We just had a single night stay at the hotel in room 9 in Beech cottage, Super Kingsize double bed, front facing, reasonable views.

http://www.cottageinthewood.co.uk/beech.htm

The room was very nice and the bed comfy and some decent views however there were some issues, nothing too serious but it did let the place down. These were mainly cleaning issues
1. A dirty bath towel left in the bathroom (hanging behind the door) from the previous occupant
2. An open half eaten packet of biscuits again left by the previous occupant.
3. Cob webs on the drapes/ceiling and light fittings.
We never had dinner in the hotel just breakfast which was very nice only let down by the kitchen staff plating it up wrong but this was quickly remedied.
We would recommend the hotel but only at the discounted rate that we found on-line would not have been happy paying the full rate for the room with the issues we had

I think that whatever price you pay, things should be right and we clearly failed here. I hope you mentioned all this at Reception on check-out. After the event all I can do is to apologise to you. We pride ourselves on our high standards and this room clearly had not been checked. No excuse. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. John

We stayed for a 3 day break & agree that the location is stunning & room was immaculately clean.

However the breakfast was very hit & miss - the first day we waited 30 mins for the food to arrive & it was not freshly cooked as the menu said, day 2 was really good & made up for previous day. We did not eat in for dinner so cannot comment on that side of things.

Overall would return for the walks & area.

Maybe staff could be a little more relaxed & less formal.

I was concerned by two of your comments. One the variability of breakfast and the other the staff being too formal. We usually get comments on the friendliness of the team. Returning to the subject of breakfast, we do cook everything freshly but sausages have to be pre-cooked every morning as they would take 15 minutes or so which is not acceptable to guests. Glad that you will return and hopefully the negatives will be overturned. John

We decided to visit the Malverns for the first time and serendipitously chanced upon this hotel via web searches. It was ideal for us as it was situated on the side of the Malverns and accepted dogs. In fact dogs are only accepted in ground floor rooms in the Pinnacles, an annexe 100 yds from the main hotel, This meant we had a large room, entered via a hallway with 2 double built in wardrobes with spotless en suite off. The room had a large, super comfy bed, 2 comfortable armchairs with coffee table, dressing table, hot drinks table, bedside tables and chest of drawers. Large french windows led out onto a little patio with table and chairs which meant we had a 30 mile view across the Severn valley from both inside and outside the room.

We were provided with the usual drinks tray with biscuits, and fresh milk was available from a fridge on the landing if UHTnot desired. Flannels, toiletries, hand cream, tissues etc were also on offer and everything was replenished daily.
As well as hairdryer, ironing board and iron, trouser press, portable heater for if extra heat was required (it wasn't, despite it being a cold February spell), TV and radio, binoculars were supplied to fully appreciate the view - or identify the birds in the numerous trees around, both within the 7 acres of grounds or in the wooded hills in which the hotel is situated. Most impressive were the facilities provided for our dog: dog bed, dog bowl and dog treat provided - and to take her out - it was a 30 sec walk out of the hotel's grounds into surrounding woodland walks.

The staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient, and breakfasts in the restaurant with the same wonderful view as our room were deliciously cooked. My only quibble would have been a wish for some soft fruit or some more grapefruit put out. Mind you - we breakfasted late. We could have asked but didn't.

We ate in the restaurant only one night of our stay as this was a bit pricy for us, but our treat to ourselves for so much walking in the hills was rewarded. The food was imaginative and delicious, thoughtfully prepared and served and made it a meal to remember.

We will be back asap!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the Pinnacles. They are larger and have the view.If you don't like dogs, dogs...

Thank you for your detailed review, I'm delighted you (and the dog) enjoyed your stay. Detail is important and we do try to think of everything so guests can relax. We normally have fresh grapefruit etc at breakfast, so I'm at a loss to know why you found none on your stay. John

We have just stayed for two nights. We were really lucky with the weather, which was sunny and clear. We were able to walk from the hotel onto the Malvern Hills (via the Holy Well) and walked for six hours with the sun shining and birds singing. Came back to a meal which was first class. Same was true of the breakfasts. Welcome was friendly and straight forward - as was our whole experience.

Room Tip: We booked a small room with a view (6) in the main hotel- and what a view it was! We wanted a bath...

