“Better than we thought!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

We have just returned from Hotel Los Gigantes, Tenerife. Even though we have stayed at this hotel before, we were worried after reading the reviews since it's refurbishment. Our worries were mostly unfounded. On entering the hotel it was very clean, spacious & modern. Our room was large & the white walls & pictures were , in our opinion, fine. The bathroom has not been renovated, the bath is narrow, hence causing problems with the shower curtain. The lack of mirrors is also a major problem. There was a large balcony as well. The only downfall for us was the housekeeping, which seemed to be worse on our floor, the third floor. Talking to other people staying on different floors, they did not encounter the problems we had. Our chambermaid did not sweep our floor, only pulled the bed up, she didn't straighten the sheets or make the bed. One day she completely forgot to clean our room. This was rectified when we complained to the Thomson Rep, but in a four star Hotel I think this is extremely unacceptable & something the Hotel needs to address. The food was fine wiith plenty of choice & the Full Board plan is very good value for money. The entertainment on 5 nights out of 7 was okay, the resident band were very good. The Entertainment Rep seemed a very nice lady, but her skills in her job need perfecting.
The two swimming pools are very good, but you have to get down early to get a sunbed & this is extremely annoying. We would stay at Los Gigantes again & hopefully the Management as well as Thomson will have rectified these few problems.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the town, it was quiet, we had a view of the mountains & the sea.

This is our third visit to this adults-only hotel and on arrival were amazed at its transformation. The hotel has been refurbished and looks very modern, white and contemporary. The view from the terraces, pool and room balconies are of uninterrupted ocean and sky.
Whilst buffets are not my ideal choice of dining, there were many many choices both at breakfast and dinner. As vegetarians we never fare too well at large hotels who assume that salad/fruit//pizza with the occasional pasta is imaginative dining. However, saying that, we certainly had enough food to manage for one week.
The hotel must rate as one of the cleanest and best maintained ever. The Manager is always about, overseeing the running of the hotel and I think it has to be thanks to his presence and diligence, that the hotel has such high standards of cleanliness.
Whilst the clients were predominantly over 65 the atmosphere was lively and friendly. There are entertainers every night in the hotel and after 10pm they have a more polished guest performer who was usually worth seeing.
There are many small bars outside the hotel who offer live music if one likes to have a walk out after dinner. There are also many small cafes offering food at lunch if you need to get out and about.
If there is one thing that I do find annoying it is the waiters in the dining room-they are not, in the main, particularly friendly and rarely if ever, smile. The maitre'de on the other hand is polite, friendly and extremely helpful.
The downside of this hotel is its location - there is no walk that does not involve steep hills. Unlike Los Cristianos and Los Americas who have a superb promenade walk Los Gigantes has only a small rather unattractive harbour to walk down to and that involves a rather steep climb back. If you have mobility problems and enjoy getting out for a walk this is not the place for you.
If at this time of the year you are unable to get a full sea view room do not worry because it can be so hot in the afternoon on the balcony that you are unable to sit out anyway. It also made the room very hot to return to with a rather slow working air conditioner being rather inaffective.
The rooms on the front are cooler and some still have side sea views.
We will certainly return for a weeks rest and relaxation.

Room Tip: 404 and 405 lovely full sea view rooms, large and modern. 414 side sea view - excellent location a...

Fantastic Hotel with great views . The Hotel has obviously benefited from the recent refurbishment.
The majority of guests seemed to have been staying at the Hotel for a number of years , so it felt as though we were the "new kids on the block"
The Restaurant area was an experience, rude waiters who were pre occupied with clearing the tables before you had finished your meal. The meal drinks would often not be be served until the end of the meal which was not ideal.
The Waiter service meal in the beautiful first floor restaurant was so rushed it was untrue, four courses served in one hour!
The Sunbeds at the Hotel pool was another story, queing started at 7.30 am in anticipation for the doors opening at 8.00am. After which it was a free for all as guests scambled for their favoured sunbeds. Clearly threre is not enough beds to accomodate all the hotel guests

