“A treat in Umbria”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

My daughter and I greatly enjoyed our 2-night stay with Gabriel & Anna. They were gracious hosts and made our stay very special. Gabriel cooked us a delicious dinner on our first night and breakfasts were lovely, too. We loved the atmosphere of this tucked-away home in the heart of Umbria, especially the pool and nearby walking path. Would love to visit again!

I had the pleasure of staying here with my wife and friends recently. Casale San Bartolomeo is a unique family owned residence which is close to the tourist locations yet seemed to be miles away from the madding crowd. It location is unique off the main road down a dirt track which concerned me on my way to the house, but on arrival all my concerns disappeared. The location and setting is fantastic and so quiet. While basic it was well worth the stay and allowed us all to chill in tranquillity which Italy is not associated with. Gabriele and his wife Ana are so helpful and gave us great recommendations. For a complete switch off in a great remote location this is highly regarded.

My husband and I went on a two week trip to Italy, part of which we stayed 3 nights in Casale San Bartolomeo from 01 May 2013 to 04 May 2013. Our time here with Gabriele and Ana really stands out as one of our best experiences in Italy, and we do need to add: our entire Italy trip was pretty much awesome!

Gabriele and Ana have really established a very unique, unforgettable and truly Italian B&B which I am sure no other place in Italy will be able to compete with. First of all, getting to meet these two people is already a great experience and actually such an honour. They are so helpful, friendly, and have really made us feel at home in Casale San Bartolomeo - the place felt like home. We had some issues with our rental car company and Gabriele couldn't have gone more out of his way to assist us with getting everything sorted out. In addition, his recommendations on the places in the area to visit were really good and well worth visiting. Especially our trips to Todi and Deruta were unforgettable, and not to mention the wine farm Castello Monte Vibiano Vechhio - truly worth a vist. Gabriele also assisted us with our washing, which was really helpful in that we didn't have to go look for a laundromat in the area - we also did not even have to pay for it.

Also, the location is unbelievable. I could barely believe what I saw when we drove up to the Casale. The views are amazing. We had the most stunning view from the window in our room and views from the patio whilst having dinner are spectacular.

The room we stayed in was lovely. It was clean, spacious and nothing short of comfortable.

Last but not least: Gabriele is a wonderful cook! After reading all the reviews on Tripadvisor, we decided to definitely have dinner at least once at the Casale - and after our first dinner there, we decided to have all the rest of our dinners there as well! Gabriele's food is out of this world. It was definitely once again one of the best we had during our time in Italy and the care, time and effort that Gabriele puts into his cooking really comes out through a great eating experience. He doesn't hold back on anything and the 4-course meal we enjoyed each night was truly unforgettable. The wine was included in the EUR25 per person, which on its own, was a bonus!

If you want a truly Italian experience, with none of the typical tourist traps but truly great hospitality, awesome food, beautiful views and a stunning location, this place is a MUST. We will definitely go to Casale San Bartolomeo again. Try it, you will DEFINITELY not regret it!!!

Its very difficult to put into words how much I loved this holiday. I can say hand on heart despite having visited quite alot of Italy that this was one of my favourites and I think our stay at Casale Bartolomeo made it. I cannot speak highly enough! I would recommend this accomodation to anyone. The property is very beautiful, clean and comfortable. Gabriele & Anna are wonderful hosts that make you feel very welcome and comfortable and they get the balance right of leaving you to it but making sure you know where they are if you need them. Gabriele was kind enough to offer advice on the best places to visit and the best places to eat. We did eat out on 5 of the 9 nights that we stayed here for but found that despite having some lovely meals out the food we ate didn't compare with Gabriele's. It was very relaxing to sit on the terrace watching the sun go down over the hills and the birds singing while enjoying local Umbrian dishes.I am vegetarian and I didn't want to seem awkward but Gabriele couldn't have done more to make me feel catered for. Breakfast again was lovely, sat on the terrace. There was plenty of choice at breakfast time - from yoghurt, cereal, toast, coffee, tea, fresh fruit juice.

We stayed in Camera Con Vista which also was a beautiful room with a very comfy bed. I loved the views from the room overlooking the garden, pool and the rolling hills surrounding the property. It was so quiet, peaceful and relaxing. I could have sat and looked at the view and listened to nothing but the birds forever. I just felt completely relaxed for the entire stay. In the evenings we enjoyed sitting on the terrace. If you eat at Casale San Bartolomeo you get a bottle of water and wine with your meal which Gabriele replenished until you had finished your meal (you certainly wouldn't find this service in a hotel) we bought some drinks for the room from the local Conad supermarket in Marsciano. A few nights my boyfriend and I went into the living room where we would read or watch television. There are a selection of DVD's in the living room and plenty of books to borrow during your stay. As I have said I cannot speak highly enough. It was just wonderful. Every aspect of our stay was perfect. The house has a lovely, happy and loved feel to it and I very much enjoyed my stay here and wish I could be back there!

