“Awesome Hostel”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

I've been traveling around Australia by myself for seven weeks, and the Nunnery is my favorite hostel so far! Great atmosphere, nice people, safe, and clean (plus, the free breakfast is awesome). Great location too! I highly recommend it.

The nunnery has to be at the top of my hostel stays so far; great location, beautiful old building full of character which is kept spotless by hard working staff. It has a really nice friendly vibe and whilst there are several long termers, it's not hugely cliquey, this is helped with organised activities and nights out. The rooms were a decent size, could have done with more storage but that's minor. The communal areas were fab, kitchen a little too small though for the size of the place but free breakfast was great. Loved it.

Definitely one of the best hostels I have stayed in. More like a hotel, beautiful big leather sofas, open roaring fire, comfy accommodation - especially the 3 and 4 bed dorms.
Excellent location, 5 mins walk to the trendy Brunswick street and 15 mins to the CBD or just on the tram outside the hostel.
It is quiet, lovely staff and residents. Even food nights where the staff provide food. You must check out the view from near the top also, incredible!
Would definitely recommend this place, and the building inside is beautiful!

Room Tip: Pay a little bit more for for a 3 or 4 bed dorm, much more private and a better night sleep.

Great hostel with location on Nicholson street in a very hipster area with tons of character and shops. The tram runs right in front of the hostel which is great for travellers. Staff is EXCEPTIONALLY AWESOME and really informative. We paid $30 per night and were living in an 8 person dorm. There are other dorms available depending on your price range. Cleanliness was a 10 out of 10, with them cleaning the kitchen 3 times daily. RESPECT. Everything was in great working order. Small hostel, BIG CHARACTER. LOVE IT.

Great location, quiet but close to the city and Brunswick street. Tram to the city and St Kilda as well as the free tourist bus right outside your door. We stayed in the guesthouse and it was worth the extra cost. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Will stay there again.

Good/great:

- Staff is lovely and helpful.
- Good atmosphere
- I met some lovely ladies in the 4 female share dorm

Not so great:
- Quite noisy. Apparently it's very normal that people shout in the hallways all through the night (on Skype for example)
- The bathrooms are old and run down (bring your slippers in the shower if you are sensitive to that)

Room Tip: Choose the rooms in the back, as they are more quiet.

We stayed at this hostel several nights and we were really happy with the quality of this accomodation compared to the two others Backpackers we did in Melbourne.

First, we originally booked 2 beds in a dormitory & get upgraded once arrived ending in a private room with TV. Really good start!

Nothing bad to say about the service and cleanliness of the place. The staff was friendly and very helpful.

In addition, the place is very nice: a group of old buildings, with a courtyard between them. Lovely place!
