" was low.

The service was extremely slow, there was only one waitress for the whole restaurant.

On a positive note, my friend liked his pasta, he even ate part of mine. But he is not Italian!

The menu didn't show the "coperto", so they shouldn't have charged for it, or we could have refused to pay for it. However, I wanted to get out of the place as soon as possible and decided not to argue for €4. Total price for two plates of pasta, 2 drinks (wine and water) and coperto was €23.

Overall it's a nice and spacious place, it is a pity that it is not valued as it should. I would have given it 4 or 5 stars if they had invested more on the quality of food and choice of the menu.

Sa Lolla is tucked away in its own sumptious garden off the centre in Barumini, a village close to the Unesco World Heritage 'Nuraghe' Su Nuraxi. There is also a new museum in the village, linked to the site, and it's close to the Giara di Gesturi plateau with its wild horses, so it's worth spending at least one night. The room we had was overlooking the leafy garden, adjoining the restaurant and both are of a high comfort and very relaxed. Sat under the shade of the abricot trees we caught up with our travel notes. Only problem we had was the rather tired air-conditioning in our room which was so weak we still melted in the night. Fear of moskitoes stopped us opening the window. Please, owners, if you read this, invest in a new appliance!

We'd got to the end of a two week trip around Sardinia, and the thing that had still eluded us was a small hotel which had some quiet space where you could sit and chill with a beer and relax. Amazingly we found that at Su Lolla.

The hotel isn't in all honesty going to win awards for the quality of its rooms. They are basic but everything works. Ours looked out over the garden; this is mostly screened by trees so actually opening the windows doesn't let others see in but you get a nice view of greenery.

The garden is a joy; there are five or six big trestle tables, some under awnings, others under a vine. They are shady and quiet. As the hotel is away from the main roads, there's no passing traffic. So of an afternoon it is very possible to sit and relax in the garden, enjoy an Ichnusa and unwind. It was really good for that.

The evening meals are very good - pastas and pizzas freshly made and delicious. Porchetta is available if you ask in advance; we did (for a treat on our last night).

Breakfast was basic and minimal but I really enjoyed out two nights here. It also represents a superb base to get up to Gesturia. Just don't expect it to be a luxurious place and you wont' be disappointed.
