Having stayed one night on the way back from visiting family, we were very impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of all the staff at The Cottage in The Wood. The hotel is an interesting mixture of old and new, and it has a fantastic location with amazing landscape views. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and will definitely go back!

We usually choose chain rather than family run hotels but the reviews we read swayed us to try it and we were not disappointed. Every single member of staff gave us really excellent service and we enjoyed our short stay. The views really are quite spectacular and the thoughtful extra touches such as binoculars in the room and little bottles of real, not UHT milk also made a difference. Even the ladies loo had discreet complementary extras to save you from those embarrassing moments when you get caught short and need to publically do battle with those hideous slot machines! Refreshingly there was also a no mobile phone policy in the bar and restaurant which meant real conversation with our teenagers! All food is freshly cooked to order and was truly delicious. I ate filo baked goats cheese with walnut salad and baked figs drizzled with oozy honey, the textures were perfect and it tasted delicious. My partner had the pressed meats which were also very good. I opted for plain and simple haddock risotto which was tasty and filling. Portion sizes were just right, the food fresh and tasty. Sadly I did not have the room for a dessert as well.
I don't think I have ever stayed at anywhere that is so quiet at night, perched on the hillside looking out over the immense valley with a few twinkling lights it really was almost spookily silent. The public areas were also very peaceful, a little too much so for us at times- some background music would have been welcome especially when you could hear nearby diners chewing away.
There is free wi-fi, also refereshing as most places charge a fortune nowadays. The TV's in the rooms are a little on the small side but this is not really a place for watching TV but chilling out or walking up the Malvern hills filling your lungs with fresh air and enjoying with their amazing views. The hotel is made up of 3 different buildings, we stayed in the Pinnacles but there is also a cottage which groups can hire out completely. There are no lifts but with only 3 storeys this place has a very homely feel. The approach to the hotel is up narrow windy roads, luckily the recent ice and snow were almost gone when we arrived, it would have been quite a scary drive otherwise!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, (we had room 34 which was amazing) and also check room rates online as y...

How interesting that you broke from your usual habit of staying in chain hotels. Individual hotels are more of a gamble I admit but can yield some real finds. With review sites such as Trip Advisor you can get some really good up to date information about a hotel which reduces that element of risk, which is one of several reasons that I welcome them. Delighted we did not disappoint. Regarding snow - yes it can be a problem but we are very good at clearing our driveway and order ample supplies of rock salt in the Autumn time. The only problem can be the public lane leading to our drive and I'm in discussion with the County Council on this issue. Many thanks for your review. John

My wife and i stayed here in march when the weather was very cold , however the hotel was lovely and warm as was the reception when we arrived , what a lovely hotel it has been owned by the same family for twenty years and most of the staff are part of the family, every one was most friendly and nothing was two much trouble, the bedroom was very clean and confortable
everything was thought of including binoculars in every bedroom, also sticking plasters, sewing kit etc, we stayed when it snowed and without asking the staff all helped to dig us out. we would fully recommend staying at this delightful hotel and we cannot wait to go back

Boy was it cold when you were with us. Glad we managed not only to keep you warm but also dig you out from that unseasonal fall of snow. We are well versed in keeping the hotel open - the only possible problem being the public lane that leads to our driveway - I'm in discussions with the County Council on that issue. I'm pleased that nothing seemed too much trouble - that's what we are here for. A fellow hotel has a good philosophy which I adopted which is "The answer is YES ...now what's the question?" That's how it should be. Many thanks for your comments. John

Myself and my husband stayed here for one night in one of the rooms in the Pinnacles. The room itself was very large with extra seating and a nice big bathroom. The view from the window was breathtaking and if the weather had been nicer it would have lovely to sit outside.
We had our evening meal at the restaurant with pre drinks in the bar area. The food could not be faulted and the wine was very nice too.
The breakfast was excellent ,really fresh with lots of choices.
The staff were friendly enough but tended to keep their distance which might suit some guests but not others.
This was a very beautiful place to stay with the location making it very special. We will defintely return once the weather warms up and the sun comes out!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay despite the unseasonal weather. Do bring some warmth when you make your return visit. Pleased too that you enjoyed the food, both dinner and breakfast. I always think that breakfast is an important meal and it's all too often given scant regard by hotels. Thank you for the review. John

It was our fifth annual visit in March and yet again The Cottage lived up to our expectations. It never has disappointed. From the booking experience where there was no problem postponing the visit from Feb to March. to the arrival where we were, as always, greeted cheerily and made to feel at home immediately. We have stayed in the house, Beech Cottage and the Pinnacles and have always had clean and comfortable rooms. The restaurant served excellent food with impeccable service. We usually come for my partner's birthday, but this was made extra special as we got engaged whilst we were staying; thus ensuring that The Cottage will always be special to us.

Room Tip: Cosy in Beech Cottage, fantastic views from the Pinnacles

My wife have stayed at Cottage In The Wood for short breaks many times over the last 15 years. We are fairly discerning and well-travelled, yet never tire of it. The location, views and access to the Malvern hills are great but would be meaningless without the care, friendliness and quiet professionalism of the family and staff there. The hotel is charming the decor has been updated regularly, there is nothing tired about it and everything is to a good standard. The food is always well though out and well executed. There is also a very comprehensive drinks and wine list. I am sure we will be back to stay in a few more months when it isn't so cold, though the grounds did a good impersonation of Narnia.

Room Tip: All rooms are to a good standard

It was just like Narnia, you are right. In fact I remarked to Sue my wife as we drove up the drive how similar it was. Then I started shovelling! It's also very gratifying that you have been staying with us for 15 years. Shows you are either an poor judge or that we are getting most things right!!! Consistency is the challenge, year in year out. We are only as good as our last meal. Thank you for your comments about us and the team, much appreciated. See you back when the weather warms up. Many thanks for your review. John

The staff were brilliant in their efforts to clear snow during our visit. At the end of the evening, when we had to walk back to our room in The Pinnacles, they walked ahead of us clearing a path in the snow. On the day we had to leave they had cleared the road up to the Hotel, so no problem getting out. Excellent service. Lovely room. Great food. NB Umberalla's there waiting for use, if needed when staying in Pinnacle.

I'm very glad the team escorted you back to your room, snow shovels twirling. We get into a real swing when it comes to snow clearance and it was my turn the following morning. Glad you liked the room and the food. Bring some sun with you next time - that would be very welcome. Thank you for your review. John
