“a culinary jewel in Slovenia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2012

We stopped at restaurant Pavus at Grad Tabor Castle during a hiking trip. We had lunch and drinks on the terras with an amazing view on the nearby mountains and the valley. We were surprised by the creativity of the dishes. Especially the entrees and desserts are creative and surprising compositions with delicately combined flavours and textures (frozen foie gras, wasabi ice cream, walnut panna cotta, ...). We sat on the terras which is the inner court of the castle. We had such a good time that we returned twice during our stay in Lasko. This restaurant brings very good value for money. The service was perfect.

“Worth visiting, for views and for food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2012

Superbly positioned in a rebuilt medieval castle in the middle of nowhere; except for businessmen visiting the strong local brewery and holding, and a few tourists in the local spa, the chef can not expect hoards of foodies passing by. Just the few Slovenians checking regularly culinary happening, and watching the flight to (national) fame of the young generation of chefs, all blessed with Michelin starred apprenticeship, high ambitions and great will to succeed.

Large enough parking lot in front of the castle, fine canvas-covered terrace with neat bathrooms in the cellar. Lavishly redecorated tower hosts the restaurant on two floors, offering another set of properly, if not lovingly kept bathrooms. Wine list notably short with some 70 entries – we are talking about a high level restaurant, nothing below, so one would expect either more variety or some verticals, as well as more international wines; too much emphasis on the local off dry favorites. Markups not crazy, but far from encouraging - in line with most of the restaurants in the country competing in the same class. Still, considering location, one would expect a more Italian approach, luring guests into higher consumption… Service warm, friendly and helpful, with a single faut pas of not removing extra table sets.

Cuisine could be described as modern based on local traditions – with moderate use of high-tech. Slightly disappointing in the beginning (excessive use of PacoJet in cold entrees in my humble opinion), a truly superb warm entree, a very good main course and again a delightful desert. Al l in all, 15+ on a scale to 20 for the food alone. The young chef definitely has potential to further improve.

I am used to getting an amuse bouche when going to relatively classy restaurants, as well as some compliments from the chef following the desert – pralines or the like. Specially when a tasting menu (8 courses) is ordered. None here. The restaurant is definitely not invitingly cheap at 50 EUR per menu, so this detail did bother me. Unlike his colleagues at the tourist Mecca of Bled, I am afraid he will find it ever tougher to find suitable guests at such prices in the deepening national economic crisis. Few of those who can afford are willing to, ever fewer of those willing to are still able to afford.

Nevertheless, I strongly recommend the place to all foodies passing through Laško, or coming within a few miles from it. Additionally, just a drink on the terrace above the valley must also be a romantic experience in a summer evening.

“Tastes, scenery, atmosphere - it's all there! :)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2012

A spontaneous decision to choose this place for dinner has certainly become one of our best decisions in two-week long trip to Slovenia. The atmosphere of the castle courtyard, the scenery to enjoy while sitting at the table that is also part of castle wall, the fantastic staff taking care of us and, of course, the food - it all made the dinner unforgettable experience and the check at the end was surprisingly smaller than we expected after all we got.

“Overrated”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2011

Expensive and not entirely up to previous reviews. Food is provintially overambitious, wine card is full of holes and at the end - it is pricey. Completely not something that we expected following previous reviews. Maybe those were written byvthe staff