The location is great too - very central for visiting the nearby towns. We picked a Fiat Panda up from the airport. My boyfriend found driving really easy and it was good to have the freedom to come and go as you please and be able to nip to the supermarket to stock up on water etc. A Fiat Panda is probably not the best car considering some of the hills and the stone drive upto the house but the car didn't let us down and we managed. If you are hiring a car though it might be better to spend a little more and get a better car. We visited Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Orvieto, Spoleto, Montefalco, Marsciano, Castigliano Sul Lago (Tresimeno), Passignano (Tresimeno), Gubbio - all beautiful in their own right. I am happy to offer advice on the best places to visit if need be. As I said earlier Gabriele will advise if need be too. He's very helpful and king enough to print off some addresses and contact details for restaurants with directions, without having to ask.

Having visited alot of popular tourist locations in Italy we found Umbria fairly cheap. I enjoyed visiting places you would normally see on postcards without the hustle and bustle of other tourists. It was nice to see how the locals live. The landscape is breathtaking and I felt like a character in a book! One sunny evening we nipped to the supermarket and went on a picnic. It was just lovely.

I could go on but all in all this was a wonderful, wonderful holiday. Gabriele, Anna, Giorgia, Giulglia (and the cats) are one of the nicest families you could wish to meet!Always there when you need them, but leaving you to relax and enjoy your holiday and have your own space at the same time. I can't wait to return one day.

Both Umbria and Casale San Bartolomeo have a special place in my heart and I would like to say thank you to the family for making us feel so welcome and at home. It's just perfect!

If you choose to stay here you won't regret it. You certainly won't find the same experience in a hotel.

Thank you Gabriele and Ana for making our holiday so special! xxx

Room Tip: I am sure all rooms are consistently beautiful but we stayed at Camera Con Vista and it was perfect.

We stayed at Casale San Bartolomeo for 4 nights. this is by far the best, most enjoyable place we stayed in during our visit to Italy, and the others where considerably more expensive. 3 reasons for that: (a) location location location - Casale San Bartolomeo is less than 15 minutes away from the highway. It's about an hour drive from eveyr major spot in Umbria - Assisi, Peruja, Orvieto. It is close to villages (where you can visit the Monday market, have dinner in a restaurant or withdraw money from a bank) - and yet it's completely quiet and away from the noise. It takes a 750 mr. drive on a dirt road (well kept!) to get there, and when you stop the engine - you're surrounded by nature and hear the singing of birds. Fabulous; (b) The house, yard and rooms are great. It has all the comfort and yet it is not flashy. The garden is full of flowers. There's a swimming pool in the yard (early October was already a bit cold to use it). A reading room is situated at the first floor as well as a dining room. The bedrooms are the second floor. Ours was just the right size, with two windows. A table was missing, but other than that - perfect; (c) Gabriele, the owner: he is friendly, landing a helping hand in case of need (we asked for his assistance with the rental car company and he gladly helped), gives great advise about the area (wineries to visit, restaurants to dine in, market days, places to visit etc.) - and he's doing that without being pushy. On top of that - he is a chef, who's willing (for 25 Euro/person) to cook dinner for you, and he really excels in that. Don't miss it. Again, perfecto.

We'd love to come back anytime. Don't think twice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view ("camera con vista") - the only room with two windows

We stayed at Casale San Bartolomeo for three nights in July. The place is wonderful, peaceful, relaxed and with the added bonusof a pool. It is also very well placed to visit areas of interest in Umbria (of whihc there are plenty!)

Gabriele & Ana are wonderful hosts, and given we have a young family we opted to eat at the casale each night of our stay, which proved to be a great decision. The kids played with gabriele & ana's kids whilst we sat on the terrace and drank good wine and ate delicious food prepared by gabriele.

All in all a great stay and we wish we could have stayed longer, but hopefully we will be back. Thank you also to Gabriele for locating and posting to us the kindle that we left behind!

Haven't even slept here yet but know already that this is a great place . Pool is fantastic. Country side is beautiful and way peaceful. Smells coming from the kitchen, for our dinner we decided to opt for this evening, are enticing. We are looking forward to the tastes which I am sure will prove to be superb. If ther is anything negative to report, I will. But, so far this is a winner.