Having just returned from our stay in the Los Gigantes Hotel I must say on arrival how impressed we were, the view as you enter reception is wonderful, as was the view from our second floor sea view room. The hotel has recently been refurbished, some of the refurb unfortunately was not to a very high standard, glass balustrades without handrails which were held together by silicone! a glass staircase with no handrail, these would not be allowed in the UK due to H&S. Our room was very nice although minimalist, the bathroomwas dark which is not so good, no mirror in bedroom but I understand this is being addressed. Cleanliness of public areas excellent, pity we couldn't say the same of our room, the floor in our room was cleaned once during our 8 day stay but the balcony not at all. Food was fine, your average buffet, the breakfast very good, some evening meals better than others but we ate out a couple of times. The food was always hot and replenished straight away when trays became empty. What spoiled the experience for us was the staff, apart from Miguel in the bar and the reception staff who always had a smile and passed the time of day I can honestly say I have never come across such rude waiters, it was an ordeal some days, a bit like "Faulty Towers" having your plates snatched from across the table and the wine sloshed into your glass so much so that it spills! all very intimidating. Even the a La Carte night was very rushed, the location on an open air upper terrace was beautiful but it was as though they wanted you gone as quickly as possible and the food was only marginally better than the buffet the previous evening. I know from speaking to some couples who go each year that the staff numbers have drastically reduced, but you know they are being paid, and my view is if you don't like the job, move over and let someone else do it but don't take it out on the people who pay the bills. The entertainment was poor, the hotel is missing a trick as there are two bars on it's doorstep which were full each evening with guests from the hotel listening to some really good singer's whilst the hotel cabaret room was almost empty. This hotel has clients who have been going back each year for 20 years but since the refurb we spoke to some who said they won't go again which is a shame. I personally will be interested to see the difference in November when it becomes a Thomson Couples, hopefully they can install a Thomson animation team to liven the place up somewhat, this hotel could be so wonderful with some good staff in the dining room (you can't call it a restaurant) in fact my husband likened it to a canteen and a good animation team. The quiet pool, was so quiet you could literally hear a pin drop, some relaxing piped music around the pool would have been nice but I understand that was a definte no no from the general manager, as is bingo and dancing, but given that approx 80% of the guests were Brits over 60 what is wrong with a little game of bingo, most of the older ladies would love it and who doesn't like a little bit of a dance on holiday. This hotel could be perfect as the location is superb but we found it soulless, a bit of buzz would do it the world of good. In conclusion, although we did enjoy our holiday and felt very relaxed at this point in time this hotel has not made it onto our return to list.

Oh! just one last thing Thomas the Restaurant manager really should not be kissing the lady guests as they enter the room, nor should he save the terrace tables for his favourites!

Room Tip: We thought our sea view room was wonderful.

Decided to go back to Los Gigantes for our first Autumn break as have just retired. As with most comments we also found most of the guests were older and lots were returning for the umpteenth time. This must be a recommendation in itself. The first impression was very good as the update has made it look much more modern and airy. The rooms were comfortable and it was good to have the TV as we could keep up with the news etc. The rooms weren't spotless but clean enough. There weren't many chambermaids and often the room wasn't made up until late afternoon and on a couple of occasions there were no towels as they were being laundered. However, we found the staff friendly enough but we don't like to be "best buddies" as some guests were, especially with the restaurant staff. We also found the food to be good as there was such a large choice and you could combine anything there so we really don't know how anyone could say that they didn't like the food. We gave the a la carte restaurant a miss as we prefered to choose from the buffets as we don't eat certain foods and that made things so much easier.
We were disappointed to find that there wasn't a kettle or inclusive wi-fi in our room but apparently this is changing from November.
We would recommend this hotel if you enjoy a quiet holiday in stunning surroundings. We had a great time.

We had a really enjoyable week at this hotel had requested a room high up so that we could appreciate the views which are fantastic.
Unlike most of the other holidaymakers this was our first visit so can't comment on what the hotel looked like before and whether this was an improvement but what I will say I don't think the level of workmanship was that great.
As for previous comments about the room cleaning, yes it wasn't that great, I think this is due to that they don't employ enough staff.
We found that some of the staff were exceptional but some were really surly but as I say I think it's mainly due to lack of staff.
You can have a waiter service dining per visit which we were looking forward to, the setting is lovely very romantic but what a let down the food was just plonked on our plates and all courses just one after the other like a conveyor belt, it made us really laugh but one couple after the first course just got up and walked out, the food was also terrible so if we went back would give this a miss.
Beds are comfortable and a bonus to have British TV channels in the room.
We were half board and found the food apart from one night was quite good.
The area around the hotel is really nice a few shops and lots of bars most of which had their own entertainment a little marina with friendly bars/cafe one in particular The funky chicken - food and service both great.
If you can try to do the coastal walk, we walked it to the next two resorts nothing to see in the resorts but the walk is lovely, mind you we got a cab back!
We have been to Tenerife many times but not to this area and would definitely return.
Prevous comments regarding the saving of sunbeds are correct but we had to do the same otherwise probably wouldn't have got one, there are two pools a quieter one which we didn't visit so don't know whether the beds got saved around that one as well, we find this goes on everywhere and used to blame the Germans for it but this hotel was mainly British so it's the Brits doing it!
This hotel has a Thomson rep (Sam) there 6 days a week which was very handy.
I'd say if your under 50 you're probably too young for this hotel - for the week we were there the age group was well over 60.

Room Tip: High up with seaview to appreciate views
