What a find! We loved this restaurant and would definitely return if in the area. We ran into the restaurant from the pouring rain, and we were shown a table immediately. Even though we were soaking wet, we did not get a chill from the restaurant; the temperature was wonderful.

Two of us ordered set menus, which had many options; the other two ordered a la carte. Here are just the highlights of our meal. The soup of the day was mushroom. It was served in a large, white tureen and a large ladle. I served myself. I’m not sure who could eat the entire amount, but I gave it my best effort. On a rainy day, it was outstanding. My husband had the garlic soup, which was also served in a tureen. I don’t know which soup was better. I would order this as my entire meal! The duck breast in orange sauce was very nice as were the snails and frogs legs.

We had the choice of dessert or cheese. Honestly, we could have skipped both, but when in France… We opted for the cheese plate, which honestly was the only disappointment of the meal. The cheese was rather old looking, and the Swiss cheese was rubbery. The bleu was perfectly fine.

The service was wonderful. I highly recommend this restaurant for an upscale French meal.

Because of the torrential rain, I did not have my camera with me. Too bad.

Hotel du Chateau is perfectly situated in the lovely, one-stop sign village of Beynac-et-Ceznac outside of the busier and more well-known town of Sarlat. It sits directly across from the Dordogne River, at the base of a hill topped by an imposing medieval castle . . . one of many in this region steeped in a long history of brave knights and vicious battles.

The hotel is run by a wonderful, young couple, who, along with their staff, made us feel right at home. We stayed in the “family room,” which consisted of two sleeping areas – one with a double bed, and the other with a bunk bed that our two daughters shared – as well as a separate bath and shower. The accommodations were spacious, charming, and clean. Breakfast was available for an additional fee (not particularly cheap), but was very good and had lots to offer beyond croissants and coffee. We enjoyed an excellent dinner eating “al fresco” at the hotel restaurant on our anniversary, and it was nice to end evenings with other guests in the homey, downstairs living area. One night in particular, there was a large crowd gathered to watch the World Cup soccer finals.

The only issue we had during our three-night stay was that there was no air conditioning. This would normally not be a problem, except that we arrived in the middle of a heat wave, and the rooms were very hot. Once the weather cooled, the room was back to normal and quite comfortable. The hotel has a small pool in the back (that we had to access through a back hallway by the restaurant’s kitchen – a little awkward, but not a big deal), and this was a nice break for kids, especially during the really toasty days. I would also caution that rooms facing the street can be noisy -- not from activity or people in the streets, but from trucks that seem to constantly run along the main road late at night.

The area around Beynac is fabulous and filled with lots to do and see. Besides hiking up to the castle to enjoy the breathtaking views and a really fascinating castle tour, we canoed along the Dordogne River, which was very convenient because there was a bus that transported us to the start and then we finished right across from the hotel; strolled and played along the river; and visited the nearby (but tricky to find) prehistoric cave paintings at Font de Gaume, as well as the charming (and touristy) town of Sarlat. Ballooning seems to be popular in the Dordogne, and there’s a place to arrange a ride right across from the hotel. We decided not to spend the $500 or so dollars it would have cost, but have regretted it since.

In our opinion, three days in Beynac was not enough. We look forward to many more – and longer – visits to this beautiful area of France. And next time, we’ll do the balloon ride!

Our room was clean and comfortable with space for our cases and a large bathroom and was good value for the tariff they charge. We were concerned when we arrived about street noise, but once we closed the double gazed window the noise was minimul. There is very little noise or traffic after 6.30 pm when the tourists have departed (we were able to leave our window open all night). The new owners and the staff are very cheerful and helpful. They offer a good selection of food at the buffet breakfast with boiled eggs, cereals and yoghourt to supplement the bread and croissants. Beynac is only a small village but there is a Post Office, ATM, Tourist Office and bakery as well as a choice of restaurants. Our favourite was called The Small Tunnel (in French of course). The chateau is well worth a visit and the walk up is interesting with several good shops and some bars to quench the thirst from the walk.

The hotel is situated in Beynac et Cazenac, one of the 'Villages de Charme" that dot the Dordogne River. It is nestled beneath the Chateau Baynac, an imposing castle that dates back to the Middle Ages. The hotel itself dates back to the Middle Ages and its accommodation is comfortable and very good value especially when you take the 'half board' of bed and breakfast and your choice of either lunch or dinner. Our host went out of his way to help us in planning the next leg of our travels including the best roads to take and even where the nearest and best petrol stations were situated. The hotel also has a lovely swimming pool.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the side street.

This hotel is in a beautiful location. The room was large and quiet. Unfortunately we were too sick to eat here.
