Agriturismo Il Mulinum
Ranked #3 of 4 Porlezza B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 10, 2013

We (with wife and son of 9 years) had an excellent stay at Il Mulinum. Our room was very large and very well appointed with modern fixtures and furniture. It was a great contrast with the ancient mill superstructure. The staff were excellent. The food was great. The location was wonderful, both on the "micro" scale (the last structure in a river valley leading away from Porlezza and thus very quiet and immersed in nature) and a more "macro" scale (comfortable for visiting both Lake Como and Lugano). The prices were very reasonable. The breakfast was not outstanding relative to places further to the north in Europe, but certainly was above the Italian average.

Room Tip: Our room had some pluses, but one minor minus. It was a large room and had a private terrace/balcony...

the good comments at tripadvisor i just can confirm, we enjoyed it very much, very friendly owner, good cuisine, our daughter (15 month) very much liked the white fish, she ate the whole portion by herself, good wines for very decent money, very good price = value, clean comfortable rooms unfortunately we had it not the the little river passing by but still very quite and relaxing, rooms very modern, with safes, minibar, electrical keycards much better than i have seen in many 4* hotels. breakfast good for italian standards.
owner very friendly
thanks a lot, we will come back and recommend you

The food, service and accn were excellent. Even though it was a little difficult to find (we were travelling on a motorbike with a GPS that had a mind of its own) the staff couldn't do enough to help us. We'd had a spill on the motorbike and with my broken finger they couldn't help us enough and fixed me up enough to keep travelling. Fantastic views from our room and the restaurant. It's located beside a small river that is so beautiful and with the water flowing past and the sound of the church bells every now and then, it's a wonderful Italian destination. The food was lovely and the wine list was very good too. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a river view and balcony

Il Mulinum is a good location to visit both Como's Lake and Lugano's Lake. It is located close to Porlezza.
The Agriturismo is very comfortable and the owners are very professional and kind. You can have a look to the gear of an old water mill. Il Mulinum is located close to a little river that produce a good "music" to sleep and to wake up.
The room are big and clean.
The ratio qulity/price is good also for the restaurant.
One of the owner (Gingo) is also a very good painter.

Room Tip: If you travel with all the Family ask for Rooms 203 or 204.

This hotel literally sits on the bank of a storybook river. Wherein one hears the melodious sounds of the water, all day and all night. Add to that the nearby church bells and you have a setting directly out the 17th century.

If that is not enough try the restaurant where the Chef hails from 4 and 5 star Swiss restaurants. His pasta dishes are handmade daily and are some of the best I have enjoyed in the world.

The rooms are modern and clean. It is the best hotel in the region.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the river.

We planned to stay in Porlezzo, because we wanted to visit family who rented a vacation home in this town at the Lake of Lugano. We decided to choose this small hotel because of the good reviews. We booked for 7 days including breakfast for a good rate.

Unfortunately, it started with some issues after we arrived. We had room nr. 102 which is in the back on the first floor. To our pleasant surprise, there was a huge balcony on the roof of the kitchen, measuring about 30 x 10 feet. The bad thing: the vent of the kitchen (a very large one) has been built on our balcony. When the cook is present (from 10 a.m. till about 11 p.m.), it produces a nasty noise like a stationary running car. I think, this is really a design mistake. Because of that, you can hardly sit on the balcony and listen to the river running by.
The second issue was that after taking the first shower, the floor was completely flooded. So, I took a look in the drain and found a huge hairball and more dirt. Clearly, this had not been cleaned in a long time. After inspection of the whole room it turned out that it was also quite dusty e.g. on the closet, refrigerator etc.
After this, we decided to leave the next day. The owner was disappointed but understood. Nevertheless, he let the shower cleaned, so the flooding issue was gone.

The next day, we decided to stay because of numerous positive reasons:
- The location is absolutely wonderful: at the rear and of Porlezza, at the local river. It is the last house and there are lovely views on the mountains and the river. Take a look at some of the pictures. The terrace and garden are large and superb. There is an unpaved road following the river into the canyon, which is beautiful. This ends up at a small hydropowerplant.
- The owner and other people working there are very friendly and helpful, although they almost do not speak any english of german.
- The breakfast is good, but lunch and dinner our outstanding. With a lovely menu e.g. risotto, pasta's, fish, meat, gnocchi. Good wines too. And inexpensive as well. Actually, this is more a restaurant than a hotel.
- The building is fantastic. It has been completely renovated and looks beautiful. And modern too. There is also lots of art and the standard of the rooms is great with airconditioning, modern bathroom, locker, good beds, wooden ceiling and floor of natural stone. A small disadvantage is, that is is a little noisy.

After all, we enjoyed our staying here very much. It could be 5 stars IF the housekeeping is strongly improved. And it would even be better if in the future the vent of the kitchen will be changed.
If you don't want this noise, take rooms on the riverside, e.g. room 104, 105 or 106.

Room Tip: Take a room on the riverside, e.g. 104, 105, 106 or on the second floor.

We planned on staying in Menaggio for our visit to Lake Como, but couldn't find anything suitable since we came off season. But we had a rental car so we could stay a little further away. The Agriturismo Il Mulinum in Porlezza was about 20 minutes drive to the lake shore. The hotel's location is fantastic, right next to a stream at the base of a hill. It is tucked at the end of a small side street, so you may find a GPS helpful when trying to locate the hotel.

We stayed in the upstairs corner room with balcony. There is an elevator in the hotel, an unexpected feature that most small hotels and pensions in Italy lack. The room furnishing was simple and modern, very clean and comfortable. Even though the running stream was right outside, the doors and windows did a very good job of shielding out the noise.

The dining room downstairs was very spacious. Breakfast was included with the room rate and consists of a good spread of bread, cheese, meats, juice and coffee. We learned that the paintings on the walls at the lobby were actually done by the owner himself.

In summary, a very nice pension if you are visiting Lake Como and have your own transportation.

Room Tip: Upstairs corner room faces the stream and has two balconies.