We stayed for 7 nights at The Cottage and were not disappointed in any way. The warmth of the welcome from Mrs Pattin (the owner) was great, and we were helpfully escorted to our room in the Pinnacles, the modern annexe to the hotel which is about 100 yards from the main building. Our labrador was made specially welcome with her own doggy-paws rug, bonios and bowl (and most thoughtfully poo-bags provided!). The room was large (room 23) with what proved to be a marvellous view when the mists/snow cleared by day 5!!! The ground floor rooms in the Pinnacles all have small patios with table and chairs which would be lovely when the weather is good. The Vi-Spring 6 foot bed was superbly comfortable, the shower was really powerful and the bath large enough for a good long soak. The rooms are all individually designed, no "one size fits all" here. The little touches that make this hotel special were the provision of binoculars in each front-facing room, and an "emergency kit" of all the things one might have forgotten or suddenly need. Brilliant!

Food was excellent - prepared by the Pattin's son, who is a master chef in his own right - modern British with a twist, plenty of it and always very freshly cooked, served on very hot plates! We particularly loved the seafood which is fresh daily and brought up from Brixham I believe. The wine list is quite amazing, I have never seen such an extensive one (more than 500 wines) and it made a really informative read. John (Pattin) is a real connoisseur and his love of the subject as well as joie de vivre really comes through.

All members of the team, whether family or not, were very motivated, seemed to be very happy in their work, and nothing was too much trouble for anyone so it made it a real pleasure to stay there for a prolonged stay.

We will certainly return to this gem, and when the weather lifted the views were indeed utterly magnificent!

Room Tip: It's well worth having a room with the view - and as large a room as you can afford if staying f...

Thank you for your detailed review. It's very helpful to me to have a report on a 7 night stay as the consistency of the operation is well and truly tested. I'm glad Sue made you welcome - she loves that side of the business - which leaves Dominic to do the cooking and me to look after the wine list. It is a bit of a passion. We are so lucky in this country to have such a vast selection of wines from all round the world to choose from. It's great to experiment and try things new. I'm sorry to read the early days of the week were misty/snowy but at least it did clear. Beds are as you say, Vi-Spring and they really are good. Not cheap but really good. Hope you will return one day. John

We arrived at reception to be greeted by a very pleasant and efficient young man who showed us to our room after a speedy check in. I had requested a room with a view as it was our wedding anniversary and we got our wish, the view from the first floor room ( room 7) was stunning as was the room itself. The furniture was old fashioned but in keeping with the style of the room, everything you could possibly need was provided for us, including an emerging box of sewing bits and ladies essentials, bottled water and ample tea/coffee/hot chocolate. It really felt like a home from home. The bathroom was lovely with a huge bath and power shower, and gorgeous toiletries provided.everything was spotlessly clean. We ate at the hotel restaurant on the first night and very much enjoyed our meal, I had the hake with curried mussels - yum! And the hubby had the venison which went down very well, but the highlight of the meal was the soup starter OMG who knew that beet root soup could taste so good. Hubby followed with the large cheese board which he thought was a little overpriced at £11.95. Breakfast was ample, my only gripe would be that it would be nice to have the option of vegetarian sausage. The service by the restaurant staff was faultless. It's a shame the weather turned and we never saw the view after our initial glimpse, but the gesture was appreciated and we still enjoyed a fabulous weekend at cottage in the woods. We hope to return sometime.

The weather is the only thing that I can't be held responsible for but I do feel apologetic if it doesn't behave as the views are spectacular as other guest have commented. Happy anniversary by the way - albeit a bit late. Delighted you enjoyed dinner. Dominic comes up with some very interesting soups and I'm glad the beetroot was enjoyed. Many thanks for taking the trouble to post a review. John

We stayed at the Cottage in the wood on Saturday the 9th of February, unfortunately the weather was dreadful, rain and mist all the time. The best views in England were not to be seen. The hotel however was great. lovely room, excellent food and pleasant staff. I would recommend it to anyone. We will be going back in the summer and hope for some better weather. Only one fault I could find was the dining room decor and furnishings, great for breakfast but not formal enough for dinner and it would be nice to have table cloths.

Oh dear, the view is beyond my control and about the only thing I can't be blamed for! You'll have to return. I can be blamed for no table cloths. We did this several years ago now as the trend is towards less formal eating. It suits some and not others. A vexed issue. Very glad that other aspects gave you a good stay. Many thanks for the feedback. We'll be waiting for your return with sunshine pre-ordered!
