Lots of character in the rooms the bar is a comfortable area to ditch and enjoy the selection of ales and wines. The pub Food is very good if sometimes a bit expensive. Portion size in the main dining area is sometimes on the small side but is very tasty

Had a great evening meal with a group of 6 friends to celebrate a birthday
Staff very attentive and friendly. Had a choice of tables including use of the private dining room. We opted for a round table in front if the open fire. We had the a la carte menu which wasn't too extensive which made is easier to select something suitable. The waiter was very knowledgable about all the ingredients (locally sourced) of each dish and was able to advise in gluten free options without having to check with the chef! He was also able to advise on wine choices to go with our dishes.. Everyone enjoyed there food emmensly so much so it became the topic of conversation in between noises of out enjoyment if the food!
The wait between courses was just right not slow and we didn't feel rushed. We were entertained at one point by a magic card trick from one if the bar/ waiting staff whom also later brought out a banana cake desert complete with a birthday candle on top singing happy birthday, which was completely unprompted and had been organised by the staff.
A 10% tip was included in the hill which we felt was well deserved. A great evening, excellent food and can't wait for an excuse to go back. Maybe for a Sunday lunch which is served up until 8pm!

A nice warm atmosphere, and good food, and luckily for us just down the road. Wonderful large "linen" napkins, at lunch time, a plus for this old fashioned lady that likes to lunch! The menu has a good selection of lighter or more substantial items. Try the pineapple with sweet paprika and chill with a tarragon and lime sorbet, sounds strange, but take it from me it is delicious !

Firstly the positives. Friendly management , welcoming staff, lovely real fire, great wine list and good quality food.
On the negative front yes the fish starters are too small. The restaurant also needs to make a more distinct divide in the restaurant area between family space and more intimate dining. Our romantic meal was spoilt by children running around in this open plan area.
Probably the biggest negative for me was the interior design. For some strange reason the owners have decided to equip the dining area with light teak polished furniture, more suited to a travel lodge than an historic, potentially atmospheric building. This gives the main dining area an almost cafe type interior. The candles help - a bit. I'd be tempted to segregate off this area, pop on some white table linen and try and create a more classy ambience, keeping casual dining in the bar section. I wish them luck as the place does have huge potential but at the moment it seems to have a bit of an identity crisis.
