We paid out the extra for the Premium Suite from the get go so we had no problems what so ever. New modern marble bath and smaller but really nice suite with fridge and private balcony over looking the mountains. Tip daily in USD and our room was immaculately cleaned. House keepers extremely nice though no one spoke English which is fine as you are in South America afterall.
Pool on the premium side was nice but my suggestion is to close it off to children. There are 3 pools in total at the resort. 1 of them should be adult only so they can lounge pool side without all the noise from children.
Premium Restaurant Tilapia was not a canteen as a poster claimed. It was simple constructed to be understated with clean lines and openess. The food was not what you would have at a typical resort. Again, you are in South America now and they cultural infuence was stated in the food offered which was not bad at all. The service we found at the Tilapia Bar & Grill was best of the 3 resturants so we frequented that one and forgot about the others.
Premium Bar Shabono had the best drinks of all the bars. Went for pre dinner cocktails and after dinner. If you want a party destination this is not the resort for you. Its very quiet and extremely peaceful overall. We loved how sprawled out this place was and how low key it presented itself. Its like a small village of it it's own.
Again, previous poster shows phots of a poorly kept tour bus but ours was brand new.
We took the Jeep Tour through the SunWing rep and worth every penny. Great way to explore the island and the diversity of the land and lagoon by boat. All the tours were offered in English & French which was great.
The people at the resort including the security gaurds were all exremely friendly. There is little spoken english but they manage and so did we.
None of the beaches on the island are privately owned. We enjoyed the beach. Once in awhile venders would try to sell jewelery etc...but a polite no thank you and they leave you be the rest of your stay. The waves were huge...huge but alot of fun for everyone it seemed.
Highly recommend Dunes Hotel Beach Resort. If you want a private on the down low vacation at a decent price then go for it. Again, book the premium and pay the extra-its worth it.

Room Tip: Premium Section Only. It is worth the extra charge-trust me.

I dread to think what the other hotels are like if this is number 1
Reception and Rooms After getting an upgrade are ok but still basic.
Staff are nice rooms kept clean and the sea was good fun BUT that is all
seen better 2 star in India,
Food was horrid and main Pool was dirty round the edge
Fumigation was around 16.00 hrs when people where still in the pool
Don't get dressed up for your evening meal as you feel a right Idiot drinking out of plastic vending machine cups in the bar.
The Premium restaurant was more like a canteen,
And the shuttle bus had a lot to be desired.
Cannot believe what people have been writing as reviews on this page,
This hotel is a total no no
Was I staying in the same Dunes Hotel Isla Margarita as many of the previous reviews

we too, being accommodated in the older part of the hotel had to ask to change room and eventually we got a better room where we did have more than 1 meter distance between the wall and the double bed.
the rooms and bathrooms are basic and relatively clean, but never forget you get what you pay for and think of how much your package costed. Considering the island is still one of the cheapest caribbean destinations and the overall infrastructures on the island, it's alright.
Think of visiting the newest part of the hotel, where the restaurant has air conditioning. The huge pool is pleasant but needs to be painted. The all-inclusive drinks are served in white plastic glasses that occasionally are forgotten by the pool by the clients/cleaners. Food is ok. The beach restaurant is pleasant because it's only a few meters from the beach.

The hotel has direct access to a beautiful beach, however the sea is quite rough and waves can be big and not particularly welcoming for a bath. But a short taxi ride from the hotel you can go to the lovely playa El Manzanillo if you arrive around 11 - 13:00 you might even see the fisherman bring back their nets to the beach full of fishes, there you can definitely go for a nice swim and even have lunch in a small restaurant by the beach.

If you have a spare 24h and 300USD and are not afraid of flying on small planes, I strongly recommend you take the excursion to paradise archipelago of Los Roques. For us it really was the highlight of our trip.

