This was exactly the kind of holiday my three friends and I were looking for. The region, the landscape, the olive tree lined roads, the proximity of the beaches, the peace and solitude all made it the destination we had discussed and hoped for. What completely exceeded our expectations was this house - more of an enchanting home that a B&B - and our magnificent and in-every-way generous host Rita (who felt more like an old family friend by the end of the five days).
The stone walls and the high ceilings in the house mean that it is the perfect retreat after a long hot day in the sun. It is also fascinating to wander around as it is full of antique furniture, cooking equipment, and old trinkets, and despite its slightly run-down, quaint and old look, it is beautifully clean and well run. There are so many rooms, annexes and alcoves that invariably, except at meal times when we saw other table set for guests, we felt like we were the only ones staying in the house. If it was not for the distractions of cycling trips to the nearby beach and places to explore, the wonderful weather, and most of all Rita's exquisite cooking, I could happily have passed long days stretched out on one of the many chaise longues in one of the many sitting rooms reading a good book in perfect peace and solitude.

Our accommodation also came with four bicycles so that we could get out and about and explore the area. However, when too tired or burn out, Rita was graciously there to pick us - and bicycles up - in her car. She generously recommended and drove us to an amazing restaurant in the adjoining town one evening, and gave us a tour of a nearby fascinating town and as picking us up from and taking us to the airport at the end of our holiday. Her cooking surpassed that of any restaurant. Not only did freshly made quassants and pan au chocolate and apple strudel come as part of a delicious and fancy breakfast every day, but if we did wish to stay in for lunch or dinner we only had to say and she made the most miraculously wonderful meal. I have to say, her focaccia is the best I have eaten and I think I would go back just for that!!

I can honestly say that I would have no hesitation in recommending this as a holiday destination for groups of friends such as ours, newly weds or couples in search of a romantic break (it would be very romantic indeed), and families (the family staying there at the same time as us seemed to be in their element and I know as a child I would have thought it an idyllic heaven with the beach so close by and the house and surrounding grounds so large for playing in).
n.b the house also had broadband wireless for those like my friend who could not leave lap top and work completely at home!

We were looking for a peaceful place to relax for a few days in the sunshine, to eat well and go to the beach. The holiday was this and so much more because of Rita, our wonderful hostess. I have never stayed at a guest house that felt like staying with family. I didn't realise that places like this existed. Not only was Rita kind and generous, she catered to our rhythm which really made me feel at home; we weren't stuck to regimented breakfast times for example. On top of all that she is an exceptional cook, I've never tasted focaccia like hers, which made meal times something to really look forward to. The house is beautiful and preserves so much of her family's history and the house is set in perfectly rustic southern italy. I can't wait to go back.

Our hostess Rita Guastamacchia continues the work of generations of her family in keeping this now disused olive mill alive. To describe this as a B&B is doing Masseria Serra dell'Isola a grave disservice: the quality here is exceptional in so many ways. The interiors are large, welcoming and full of historic interest. The service from Rita comes with true warmth. The food is ample and gorgeous (Rita runs cookery schools also.) We asked in advance if it was possible to have dinner too - no problem - and a several course journey through some wonders of the regional food of Puglia awaited us. The grounds of the house are a little shabby but to focus on that is to miss the point of this place completely: it is somewhere to indulge in peace and pleasure. Above all it has that rare quality these days: it has soul. Thank you Rita.
