“Wonderful relaxing stay near Girona airport”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

We stayed here for one night prior to catching an early morning flight the next day. We booked through the hotel website and found a great deal. The hotel is very relaxing from the minute you step into its gardens. The outdoor thermal pool is a treat, which was the main reason for us choosing this hotel; the water is renowned for its healing properties and one can only stay in the pool for a maximium of 30 minutes (15 minutes for children) as the water brings blood pressure down. There is a jet in the pool for hydrotherapy and the added bonus is that it is open until quite late (2300 hours). We also went for a walk around the village to find the spring waters and there are a couple of fountains near the roman ruins and the water comes out at 60 degrees. The water is an acquired taste but healthy!

The staff in reception were very friendly and they even managed to locate an iPad charger from the owner's niece as the one we brought was not functioning. You need to bring your own towels for the pool as you are not allowed to use the hotel ones.;(

Breakfast was plentiful with lots of fruit, pan y tomate and an omlette station. The coffee machine is not great which is a disappointment in Spain. Otherwise, I would definitely consider staying here next time I visit Catalonia.

I have spent three days at this 'magic' place which seems nearly unreal when compared to its surroundings. It is a kind of island in the centre of a nice village called Caldes de Malavella where you find yourself in the middle of a familiar atmosphere where everybody is friendly to each other but, at the same time, you have enough privacy to enjoy what a spa is for.

The hotel itself is divided into two clear parts: the old one (which I didn't see) where the rooms are rather old, though clean and tidy, and without air conditioning and the new one (we stayed at a superior bedroom without a balcony or terrace, but with a big window) where you can stay in modern and stylish bedrooms with Wi-fi, air conditioning as well as a safe, a modern and quite big size tv, a table and two chairs and the bathroom part is in three parts: the toilet is separated from the rest, the shower is big and well designed, the last two are closed with some crystal doors and the sink, towels, hair dryer... are opposite these two other spaces and visible to everybody in the room, but it's also apart (some wood panels in between) from the bedroom itself. The wardrobe is really big and there is also a small, empty fridge. It's all minimalist but you can feel the good quality of the materials and the good work of its designer.

As far as the spa part is concerned, I must say I expected a less good way of working, so I was nicely surprised to find every one of the treatments we took were really professional and of a high quality. We chose the 'stress pack' which consisted of four treatments and they were worth every euro they cost.

Just opposite the hotel entrance, there is an open-air thermal pool which is open all year round and its temperature is about 32-34 degrees. It's a real good sensation to go out of a treatment at the spa and just in your bathrobe go to the pool and sunbathe for a while of have a relaxing bath in that healing water.

I must also comment on the restaurant in the same hotel. I chose full-board and it was a great decision because the food was excellent as well as its presentation. You had about four dishes to choose from in the starter and about three in the main course, the dessert could be personally picked up as a self-service. The ingredients were always fresh...yummy fish! and the waiters kind and professional.

All in all, I would and hope will repeat the experience of spending a couple of days at this Balneari Prats where I have been able to enjoy the people around me as well as myself thanks to the 'magic' atmosphere I could feel in the air.

Excellent value for a relaxing stay on a day trip from Barcelona. The spa treatments are traditional and good value and the naturally heated spa swimming pool a treat. The renovated part of the hotel is excellent with fragrant wood lined corridors. The building is impressive and stylish The restaurant is good value if a bit pedestrian.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the renovated wing of the hotel, which is of a much higher standard.

Having spent 1 night in early June at Balneari Prats, I thought it deserved an excellent review. Having booked a few days before on the web and at a discount, it was especially good value for money. Beyond that, I was particularly impressed by:
- the renovated main building of the hotel: airy and stylish decoration both in the common areas and in the renovated bedrooms;
- the garden: a small parc more than a garden really ; the private spacious terrace overlooking the garden was a real treat.
- the friendly personnel;
- the hot water garden pool, which was a delight at dawn ;
- how quiet the place was generally, despite its easy access (if you drive, 10 minutes from the highway).
For these reasons, I thought it could be a perfect stop-over for travelers hopping from one Spanish City to the next, or a good hub to visit Girona and surroundings, or quite simply the perfect place for a 1 day "get away" as I used it. The restaurant offered very decent food and was very good value for money in the evening. Tip for families: The parc also offers a basic playground for kids and the extra cost of having 1 kid sleep in the parents bedrooms seemed very affordable. As I understand it, they cap the number of guests per room at 3, so 2 kids would mean an extra bedroom.
I would caution though that the hotel offers accomodations of all types, including back facing (overlooking what looks like a garage) and also rooms in a separate building, which I have not seen but would assume are not as nice as the modern one I slept in. Also, being a "balneari", the hotel attracts mainly clients on a water cure, which means you will come accross clients wearing a bathrobe while having breakfast. And the Spa facilities are dated, which was a shame given how qualified the personnel was. In summary, it would Not be my first choice for a romantic week-end, but it was the perfect "get away" hotel given the location, private terrace & jacuzzi.