We stayed here in the end of February 2010. Although this resort was clean, spacious and extremely friendly staff there is potential for so much more. The rooms are great and maid service amazing but the newer part of the resort feels too far away from main area. We looked at rooms in older section and although a bit outdated they were no different then ours. I will say the main pool area boring (square pool nohing to look at) the newer area pool much better. We spent most of our time at beach. There is a strong current and huge waves the red flag is posted very day definitely not for small children as I saw grown adults get stucked in and bathing suits twisted away. The food was lacking to say the least. Absolutely no variety. I guess thats why the drinks were so strong to make up for it. The a la carte was the only exception. Marcos was an amzing rep gave lots of info always available and super friendly.

We did the jeep safari of the whole island probably the most fun ever. Well worth the money. Not for those who like a calm quiet ride. DId go into flea market and pearl shop (amazing deals) Also took taxi to playa la aqua beach for the day was super fun (buckets of beer, drinks served to you on beach) and our taxi driver was great.

Although we had fun (thanks to the 2 couples we met) I have to wonder what it could. I would recommend this for older couples and definitely not children.

Room Tip: Don't bother to spend extra for newer section.

Started out at another hotel but got food poisoning and left it to come here. We paid the nolitour rep an extra few bucks to get the higher end room with the private pool and restaurant. The room itself was immaculate but very tiny. It still gave us all we needed with flat screen tv, new bathroom with multi function shower wall unit and nice balcony. Private restaurant where we could eat buffet in peace from the larger buffet at the main building. The main pool was dirty and hard to access, but ours was new clean and with a little bridge. The booze ran freely. The games and events were nonstop and the animation team was fabulous. We went as a couple and left the kids at home but it would have been a good play to bring the kiddies as there was alot of activities and a separate area with playground. The place is massive with buses running every 10 minutes to tote you around. The trips to the big city for shopping were just a few bucks and well worth it. The beach was great which seemed to go on for ever. The water is too rough for the little ones but lots of nice sand. The American buck went far here buying lots of pearls, silver leather and other trinkets. The food was very good for the island (as this is the third place we have been to on this island. All in all the people were great, the tours were cheap (bought from hotel) and you have to get to coche island as it is unbelievable. Vacations are what you make of them. If you have a good outlook you will have fun. If you are a complainer you will find something to complain about

Room Tip: request upgrade, worth the xtra 40$

We went to this hotel the first time. Upon arrival the hotel looked great, we checked in, went to our room, but the room given was not fully cleaned and also had Ants. The next day we were moved to the VIP section of the Hotel , with great view of the mountains. I have lived in the Caribbean before so i know not to expect the perfect room and all, but it was clean and the food was good. Compared to other places there was plenty full f everything , specially salad and no iceberg, no romaine. The beach restaurant was good, either we had the choice of buffet or al la cart, the beach itself was great though due to the current that time of the year we had lost 50 % of the beach in depth , but with time it dod come back. The personel was friendly and help full. All in all i would go back to the hotel

Room Tip: Book the VIp for 50 bucks more , it gives you one extra restaurant and the Matt for the beach chair...

We stayed at the Dunes February 2011. Weather was good, but a bit more rain than they expect. When I say rain, I mean for a few minutes at a time. The island apparently has more than 300 days of sunshine a year, so thats why we chose to go there in February. We wanted hot and sunny to get away from the February blahs lol.

Had a pretty good time. Met some great people. I recommend upgrading to the better room. Its away from the main part of the hotel with your own buffet restaurant. The people at the main part could only eat at their buffet, so it was very crowded, where ours wasn't.

I would say the service was fine, not too much of a wait at the bars, always lots to drink. The beer at the bar near our part of the resort was actually bottled beer, not draught!

We didn't go to any shows, so can't comment on that. The prices for things like taxi's are really good. And with it being a very small island, you can go pretty much anywhere inexpensively.

Note that off the resort, very few locals speak english.

I would go back for sure!

Room Tip: If possible get the upgraded room.
