“Mercure hotel, Moulins”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Roadside hotel which have avoided before because, as someone with very keen hearing, feared traffic noise would intrude. However, exhausted by a long day's drive, stayed overnight on the 12th August and found the hotel comfortable; the bedrooms are all at the back so there is no traffic noise - and the beds are arge. The rooms overlook a pleasant rural scene. In addition, a good-sized swimming pool is a welcome extra, especially after day's travel from the south. Very easy to find!
Warning: quality of food falls short of that for a hotel of this rating so if you want a good dinner without leaving a hotel and can face a few extra miles - go onto Mercure at Nevers. Hotel indifferent but good location (on banks of Loire).

Room Tip: Always look at a hotel room first and listen for any extraneous noises - lifts, air-conditioning.

It took me a long time to decide to give this hotel a 4 out of 5 rating. It depends on what you are looking for.

Let's add up the positives. Friendly Staff, Quiet location, even though a national highway and railway line are close by, Very adequate breakfast (not up to German standards, but where else do you find that, other than in Germany ?). Excellent bedding comfort.

The marginal points are: Not a real shower, you shower in the bath tub, although the shower fittings are new and of good standard. The floor is wet when you get out, you need to be agile on your feet.

And the last point is that it is 10 km from Moulins, if you want to eat elsewhere other than the restaurant, you need your car. It is also hard to imagine anybody staying here who does not have their own car.

Senior's rate apparently includes breakfast, however the 13€50 for the breakfast buffet strikes me as expensive, although there are organic produce available, but no eggs and bacon, etc as far as I could see. We arrived after a group one morning and there wasn't much left.

We arrived after a hot day, and needed to put the A/C at 18 to sleep comfortably at night. It wasn't really 18 though with the A/C.

The front desk staff are very helpful, especially the young lady with braided hair, She had to manage the whole ship Sunday morning and did so gracefully and with a smile.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are the same size as the standard rooms, you get Dressing gowns, a beverage machi...

As this was a second stopover on our drive from southern Spain to England and my husband was doing all the driving, I booked a Superior Room in this hotel which I hoped would provide a little more luxury than the hotel we had stayed at the previous night in Girona, Spain. The first room we were given the key to (Room 314) absolutely wreaked of cigarette smoke - we had requested a non-smoking room in our computer booking - but the Receptionist willingly gave us keys to other Superior Rooms for us to choose. We settled on Room 318, which was perfectly satisfactory.

We were too tired to go into town that evening to eat and having seen comments that the food at this hotel was very good - part of the reason for booking it - we decided to eat in the hotel's restaurant. The choices on the menu were very limited. We both chose the pave de boeuf which we requested, in French, to be served medium rare. I have never had to eat a pair of old slippers before, but imagine what we were served is like. The meat had not been rested adequately and there was blood running all over the plate and was in any event entirely tasteless as well as tough. I was too tired to complain in French, and my Spanish - which is competent - fell on deaf ears. In fairness, when I complained about the meal when settling the bill the following morning, we were given a complimentary breakfast, which I have to say for a 4 star hotel was average, at best, compared to the 3 star Hotel Costabella we had stayed at in Girona..

We both found this hotel to be rather impersonal, bordering on the cold. It does of course enjoy a very convenient location, but we would not be minded to book again.

this is essentially a motel on quite a big road. Staff are civil and beds seem to be stripped every day but there was a bit of a whiff on entering reception, bathrooms could be a lot cleaner and the undersides of white soft slippers were grubby after padding about in the room for a night. The corridor carpet was pretty grubby and there is not enough "extracurricular" cleaning. Unappealing orange decor, teenage girl in our party found her room creepy. Breakfast is not cheap but beware if you are not an early riser: once it's gone it's gone. Most of the guests seemed pretty happy but it is not for the fastidious.

Travelling from the south of France a friend had stated Moulins was a good place for an overnight stop while travelling back to the UK. Mercure Hotels are a major chain and usually reliable so I booked this hotel well in advance. Plus points: Huge beds, clean rooms great breakfast and if booked in advance can get a really good rate (compared to the UK), good views. Downside: 10km out of town, pool not open when we were there, a source of dissapointment when travelling with a six year old, very ugly exterior.
Staff were friendly and Moulins is indeed a nice town to visit, if you have not got a car though and stay at this Mercure, you won't be visiting it!
